Ringdrotten wrote:So, after months of reading, I could finally allow myself to watch the first episode yesterday Watched the second today, and my first impression is that this series is going to be fantastic. It's been a week or so since I finished book 5, and GOT had finally stopped being on my mind all the time. The first episode pulled me right back into it, just as I'd hoped it would. The visuals are great, the script is great and the actors are great. It's all great I know they won't continue sticking this close to the book in the other seasons, but I believe I'll be okay with that. It's pretty obvious that the creators of this show love the books, and that's all a reader can ask; changes there will be, but as long as there won't be any red priests on bunny sleighs, I trust these guys know what they're doing.
gosh you are in for a treat Ringo!, I quite envy you being able to watch it all from the beginning again. So many wonderful characters, I wonder if you imagine them like the actors from the show? So many awesome moments.

I think Ned was the only character I knew from the show before I started reading the books, but I never pictured him like Sean Bean. It wasn't that hard to figure out what the actress who plays Daenerys looks like either, but the Daenerys I pictured and the actress are quite similiar. I guess the places will be the most different. Anyway, about time for episode 3

Uh.. did I miss something when I read the books? Was Renly afraid of blood and was Loras is boyfriend?

I think the Loras bit wasn't really implied in the books but was a decent enough possibility the script writers couldn't resist.

I think Renly's sexuality was pretty heavily implied in the books, but GRRM officially confirmed it to fans years ago just in case.

Though Renly's sexuality was strongly implied I don't think the relationship with Loras was.
The problem with looking things up in SOIF is that the chapter names aren't descriptive; you're basically thumbing through looking for a scene almost page by page.

BTW Figgy.. It had been noticed who you have declared for. I hope this can be solved without too much bloodshed!
Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
Interesting. I wonder why he didn't explore that relationship the way he did Daenerys' adventures with her handmaids. Perhaps he doesn't feel as comfortable describing swords in sheaths as describing nipples and breasts? Daenerys is a POV character, though, I guess the answer lies there.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
Oh, and I finished season 1 today! After DOS it's such a relief to watch an adaptation of a great book and be able to enjoy it from the first episode to the last. It gives me hope They did a fantastic job with the limited budget they had for the first season, and the acting, writing and sets are great, it all feels very GoT. And I'm very glad I chose to read the books first; the show must be very confusing for someone unfamiliar with the books, with all the names and places and whatnot. Anyway, I couldn't ask more of an adaptation, so my hat's off to all involved. Now, on to the next seasons and changes to the books - will my hat stay off?

She won't ever win... she talks too much. Well missandei seems to talk too much when introducing Dany.
Winter is Coming. That is all that needs to be said.

Protip: the Westeros.org wiki has exhaustive chapter summaries (and cross-edition page numberings!) that make it way easier to look stuff up in the book.

IIRC, Martin has said that he doesn't write gay male sex scenes because that's outside the realm of his experience and he's not sure how to write one.
Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
Also, with all this declaring for Houses, we seriously need some Lannister love in here. I think I know what my next avatar is going to be after the World Cup is over...
