Is an outdoor instrument, nothing better if played outdoors.
For indoors some medieval genius invented the Krumhorn. Sounds like a kazoo. Died out for some reason.
(I used to play with this group, btw)
but for truly beautiful indoor pipe listening try the Irish uillean pipes, sometimes called the sweetpipes. I could listen to a good uillean piper all day.
Edit: this goes more to the heart of it:

Wiser words were never before spoken by a ball of fur.
If you have only ever heard pipes played indoors then you've never really heard them.
Ideally they should be played in a glen where the sound of the drones will come back off the hillsides and a really skillful piper will then incorporate that back into their playing.

You've heard (and I've played) reconstructions. Don't think anyone bothered to reconstruct the things until the 20th century. Probably knew better.

Re: Tales of Home [2]
no, i've heard it i live in a weird country and weird movies are made, and i've heard it there it's an awesome instrument though, i'de like to learn who to play it
Re: Tales of Home [2]
If you ever manage to get your hands on one, use strong constant air pressure, and simplified recorder fingering (forked fingerings in the lower hand will have the lower finger deleted). It only has a range of an octave and a 3rd.

Re: Tales of Home [2]
i tried the recorder and i'm kinda good at it (i find it hard finding all the holes and covering them) but if it's simplified then hell yeah, i'll try ^^
Re: Tales of Home [2]
i am a pro at seljeføyte. it only has one hole and you play like over-tones sort of.
omg i fell in love with this instrument. it's awesome.

Re: Tales of Home [2]
If I could ever make a flute work I'd want a seljifloyte. But could never get a consistent sound out of any transverse flute. I want to hear that one with the harp.
hurdy-gurdy's are a staple of medieval music. Fun things. Never underestimate the etherial power of a drone, something largely lost in modern music.

Re: Tales of Home [2]
the hurdy gurdy is like a violinist who got tired of using the bow or sonething and the name!
Re: Tales of Home [2]

Can you even call that a violin?

Re: Tales of Home [2]
Because you all weren't sick of me talking about my graduation before, I wanted to share the official graduation photo now that we have it since it's much nicer than the ones we took. The school had set up a photo station on the way to the stage and everyone was going through it really fast, which is my excuse for the dumb/nervous smile (it's also why the tassel is swinging). But all in all I thought it was a decent picture.
NB This version of the photo is significantly scaled down. The full version is 2417 x 3600 pixels and you can see the pores on my skin.

Re: Tales of Home [2]
When I left school we went to the park and played football (proper football... not that silly american version). That looks like far too much dressing up there!!!
Re: Tales of Home [2]
nice photo i like that the tassel is swinging gives the photo a bit of an edge to it ^^
i feel when i graduate i should post my picture too.. our uniform is less formal (to put it mildly)
whenever we take school photograph they put on like a blurry filter and the skin looks better.. dunno if i like it though.

Re: Tales of Home [2]
Nice pic Eldo- and congrats again on your graduation. (Even if they do make you dress up like a HP extra to get it)

Re: Tales of Home [2]
Thanks, everyone! It means a lot to me.
I actually dressed down significantly by not wearing business attire underneath the gown. I had shorts, a plain white t-shirt, and sandals on.
