Skeletons? My interest is piqued!
I have to wait until Tuesday or so to see the last episode.

Since I spoiled Tyrion's fate for myself I wasn't shocked when he killed Tywin, but I was surprised when he killed Shea (but she really had it coming). It was nice to see Varys sitting next to Tyrion's box on the boat. Put a little smile on my face.
- Spoiler:
- I like Varys, especially show!Varys, so I hope that he and Tyrion have entertaining scenes together next season. His whole "nope.gif" reaction to hearing the bells was great.
Edit: Ray Harryhausen would have definitely approved of those skeletons.
I was thinking the same thing. The jerky way they were animated looked like a deliberate shout-out to Jason and the Argonauts.

- I thought it was funny that Varys had the sorcerer shipped to him so he could exact his revenge, and now he was shipping Tyrion to freedom.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
The cavalry charge was one of those moments where I think being a book reader ruined the scene for me, at least on the first watch. I recognize that stuff like removing the awesome battle cry is something I should just get over, but the whole scene felt very small. There was never any sense (in this or the previous episode) that there were ever 100,000 willing at the Wall. And I don't think the show writers' dialogue is as good as Martin's. But I suspect I'd enjoy the scene considerably more on a second viewing, knowing what was coming.

- Spoiler:
- I've not seen the episode (or any other episodes), but I read that Lady Stoneheart doesn't appear, and that book fans are "furious". I actually think that was a good choice - I think Lady Stoneheart was a mistake, he should never have resurrected her. She never really added anything to the story except a "wtf", and she doesn't play any significant role after her introduction (though that may yet change, of course). See, Eldo - I don't always complain about changes

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
Agree Eldo. The size of the cavalry was quite obvious as you saw it all but they converged on a very small spot in the woods. The pincer move was quite cool but, like you say, there was no way of telling that the wildings had a huge number of people there.
Also not sure what is going to keep Tyrion going.... he now still has ties back home which had been severed in the book with him and Jaime falling out.
Ringo - think might cover your comment in the book thread as that is still a little way off if it ever happens.

I wonder if HBO has the budget to do an army of 100.000? Its not cinema and I dont know if it can be done on tv, they seem to have used the cash on the dragon cgi.

I think they do... when you see the episode tomorrow, you will see what we mean. I don't think it would have been much more work to make it seem a little bit bigger.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
Random question: in interviews Martin often says Dothraki with i as in English eye.
In the show it's i as in machine however.
So my question is... what's up with that? Does Martin ever comment on it?

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
Got around to seeing the finale, and I'm a bit in two minds about it. Parts I really liked and parts I struggled a bit with.
Seen simply as an episode of the TV show I would agree it was a good episode though. Though not quite living up to the hype of best finale in hte shows history from the showrunners.
Also felt a bit strange to end on Arya, as both Bran and Tyrion would have felt more natural to me.
And don't get me started on skeletons and fire granades.
So a bit in two minds, but generally liked the episode.

Oh, and as the series is finished I guess it must be okay to post this Pedro Pascal quote. I think it pretty much sums up the character.
Rest of the interviews not too bad either.

Folks don't last long in the GoT world. If you had to write an obituary for Oberyn what would it say?
Lived it. Loved it. Bye.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
“As I read Return of the King, I didn’t want it to be over. That last book blew my mind, particularly the scouring of the Shire. I didn’t like that when I was in high school. The story’s over, and they destroyed the ring — but he didn’t write “and now they lived happily ever after.” Instead, they went home and home was all fucked up. The evil guys had burned down some of the woods; a fascist-like tyranny had taken over. That seemed anticlimactic to me. Frodo didn’t live happily ever after or marry a nice girl hobbit. He was permanently wounded; he was damaged. As a 13 year old, I couldn’t grasp that. Now, every time I re-read The Lord of the Rings — which I do, every few years — I appreciate the brilliance of the scouring of the Shire. That’s part of what lifts the book from all its imitators. There was a real cost to Tolkien’s world. There’s a tremendous sadness at the end of Lord of the Rings, and it has a power. I think that’s partly why people are still reading and re-reading these books. By the time I finished Lord of the Rings it actually somewhat depressed me, because I didn’t think I could ever do anything of that stature. Fortunately, I got over that.”

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
GRRM is such a fanboy. It's actually pretty cool how he's been so involved in sci-fi fandom throughout his (decades-spanning) writing career. Makes the phrase "one of us" not seem like mere pandering.
Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
So, after months of reading, I could finally allow myself to watch the first episode yesterday Watched the second today, and my first impression is that this series is going to be fantastic. It's been a week or so since I finished book 5, and GOT had finally stopped being on my mind all the time. The first episode pulled me right back into it, just as I'd hoped it would. The visuals are great, the script is great and the actors are great. It's all great I know they won't continue sticking this close to the book in the other seasons, but I believe I'll be okay with that. It's pretty obvious that the creators of this show love the books, and that's all a reader can ask; changes there will be, but as long as there won't be any red priests on bunny sleighs, I trust these guys know what they're doing.

Now that there's a year before season 5 I'm thinking about giving the books a shot.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
If you do, start from the beginning of the books, or at least with A Clash of Kings. The changes in the show are snowballing and the seasons no longer correspond to the divisions in the books. I know a couple people who want to begin with book 4 but I cannot advise against that strongly enough. That said, the books are great (at least the first three) and a modem classic of fantasy, so I recommend then highly.
Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
It'd feel weird not starting with the first book. The length of the books seems intimidating to me, but I'll give it a shot anyway.
