I think the filmmakers wanted what women might consider a 'hot' dwarf, hired one, but then wanted to show more of his face, considering the objective. The filmmakers also desired distinction among the thirteen -- but they have essentially tossed Tolkien out the door here, and since sillification is subjective, this opens up a rather wide door in the name of distinction!

I note that someone in one of the video blogs jokingly explains that he hasn't a beard because he's young. But that won't do in any event, not in Tolkien's world where Dwarves are born with beards -- the Filmmakers can perhaps claim that no such information appears in The Hobbit itself, but I think the main reason is, in any case, the 'film concern' of eye candy, mixed with a dash of an arguably needless measure of distinction.

Now now, May I remind you that this a film and therefore the only consideration is getting eye candy on the screen. Therefore who cares if we need to nick names from all over the world and completly rewrite the characters and their history. As long as we can find a reason to get the pretty actors on the screen for as long as possible, with the security of a book link to get bums on seats we've got it made! Right?

Seems Bilbo definetly has a contract with the dwarves he runs out of his hobbit hole with it in his hand. And seems that the return to Bag End and the sale have made it in.
