Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
I really like it. Some things are confusing (mostly the stuff about Jamie's capture and then his capture when he's with Brienne, and then the stuff with Roose Bolton and the handing over of Harrnehal from the Lannister's (I thought it was given to Littlefinger )), and I'll have to go back and re-watch the whole series at a later date, but I really like how I'm starting to sympathize with characters I hated (Jamie, the Hound).
Oh, and the music is great too.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
If I recall correctly, Harrenhal was occupied by Lannister forces for most of the war, and the passing of its title to Littlefinger was mostly a ceremonial thing (and a signal of his authority over the Trident, replacing the rebellious Tullys). I don't think Littlefinger was in a hurry to actually take up residence in the castle though, both due to its reputation as cursed and because I don't know if he'd have the men on hand.
I agree about the music. I've become a fan of Ramin Djawadi for his work on Iron Man and Pacific Rim, but Game of Thrones has so much more space to spread its metaphorical wings.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
Personally, I can't understand why anyone would want to take up residence in Harrenhal, unless they had the intent of restoring it.

Tonight's episode:
It's made clear in this episode that either the crew or Martin was a fan of LOTR.
I do need to read the books, but for now, after someone sees it who has, will you tell me if it's the same way in the books?

- Kind of Spoilery:
- The battle had several elements of Helms Deep and Minas Tirith in it, whether it was the giants (trolls) Mammoths (Mumaks) or the fact that it was at night and I couldn't see a damn thing. I haven't read the books, so I don't know how true the battle was to them, but it was almost a reenactment IMO.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
I've got to say, I was really impressed with the Battle of the Blackwater. Very exciting and cinematic. Some bits reminded me of Helm's Deep, but Tolkien's shadow (and PJ's adaptations) hangs over so much of the fantasy genre, it's impossible to avoid.
Some things I am finding a bit weird, however. Mostly the magic stuff. Season 1 didn't have a lot of magic, and when the red woman gives birth to that...thing...in season 2 it was a bit of a shock. It's funny, because the things like dragons, giants, and white walkers don't bother me, but that weird smoke demon bothered me.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
I haven't seen the latest episode yet, Tin, but hopefully I can answer that question for you tomorrow. Martin has been very open about the influence Tolkien had on him, though.
There's definitely more and more magic as the story goes on. Part of this is just the nature of the story -- if LOTR was about the end of magic and the supernatural playing an active role in the world, then ASOIAF is about the magic coming back. But I wonder if the show tried to downplay the fantasy elements in favor of the medieval/historical drama connection, since those types of shows have a much better track record than fantasy.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
The shadow thing I didn't like much but only because I think they had played down other magic a lot and that scene felt over the top to me. I think they could have done something else there.

I really don't like the Lord of light theme (I made the name up). It seemed to follow melisandre around a lot but have noticed it when others start chatting R'hollor stuff. It always seems very out of place and distracts me.

I really liked this as the closing credits of the episode where Jaime

All I can say is move over Howard Shore. Or at least that's just my opinion.

That image is strangely unsettling.

I really like the modern covers of songs that they play in GOT. It's a little dose of anachronism that I think is actually really effective and fun. Helps the world feel more grounded and closer to ours, I think, despite the medieval setting and magical stuff.

- Spoiler:
- The battle in the latest episode is an amalgamation of 2 battles in the book. The raiders behind the wall (ygritte etc) attack separately and the battle is quite different. The little scene with Jon and Ygritte isn't in the book however I thought it was a nice touch.
The main battle was also different. We already knew a lot more about the giants and mammoths because Jon spends more time with them in the book. But in the attack there are more being used and a whole section with a battering ram and some chariot type action too.
Lastly, they make a point of how drawn it the fight is in the book and that they had to use scarecrow type things to make it seem like they had more men and take some of the bow shots.
Some, all in all the battle was quite different actually but I did quite enjoy last night's episode. Not often the series allows you to focus on one place.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
Okay so I have some questions about the end of S4-E04.
- Spoiler:
- We see the white walker take the baby north to some sort of frozen fortress and the walker with horns turns the baby into a walker.
http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/White_Walkers%27_master
Now that wiki entry says that this is pretty much a made up incident because they aren't sure what has happened to Craster's sons.In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, there has not yet been any mention of the Others, who appear in person only very occasionally, having a leader or any kind of hierarchy. Similarly, the fate of Craster's sons is still unknown: Old Nan's tales allude to the Others' feeding human children to the wights, as opposed to them turning them into Others, as speculated by some of Craster's wives.
It seems like the tv show is jumping ahead of the books here, unless it's just a portrayal of what could have happened. But seeing how there hasn't been anything like that so far in the series, it seems like the show creators are saying, "This is what happened, and these white walker 'kings' exist."
So is this in line with what Martin has planned? Or are the tv show creators going out on a limb?

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
- Spoiler:
- The producers have admitted that JRRM told them (and only them) how he intends to play out the story, in case the show runs ahead of the books.
http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/03/19/game-of-thrones-george-r-r-martin-ending/
So if this is not what Martin plans to do, it's probably not strikingly inconsistent with his vision.

I love how we've spoilerized this thread, despite the big drag-out discussion to end all discussions we had about it.
