Re: Tales of Home [2]
Something with a bar in the back would be good Lance.
So anothe rnice day another trip out.
Todays destination )well turning back point really) was Blairmore.
See that hill across the loch in this picture, and the sort of castle like building on it? Well thats where I was making for, round the loch, over the hill past that building down to the other side-
But on the way there first stop was Kilmun church, there has been church there a very long time (to at least the 1500's).
This the old road leading to it-
And this is the Church itself- many notable figures of the Clan Campbell are buried here -sadly at the moment its undergoing a major restoration so much of it was inaccessible-
If the dead do haunt graveyards then at least this lot have a good view.
This is a war memorial -
And part of the cemetery behind the church-
As I mentioned there are some notable local historic figures in here, but one that never seems to get any attention is this one-so I am highlighting it here-
And there are plenty old and interesting stones to study-
It also as some beautiful trees surrounding it-
So onwards up the hill (and along it) to that castle like house form the first pic. Sadly it seems to be being neglected and was in a poorer state of repair than last time I saw it up close-
Not bad views too-
I hope someone who can afford to maintain it take sit on before it gets much worse-
And so over the hill, on a crappy road- and heres a crappy pic to accompany it that I only include because that's not a dog on the road ahead but a deer- this years generations by the looks of it- and very nearly tonights venison burgers as it came out right ion front of us, saved only by the road being so poor we were barely moving at the time, but by the time Id got the camera out the window it was nearly gone-
And a short drive round the coast to Blairmore-
You are looking up Loch Long towards the real start of the Highlands here- over those hills to the right in another loch lies Faslane- home of the UK's Trident missles.
And that was time to head back- so all following pics are taken by hanging out the car as we sped by!-
Blairmore-
A farm for Dave to admire-
The Holy Loch-
This was the pier the US Navy used- when I was growing up this was a hive of activty with launches bringin shifts, supplies back and forth 24 hours a day-
Sandbank War Memorial-
A poor pic but this tree always makes me think of Bilbo;s party tree- when I was in primary school we held our school sports day in that filed-
And so the final stretch to home-

Re: Tales of Home [2]
Great pics, Petty - they do look very "British", if you don't mind me saying so (though I'm guessing you might ). Especially liked the Elizabeth Blackwell picture. Such people often go unnoticed, like you say, but not by you it seems - very cool picture Love the last one too with the little wall along the road.

Re: Tales of Home [2]
I liked the Elizabeth Blackwell picture too! A lot of wisdom in that quote. A gal worth remembering!
I LOVED the castle house though, how old is it? It looks very Art Nouveau and quite surreal with one squarish style here and round organic style there, like they build it sideways and changed their mind half way through. Put a big smile on my face!
Oh, while I have your attention Petty. Why is that famous Grouse famous? What did it do? It's Scottish + alcohol so naturally I thought you could provide answers.

Excellent question, I've been wondering the same for a while

Re: Tales of Home [2]
Ah an easy answer- the man who first created the blend (its a blended whisky) was very good at producing quality, not to expensive whisky, but he was shit at names- and he called his whisky the Grouse Brand Blend.
One particular blend was very moreish indeed and in 1905 his son changed its a name to the Famous Grouse because after you'd had a few it got increasingly difficult to try to order a Grouse Bland Blend, but mainly as it had become famous for being whiskey, good and not to pricey- the Scottish Holy Trinity of alcohol-
Im not actually sure about the age of that house Amarie- given its slight ridiculousness and the obvious careless pouring of money thats went into it my guess is it was those Victorians, but its possibly earlier- I shall try to find out.
Love the fair pics Figg. Ladies in bustles, oh my!

I like women to dress how they please, but some dress in ways that please me also. And I love the hairdo in the last photograph. I wonder, can women be both Feminine and Feminist?
Are you the lass in red in the first photo, Mrs Figg? In my mind's eye it's you!

Re: Tales of Home [2]
I like quirky houses like that "castle-ish" one ! I like to pretend I can imagine whats inside, & in that one I image it being like the house in "Casper" (film) rich, ornate carved wooden spiral stair case, Gryphons & things.
Your snaps Figgy are lovely to ! Puts Morris dancing into a cocked hat ! Their "Do's" always seem more fun, & more people join in, & HAVE fun ! Sometimes I kinda miss that "togetherness".

Re: Tales of Home [2]
i swore at a kid today. basically said "for fuck's sake"...
(i said "faen heller" where faen is short for fanden which means the devil and heller means.. well.. rahter i suppose... so i basically said "rather the devil" or "i rather have the devil here".. or something.. )
i regret nothing.

Re: Tales of Home [2]
Well, you went out of the way to tell us all. So not sure if you are hiding some guilt or if you are as heartless as me and think the kid deserved it.
Re: Tales of Home [2]
the kid totally deserved it. he opened the door too fast (a door he wasn't allowed to use) and it hit my ladder real hard which i was on top of where i was painting that damn school and it nearly knocked me over. i could've smashed my head in the asfalt and gotten a bucket of paint over me. sure as hell deserved it.
Re: Tales of Home [2]
Its raining! I was so happy I had to go outside and stand in it. Ive missed you rain!

Re: Tales of Home [2]
We havnt had a good old thunderstorm in years here ! Could do with one now ! In the 60s & 70s they were a given, so violent sometimes we hid in the closet to escape the bright flashes of lightning & the colossal BANGS over head, it used to literally shake the building ! then it drifted away, rumbling quietly just to let you know "Im still here, just resting, be back later" and the rain would crash down, but it was warm & smelt lovely, as tho it had collected all the flower perfumes of the world & dropped them in your lap.

Some north european traits are shared traits Norc.
I am sure others find a love of rain and drizzle and mist quite odd.
