update on the bree situation, by all accounts a plug in is broken, sounds a bit painful but we are quite
odd in Bree.
I hope it's not that Dark Lord from Dark Planet up to his old tricks, Mrs Figg.

Re: News from the set
Well, a 'teaser' trailer is usually a bit shorter and doesn't give as much information about the plot as a full theatrical trailer, but it's still a real trailer. This being the first, it definitely won't have as much information in it as later ones. In any event, however, I'm definitely looking forward to this. Maybe it'll make me crabbit, but for now, I can't wait!
Re: News from the set
Hi Sinister, welcome to Forumshire! I'm very sorry to hear that your forum is having technical difficulties; I've had to deal with that both here (on the old version of the site) and on other forums in the past and it's definitely a pain, although we've been lucky in that regard recently. I do hope that you stick around since it's great to meet new people here, but I also hope that your home is accessible again soon.

The plug-in would be the Facebook software that allows people to login (except for those with accounts separate from Facebook, although I was never able to figure out how to set one of those up). If that's the problem, then it may be a technical problem at Facebook's end, and therefore out of Dark Lord Taz's hands. I'm not sure if that means it will be fixed quicker or slower, but I could be mistaken anyway.

I prefer to think of myself as more of a Cincinnatus type, roused from my quiet rural existence to defend the forum from threats through the use of absolute, dictatorial power! Of course, Cincinnatus gave up his power, but that's neither here nor there.

Re: News from the set
All the AICN set reports have been great and I particularly liked the spotlight on location scouting this time. I have only a vague sense of the logistical difficulties involved with shooting on location but I think that the artistic results from it are quite magnificent. LOTR wouldn't have looked half as good as it did had it been filmed in a studio in front of green-screens half the time, like many other blockbusters. I hope The Hobbit will look as good, and unnatural color editing aside, the trailer suggests it will.

Hey! the guy from "Ain't It Cool News" was in it! I find it interesting that the video basically was about the same thing as his blog

Re: News from the set
That was really cool! I like all of the production videos but seeing them on location, especially in Hobbiton, made this one of my favorites so far. A few observations:
- Yes, Petty, it does appear confirmed now that the barrels scene will involve rapids, or at least rock-related drama.
- More fat humor, as Bombur appears to be using his fat as a thrusting weapon.
- They mention that there are two units (PJ's and Andy Serkis') but I wonder if there are more. LOTR had up to six units (or thereabouts) at time, but part of that was because they fell behind schedule.
- It's great that they're rebuilding Hobbiton out of permanent materials. I was thrilled to hear that they'd keep the Hobbit Holes furnished when after production for the tours, but this is even better!
- Relatedly, I think Hobbiton looks just as good as it did in LOTR. Still different from the book (especially since apparently all movie!Hobbits live in holes, while only a minority of Tolkien's did so), but I'm willing to overlook that. For now, at least.

well at least all the hobbits in hobbiton lived in holes. I believe the ones in Buckland and bree lived in houses
YES! Bilbo with a light saber!!!! (probably to get the light in his face right )
Re: News from the set
I'm pretty sure that Tolkien noted in the Prologue to LOTR that it was generally only the richest and the poorest of Hobbits who lived in holes. The richest lived in great smials, as they were known, that were like mansions. The poorest lived in any dirt hole they could find or dig themselves. The majority of hobbits had long since switched to more or less ordinary houses, probably influenced by dwarvish architecture due to contacts on the East-West trade route that ran through the Shire. One could still find smials throughout the Shire too, even Brandy Hall in Buckland.
However, this statement is contained in the Prologue to LOTR, which is a fairly dense and not strictly speaking necessary-to-read part of the book. It's also somewhat overshadowed by the fact that Bag End is right above Bagshot Row, which appears to be an exception since its inhabitants appear to be middle or working class hobbits. However, there are numerous buildings noted throughout the Shire, even in Hobbiton and Bywater. They're just generally overlooked in the collective imagination and in Tolkien artwork. This is understandable since Bag End is so iconic and hobbit holes are described so lovingly in the first chapter of The Hobbit, which is far more widely-read than the Prologue to LOTR.

Re: News from the set
I just looked at the One Rings frame by frame analysis of the trailer, geeked out, and then noticed two interesting things they said, one bad one good, first the bad, Bilbo goes running off with a backpack, not just without his pocket handkerchief, the good thing is in Rivendell are those Elves the sons of Elrond?

maybe so, but I am more worried by the fact that it looks like they are surrounded and like.. not being too welcomed by the elves. As I remember in the book, the elves just teased them, but not sprang towards them n horses.. well... just have to wait and see. Maybe they were friendly teasing them on horses and the dwarves didn't like it.
Re: News from the set
Couldn't be Mirkwood could it? Who 'd know with PJ?
