Re: Tales of Home [4]
Well, good for you guys.
(Except if you're driving to work in it with no snow tires, that is. Drive carefully, Eldo. )
I found this picture which I think exemplifies quite well how fjordlandia looks in winter.
(That's south west Norway and Stavanger without the snow too the left of the piicture.)

Probably the site, Azriel. Doesn't work for me either.

There's a strange comfort in knowing someone else is in the same poop as you are

Eldorion wrote:I had to drive home from work in the snow and ice in the little two-wheel-drive sedan I usually drive. I'm supposed to go into work really early again tomorrow, though depending on the whether they might let me stay home. If I do go in I'll probably see if I can borrow the 4WD. Though hopefully the plows will have come through by then.
but if u have a 4WD u can't powerslide/drift on the ice we're doing fine with our two-wheel-drive, with ABS brakes and what not..
Re: Tales of Home [4]
Still, without snowtires I'm guessing even a little snow feels like a fuill ice rink type northern Fjordlandian road.

Re: Tales of Home [4]
Hello friends. I've been without a computer for two weeks and am finally catching up with all of the posts. Love the pics Blue, especially the skaters. And those trees are great Norc. Wonderful stories that people have shared, the generations before us certainly have put down formidable stones for us to build on.
So, not that it's a big deal, but the last time I was here, Norc encouraged me to enjoy the winter. I've decided to go with snowshoes, which I am hoping will be beneficial with the land invasion of Fjordlandia I've been planning.

If only there was a button to transform the bottoms from a web to a slick surface, you'd have the perfect winter kit. Hike up one side of a hill and skate down the other.

Re: Tales of Home [4]
wow, snowshoes i'd personally go with some more speedy things, but those are great we call them "truger"
Re: Tales of Home [4]
Looks fun, Hillbilly. Don't think I've tried it myself. Been walking through snow where you fall through to your waiste at times though, that's not as much fun.
You should give skiing a go as well if you get the chance.
And I'm glad you liked the pictures.

Very nice Hillbilly! I have a pair of those hanging on my wall, but I won't be using them this year. It's 54F and sunny, and the fruitbuds are already starting to swell. TOO EARLY!!! I NEED MORE WINTER!!!!

Re: Tales of Home [4]
Too early indeed. (We only had winter weather three weeks ago.)
Any danger for the harvest if it should suddenly turn cold again, David?
That's what they always talk about here when we have a bad winter.

This is kind of how it looks here at the moment.
Edit: (That's the start of a cross country skiing track, by the way.)

Yep. The buds are very cold-hardy when the sap is down, but once they start coming out of dormancy and the buds start to open, a hard freeze of only 15 minutes can kill a whole year's crop. We have sprinklers all through the bogs that can be used to protect the plants against light freezes, but that isn't supposed to start until late March.

Well, best of luck David.
You farm in the Pacific North West don't you? Isn't Pinot Noir all the rage around those parts?

Its been 15 degrees here warm and wet Scirocco wind from Africa, all the plants have got new buds, but next week its going to freeze with the Tramontana wind from the North, so its bonkers weather.
