Tales of Home [4]
The hell's THAT coming from? probably part of the same wave that's causing massive snowstorms in chicago - if one part is big another part will likely be so. Wonder what started it?Pettytyrant101 wrote:'The Met Office has upgraded its warnings for high winds which have been forecast to hit much of Scotland on Thursday morning.
The agency had issued a yellow "be aware" warning, but this has been upgraded to amber "be prepared".
It predicted widespread gusts of 60 to 70mph, although these could be as high as 90mph in exposed parts of the north and west.'- BBC
Hmmm, better hammer down the barrel lid!

Re: Tales of Home [4]
Seems the weather here has decided to be a lot more concilatory than predicted again, but we'll get some snow. No storm though.
Hope you hammered down your barrel lid in time, Petty.
Though I see how the light could be a problem.

Wow. Would love some pics of that.Norc wrote: serioulsy snowing down here.. today all the houses walls and windows were covered in snow. imagen a snow hill with little windows O_O outside my house there were absoluetly no sign of any footprints from the day before, even an hour after my mom had got home, all the footprints were gone.. it's a bit hard to explain, i wish i had the time (and light) to take a pictures, but it looks like all the houses have been abandonded for weeks in the morning and the store was completely covered in snow that had blown on the walls.
Though I see how the light could be a problem.

Wind his picking up down my end of the country now. According to weather report it is about 25mph which normally means gusts around 30-40mph. Not too bad though... just noisy.
Working at home today but I don't think there is enough wind to make my office block sway noticeably. Sure the windows will be creaking though!!

@Norc and Blue, do you have to have the heating on all the time? isnt it expensive for fuel bills or do Fyordlandians have special Winter fuel bills?
@Petty, is it true that Highlanders grow Rowan trees in their front gardens to ward off fairies?
@Lance butterflies and fairy wings.

Trying to work out if it is going to be dodgy here or not. I am on the East coast and the East coast is supposed to get the worst storm surge in over 60 years.... but what does that mean????

Re: Tales of Home [4]
Im in the South East & the wind has kicked up here. I heard on the news about a red warning for SW Scotland & how the East coast is expecting a nasty bout of flooding ! There goes my wheelie bin, hurtling across the road, straight into my neighbours patio.

More or less, but Rowan has several uses when dealing with faerie folk.

I just rescued mine and my neighbours, for about the fifth time, otherwise they'd have Edinburgh tramps sleeping in them by now.

Re: Tales of Home [4]
I counted lots of fallen wheelie bins earlier. Were like the remnants of the Uruk-hai that fought Boromir. Lots had fallen, the rest were just standing there waiting for their turn.
Re: Tales of Home [4]
Apparently closing the Thames Barrier tonight. London will be safe... Essex will be the sacrificial lamb!!
Wonder if this is like the 'big hurricane' last month or if I am gonna wake up floating tomorrow morning.
You alright up there Petty... sounds like you get all the wind, we are getting all the water.

Thank you, Eldo.Eldorion wrote:Congratulations.
We didn't get much, only an insignificant amount, but at least we got some.
I tried taking a picture, but it didn't turn out all that well with the wind and snow and everything.
At least it shows the kind of weather we were having.
The biggest consequens was that the roads pretty much turned into ice rinks. A bit slippery, but at least you can slide all the way home.
Hope everyone who has had some actually bad weather are okay.

Oh, has the UK reverted to 'English units'? Thought you folks had switched over to metric. I only talk to science types, so can't tell from that.Lancebloke wrote:Wind his picking up down my end of the country now. Thought you folks had switched over to metric- Halfy
Officially yes, in practise less so. I still get a pint of mile even though it says its 568ml or some rot on the side- I still weigh myself in stones and pounds and I still measure things in feet and inches.
"You alright up there Petty... sounds like you get all the wind, we are getting all the water."- Lance
Yeah we got off pretty light Lance, we got high winds-top gusts was about 110mph, but no major flooding sadly there has been at least one death nationally.
We dont get affected by sea surges fortunately, as unlike England we have the good sense to have a proper country thats above sea level and not sinking!

UK and Canada still have one foot in the Imperial camp with us Americans. Although even here in the bastion of freedom and irrational systems of measurement, it's not like the metric system is nowhere to be found.halfwise wrote:Oh, has the UK reverted to 'English units'? Americans measure things in football fields and olympic swimming pools. Just watch Discovery.

Re: Tales of Home [4]
So less than a week ago it was 25 F (about -4 C) at 6:30 am and I had to scrape ice off my windshield before driving to work. Today it is 55 F (nearly 13 C) and pouring rain. Relatively warm rain. I want my White Christmas, dammit!
Re: Tales of Home [4]
it was minus 10C that would be 14 F i have some pictures as well... on my phone two secs.
