Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Not weird- just pointing out the obvious- its clear as day they distort the facts whenever they have a piece on the BBC- that article was just a perfect example of how they do that.
It should serve as a warning to take anything read in the Mail about the BBC (or immigration, or welfare) with a pinch of salt so large you'd need a fleet of trucks to carry it round in.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
the enigmatic penguin of death made a very interesting article, it is worth a read.
Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
btw. i just now, after having watched that documentary, that that guy in the diagonese club who hits the bell and is well... furious with John, he played sherlock!!!
Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
I liked the docu too, apart from the bits that were just blatant free advertising for their own version- but the rest was a decent, interesting look at how the tv and cinema versions of Holmes and Watson have shaped and altered our perceptions of them.
And hearing Benedict read the opening of the first book just made me really, really want someone to pay him a big lump of money to do a reading of the whole first book (as a start)

oh yeah, i agree on that last part petty (there is however somewhere, him reading a sherlock story.. but i dunno what it was)
Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Oooh Id love to find that.
I also liked, well get spooked a bit actually, by Jeremy's Brett appearance on the Wogan chat show- when he talks about how Holmes is so inward with only flashes appearing through the cracks, and he turns into Holmes right in front of your eyes.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Now that's what I'm talking about! Great episode. I don't know how well it will hold up to rewatching and critical analysis but my feeling about this episode right now is that its one of Sherlock's best so far and has singlehandedly made the entire season worth the wait.

Daily Mail is about as reliable as the National Enquirer, that's not just a Petty thing.
Fingers crossed that we don't have to wait two years for the next season though. Didn't Norc or someone post a rumor or comment to that effect a few days ago?
Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Glad to hear you liked it Eldo.
I remember we talked about how long it might be before the next series, but I don't think there were any actual rumours to that effect.
Norc might have more information though.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
What amazes me is how much they're able to squeeze into a single episode. The first two episodes felt like they just breezed by pretty inconsequentially for the most part, but this one was so dense with character stuff, introductions, plot twists and the like. At the 40 minute mark I felt like the episode was wrapping up but then I looked at the time and saw it wasn't even halfway done. It reminded me of A Scandal in Belgravia, which was also extremely dense and had a mid-point that felt like a climax. But I didn't think either were overstuffed or poorly paced. It felt like a movie, and was movie length obviously, but crams in more storytelling than some movies twice as long.
Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
One reviewer commented that one of the reasons it worked so well is they had done the ground work on the characters in the first two episodes (had the wedding been act one of this episode it would not have worked)- and I think there is a lot of truth to that.
Typical Moffat though, not only pulls the best ep of the series out but redeems and improves the previous two at the same time!
Ive seen it twice now Eldo- once on my own and once with Nagual today- it not only stood up to a rewatch it was even better!

- Spoiler:
- (And as I said before all the clues in plain sight- almost one of the first things out of the bad guys mouth in the opening scene when Moff is misdirection you into thinking its google glasses at the Parliamentary Committee is "I have an exceptional memory")

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Maybe they planned it that way as well. Using the two first episodes to build up to a tight packed finale. With Moffat and Gatiss playing such a large role in Thompsons episode this time round, that actually doesn't sound that unlikely.
And yeah, a bit of a lesson in how the tabloid world works as well there. A bit of a expertly directed kick there from Moffat? I think that quite likely.

I don't really buy that. Obviously there were too many new characters being introduced in this episode for them to have also done the wedding and Janine, but that was still a sub-par episode, period (although I believe I liked it more than you did ).
Moffat has written the best episodes of all three series, though.
Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
I still think the first two are too weak, and too padded, but I think now they did serve a purpose for this episode.
And I also think Blue they were carefully planned that way.
"Moffat has written the best episodes of all three series, though."- Eldo
The best two episodes in my opinion as Scandal is in my view to the same standard as this one was. Two exceptionally good episodes.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
I got that feeling too, Petty.
Eldo might be right on wether it worked or not though.
Personally, I don't think it would have stood that much out if both episodes hadn't been like that. And one necesitated by the last series finale and the other by this series finale. I think that's defensible.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
I seriously dont think they made the first two intentionally weak just so the third would stand out in comparison. The first two were pretty weak. period. It wasnt another of Moffats cunning plans.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Thats not what I meant- I dont think they do think they were weak or they would not have made them- I personally think they were weaker, but thats just my opinion- but I do think the way they were paced, the focus on character over mystery solving was quite deliberate as were obviously all the clues strewn through them that tied together in the finale.
In that regard the entire series was indeed a coherent plan by Moffat and Gattiss in which all the character building in the first two paid off.
