{{ It's back! (whatever it is) - took a few snaps earlier, nothing there. Took a few just now and its there again, about same time as last night. And, I got better pictures this time! If I make it to morning I'll bung them up when I get home. }}

{{ Got the right lens at least so you can get a better idea of how far away from the shadow I am.

First heres my shadow to show you where it is being cast and what it loos like from where I was standing to take the pictures. You can see the traffic cones in the top right corner to give you perspective on distances.

Zoomed in (hard to do as I couldn't really see it in the dark, especially not through the camera which was just pitch black)

Tales of Home [9] - Page 26 DSC-0371

So there you have it, shadowy figure? Optical illusion? You're guess is as good as mine. }}

You should have used the tripod and remote trigger. Zero blur and would let you stand in frame so you can see shadow coming from you Wink

Not sure I want to be in frame with it!  Whatever is causing it's definitely not my shadow anyway, apart from being too far away I was waving my arms about, sticking one leg out all sorts taking these (must have looked even more like a lunatic than normal) to see if the pose changes in the shadow, but no its same. }}

True terror is the wight that lets you know it's watching, biding its time, for when you are helpless and can't run as it slowly closes in. Watch for potholes, don't want to twist your ankle on a dark night. pale

Its waiting. It has time. It doesn't want to go yet.
Id look into trying to find the local history of the place ? This is someone who does not want to let go....yet.

You make midges look good, Petty. (don't take it personally).

Looks like you had about a minute to capture those colors in the dawn. Rarely see green in the sky.

It's funny, even though Tolkien himself painted The Hill as a nearly perfect hemisphere, it's never been an image I can accept. The films were a bit closer to my image but still not right as they were working with a ridge - but at least it looked natural.

{{ Well it has ben Hobbited over the centuries. I doubt it started off so regular, but then hobbits came along and started digging into it, and creating gardens and orchards and stuff. PLus in Tolkiens own illustration its not smoothed sided its stepped, caused by the building of the roads and holes into the side of it. }}

{{ Though what The Hill looks most like if your looking for an English equivalent is something not  natural at all, the round barrows for the dead such as Solsbury Hill (the name being a bit of a clue to both the sun worship aspect and the fact its got buried people in it)

Tales of Home [9] - Page 26 5078048597-e092370997-b

There is also Glastonbury Tor, which though it has been worked at varies times in history is as far as I am aware a natural hill.

Tales of Home [9] - Page 26 Glastonbury-Tor-View-of-an-iconic-landmark-geograph-5500644

You can see it already has houses along the lower slopes, not hard to imagine it with hobbit holes higher up though. }}
