Re: Tales of Home [2]
I had to go to a meeting today, its a fortnightly thing and utteely pointless, more so today as when I arrived it was to find the person I had the meeting with was on holdiay, and had forgot to mention it.
However on the way I took some pics.
There are loads of old stone walls in this town, most of the time they are dull grey stone, but come summer they look like this-
There is an old church very near where my meeting was, its built on the grounds of the original church which served the Castle on the adjacent Castle Hill, when there still was a castle.
It also has some very old graves- Templar? Masonic? Pirates? Or all three? (All three can be found here!)
The Church has a nice window too-
I like the bit of town where my meeting was (well wasnt, but should have been! ) its the oldest part, round about the old Castle site- these are probably the oldest houses in town- their roofs would originally have been thatched.
This is Castle Hill, where the castle once stood, long ago.
This is the view from the Hill, looking at the Gantocks lighthouse (very popular with seals) and across to the old disused power station- they are scheduled to finally knock that chimney down, which will be weird as its been a prominent landmark my whole life.
Just below the summit is the statue of Highland Mary, looking back across the water for her love, Rabbie Burns-
And this one is for Mrs Figg- I pass this house on my way home to my barrel- always wanted to see inside it as its an art deco house- hard to see from the road unfortuntely- this was best I could get of it-

I enjoy looking at the pics you post ! I havnt travelled enough in my life, for one reason or another, & seeing pics cheer me up. Love the stained glass window ! got the light just right for that one ! Its so nice to see other parts of the world AND to learn the history, which I thoroughly enjoy !

Re: Tales of Home [2]
they were fantastic Petty. I love those White stone cottages and the view from the castle hill. what happened to it? was it medieval? that Deco house looks really interesting, flat rooves would be a bugger in your climate, what with the weight of the rain, I bet they have a lead roof.

Re: Tales of Home [2]
I love your pictures and descriptions, Petty. I find it very interesting. It makes me want to take a decent camera and go around Baltimore photographing interesting places I like to visit. I'm not photographer but it's always fun to take pictures and share them.
Re: Tales of Home [2]
Thanks Figgs and Eldo, and at least it meant my walk wasnt a waste of time.
Mrs Figg the castle was raised to the ground (always thought that was an odd expression).
'Very little remains of the castle, which would originally have belonged to the Lamont family but became a royal castle with the Earls of Argyll (Campbells) as hereditary keepers, paying a nominal rent of a single red rose to the sovereign. In earlier times, Mary Queen of Scots stayed at the castle circa 1563 and granted several charters during her visit. The castle was destroyed during the rebellion in 1685.'
What that leaves out is the slaughter of the Lamonts by the Campbells.
At about the same time the Campbells also took Toward castle, about 9 miles down the coast and also a Lamont castle-
'The Campbells took this opportunity to surround the Lamont castle of Toward. Unable to withstand a long seige and with no hope of reprieve, the Lamonts surrendered the castle, having apparently reached honourable terms. The Campbells later ignored the terms of capitulation accusing the lamonts of being traitors, unworthy of terms.
The Lamonts where bound and kept within the castle, during this time several women were murdered. The survivors were taken by boats to Dunoon and in the church were sentenced to death. A large number of Lamont men, women and children, were shot or stabbed to death and they did ‘cause hang upon ane tree near the number of thirty six persons most of them being special gentlemen of the name of Lamont and vassals to Sir James’. the half-hanged men, both dead and dying were buried in pits. Sir James and his brothers were kept prisoner for five years and it would be 16 years before the ringleaders of the massacre were brought to justice and Sir Colin Campbell beheaded.'
And so ended Lamont control here and the rise of the Campbells of Argyll continued, today the Head of Clan Campbell sits in Inverary Castle in the heart of Argyll and goes by the title of Duke.

Is it? Or is that a US spelling?
so Cambells were always a bit crabbit then. - Mrs Figg
There may be, a small, bit of a history of it, yes. And some perhaps less than honourable moments. Ever hear about the Massacre at Glencoe?
In the name of fairness there was an outstanding reason for the Campbells actions, it was in their best interests to do it. And now the Clan owns most of the land in Argyll and the Chief lives in a castle and sits in the Lords as a Duke of the Realm. History rewards a bastard, especially a clever bastard.
