I'm tempted to write a serious response detailing how there was no Christians vs. Atheists theme in Tolkien, how the good characters cannot reasonably be described as Christian since they (in the context of the story) predate the Incarnation), and how the bad characters were all deluded or consciously Satanic. In fact, that's what I've just done. Razz

What I'm not going to do, however, is bother elaborating on that, because that would be giving this "boycott" more of my time than it deserves. I use the quotations deliberately because this alleged group doesn't appear to be more than a single guy with a blog and a Twitter page, and his tone borders on the parodic (Poe's Law, here we come!).

Was tempted to tear it to bits myself too Eldo- but I thought in the end it speaks for itself really.

Indeed. I'd rather not have an actual link to the guy's blog, but if you Google the group's name you'll find it easily enough. Read his views on atheism and the "Gaystapo" if you want a laugh. Or a crabbit attack. Laughing

Listen these nutters crave attention, the best way to piss them off is to ignore them, they HATE to be ignored. If you engage you pander to their sense of importance, so ignore it and it will eventually crawl under a rock where it came from.

Christopher Lee talks about the Hobbit (right after the 6 min mark). Sounds like I'll have my wishes granted and get to see more of Nice Saruman Very Happy

No nice way of putting it but they are going to have to have done a good make up job on him to make his Saruman look even the same age as he did in LotR's let alone younger (although 50 years is probably not a huge difference for a wizard- though Gandalf ages noticably in 17)

I really do hope that Christopher Lee lives to see both movies. He is just a great man and a big fan of Tolkien.

He mentioned that the actor playing Bilbo in "the Hobbit" had to be younger than in "the Lord of the Rings", but remember, after Bilbo found the ring he stopped "aging" (<- probably spelled wrong LOL). So the actor Bilbo in LOTR should really look a bit younger. Just saying x) (though this bothers me very little. He first of all he didn't look like a 111 year old man and secondly the actor did a great job) I just though the purist ought to know Wink give them a new bone to gnaw ;D

You spelled aging correctly, Norc. Very Happy

I think you're right that Bilbo should have looked younger in LOTR (I hope I'm understanding your meaning here!). However, those films showed Bilbo having aged between the prologue and the main action, so it seems they may have changed that part of the story. It nags at my purist leanings a bit, especially since they kept the line "you haven't aged a day", but in the end I feel it's a pretty minor point. Smile

I've got to say I'm looking forward to seeing the White Council, even though it's an extrapolation of the story, just to see Christopher Lee on screen again. He's a master of his craft and he's drawn me in to all his characters, however cheesy the writing, since I was a kid. Saruman the White seems appropriate for what may be his last major roll.

With wizards I think it's not so much the age, it's the mileage.

yeah, it doesn't really bother me at all. He did such a great job, that I don't care Smile maybe they could have put a brown wig on him and it would have made a big difference, but who cares!

Telegraph (aus) article with Peter Jackson mainly Tintin, but a small section on The hobbit, with a release date of boxing day? seems a little odd to me!
