Thanks for posting those pictures, Lance!
I'm on a really slow connection so i've only opened a couple. I'll check them out tonight when there's a little more bandwidth.

Petty - I dont think there are any HMS ones out there. Something like this event does make you wonder what it was like 200 years back where it was just masts like that everywhere.... and no skyscrapers!
Since you know the name I was referring too Petty, were you also keen eyed enough to pick out the name of the second from last white boat in the pictures? Not sure the resolution of the uploaded picture will help with that.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
I picked out 2 Middle Earth names. The sight of those ships is beautiful, & hypnotic to. It would look an amazing sight for us if we could jump back in time but I guess it was so common place in the 'old days' no one would blink an eye. Some of those ships are elegant.

New York has a tall ship museum of sorts in its South Street Seaport. I've never toured the ships though.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
I'm just back from walking.
It's a starry moonless night and a hundred invisible coyotes are singing intricate songs in the darkness,
their voices rising and falling, yodeling and trilling in strange and surprising harmonies.
Then suddenly, with a few last yips, the concert is over and I walk home in silence with the milky way overhead.
It's a timeless magic.

HIM I'm hoping not to meet.....
I finally got enough bandwidth to open the boat pictures. Very nice! I wish I knew the names and stories of some of them. Europe has so many cool ships!
Halfy, I believe the big square rigger in yours is the "Peking". She's famous throughout the the tall ship community because of a video called "Around Cape Horn" shot in the 1920's with a little hand-crank home movie camera by Irving Johnson, who was later to become the grandfather of the American Sail Training Association (now Tall Ships America). It's probably online somewhere. It's worth a look!

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Went to a Jack White concert with the family (all big White Stripes fans) last night, but the weather decided (after having been summery for several days) to dive down to about 50 degrees as it got dark. And it was an outdoor concert. Fortunately I was able to borrow my brother's "punk jacket" since he seems to be immune to cold and thought the temperature was fine.
Re: Tales of Home [5]
Do I detect a hint of crabbit in your expression there Eldo?

That hint became considerably stronger as the night went on and the temperature went even lower.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
I am actually excited about the beginning of autumn, but unfortunately we're going through that schizo Maryland weather phase where it flips back and forth between being hot and cold, with no warmth in between, often within the same day. But the hot periods are no longer stickily so, and the cold days are getting downright nippy, which is a sign of good things to come. I just look forward to not having to keep a change of clothes in the car in case the temperature rises or falls by 20 degrees.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Dont hear so much of the White Stripes here anymore. I remember the rumours of whether they were married to each other, brother & sister incest, or whatever. still like "Seven Nation Army" Its getting Autumnal here with the leaves turning reds & golds but, its still so hot ? unusual for us here in the south East of Merry Olde England

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Yeah, the whole issue of their relationship used to weird me out. To the best of my knowledge, though, the truth is that they are not related, they were married when the band started, but divorced only a couple of years later (but continued recording and touring together). I read that they posed as brother and sister because they thought it would be less of a distraction from their music for audiences.
Unfortunately, Jack and Meg haven't worked together for a number of years now, but Jack put together a pretty good backing band for this tour. Some of the songs sounded really different with all the extra instruments, though. They played "Seven Nation Army", of course, near the end, and it was great.
