Thanks so much, everyone! cheers I was feeling a little sad last night knowing that it's all over and I won't get to go back every single week (even though I didn't always want to), but I talked to some people about it and I'm feeling pretty good about everything right now. Very Happy

Nah, I was actually in a minority in terms of clothes. Most people there had button shirts, ties, dress pants, dress shoes, the whole shebang. It's been so hot lately and on top of it I'm sick, so I decided to go casual instead. Nod Fortunately I wasn't the only one, but I did get a few odd looks.

Norc wrote:I like how you could've worn more bling, but didn't, that makes no sense, but ok..

Well it all went around my neck, and I didn't want anyone to think I was being arrogant (an effort in vain, I'm sure Razz). Also, you have to buy some of the bling and a some of it just wasn't worth it IMO.

School colors are black and yellow, taken from the Maryland flag (I graduated from one of the University of Maryland campuses). Very Happy

yes it is sad leaving, I remember I went through a little mourning period after I graduated. I missed everyone terribly. But its exciting thinking of new horizons, I have spent much of my adult life in education because I enjoy it, maybe you can return to more study after a bit, it never hurts having more qualifications.

erm.. still don't see why.. Shrugging (you know, bunad and sami-wear was original a way of showing wealth. People put on the finest cloth (the sami were just great at this) and all their silver to show their wealth, espcially the women, because their silver was their economic security)
i mean... look. BLING!

I think it was just to weigh them down- what with most Fjordian women being kidnapped by Vikings (or McOrwell).
So they cover them in jewelry then they cant run away. Tales of Home [2] - Page 8 1918643206

hey Petty, did you know the modern kilt is actually French and the different patter/different family thing is rather modern, and the old kilt (the one you see in braveheart etc. etc., like before the french) it actually comes from Vikings.- Norc

Not entrely accurate.
The modern kilt you see worn now is Victorian in design, as are many, but not all tartans.
Tartan was banned by the English on pain of death and it took a few generations before the law was changed allowing it again- by which time the original weavers, and a lot of their skills, were lost.
So they went round trying to find old weavers or their descendants to piece together the tartans- those they could not find the orginal patterns for they invented (more than half of them).

As to viking origins, there is a similarity but the old Scots kilt- which is just a huge rectangle of woven cloth and is worn wrapped round and over one shoulder is a Scottish development, designed so you can carry stuff (like your buckie) up to the size of a lamb in the folds of the cloth- so it acted as a bag, rucksack, cloak, body cover and sleeping bag all in one. And it was waterproof.
The French influence in kilt design doesn't begin until the time of the Auld Alliance with France, long after the original full body kilt was in use in Scotland.

Just means buckie stash in Scots. Tales of Home [2] - Page 8 3392635135

Bag and knife too is from Norse too. - Amarie

see! You need a knife to threaten and capture the womenfolk, and a bag to stuff them into- typical!
