Those are some really shocking temperatures in the US right now- stay warm Yer Maj! (and do remember buckie only makes you think your warm- your not really!)

Take care US hobbits- and on a crabbit note according to the forecasters here your cold snap is fuelling the systems causing our high winds and flooding- so typically its all a bloody yanks fault!!  Mad

It's quite weird that you US hobbits get this sort of weather while there's barely any snow in central and south fjordlandia. Something's not quite right Suspect

Most of the snow here melted a few days ago, but then the cold came back with a vengeance.  When I went outside this morning, before the sun rose, it was 0 F (-18 C) before windchill.

Even though the sun is out right now, there's an advisory warning people to stay indoors since the wind chill is between -5 and -15 F today.  Right now it's 8 F (-13 C) in real degrees and -9 F (-23 C) windchill.

I was thinking about going skiing tomorrow but I think it might be too cold. I did go skiing in temperatures like this once up in New York, but I'm not really in a hurry to do so again.

Not to be "that fjordian", but where I grew up I used to wait for the school bus in -30 to -37 - before windchill Wink It's easy to understand why it causes so much trouble, though. There are cities in Norway too where it barely snows at all, and when they do get 5cm of snow once in a decade everything comes to a full stop because they don't have the equipment to clear it away. I imagine that's what's happening now, people don't have warm enough clothes for this kind of weather.

Layering- thats the key Eldo.

Colds not a problem- you just put more clothes on in layers- its heat I cant stand, you can only strip to naked and if its still too hot after that your just screwed  Mad (and people look at you weird when you go to the shops) I'll take cold over hot any time.

I had plenty of layers on top but I only had one pair of pants on, and they were dress pants so relatively thin. That was definitely a mistake. pale

Yeah I realized that went I stepped outside but it was too late by then since I wanted to get to work on time. I was concerned that thermals would end up being too hot after being inside carrying stuff around for hours, but I should have sucked it up (and will tomorrow assuming it's still this cold).

Like I said, this is really unusual for Maryland.

It might also not be advisable to do what people from Oslo do, which is walk around in jeans all winter whatever the temperature.   Laughing

And I know exactly what you mean about those winters in Trøndelag Ringo. Brrrr.

I'd rather freeze to death and die from heat - feeling to hot is the worst feeling, when it's cold you can just put something on. Agree with Petty Nod

Heat also makes you feel like your life is in danger... I think probably when it is 40c plus. Then you have to cover up and that is the last thing you really want to do!!

Cold... yeah, would rather be cold and layer up.

When it comes to having to choose which to die from... I might actually say cold as I imagine things would go numb and simply turn off. I couldnt imagine what dying of heat feels like all dried up etc.

Fake edit - if I had to choose what to be exposed to and then recover, it would be the other way round. Jumping in a cool swimming pool when hot is bliss. Warming numb limbs is ridiculously painful!

Good point, it is pretty uncomfortable and thats just warming up from general cold- not recovering from hypothermia or the sort of frost bite where fingers and toes snap off. Dont fancy that much  No

And you wear a KILT petty ? Apart from toes what else is prone ?
I cant abide being to cold, cold, wet & windy is my idea of HELL. Coming home, stripping off & having a warm shower, getting in jim-jams, cuddling inside a blanket in front of the TV is better !  Laughing

Supisingly warm and versatile a full kilt with full plaid.
The socks go the knee and are very thick wool and the kilt comes down to the knee (you can always lower it in bad weather to the ankles), and if there a draught you can use the shoulder plaid to tuck round between the legs (ok it looks like a giant tartan nappy if you do that but if your concerned about how you look it aint cold enough!). The plaid a proper kilt is made from is pretty sizeable.

"Coming home, stripping off & having a warm shower, getting in jim-jams, cuddling inside a blanket in front of the TV is better !"- Azriel

Yes but only if you were cold and wet first to appreciate it.  Nod
