Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
well I saw it,
- Spoiler:
- and the first 3/4 was great fun, but it lost me when they got to Appledore, it suddenly went flat, and I lost interest a bit. it seemed to grind to a halt, dunno maybe it was the combo of too many laconic characters in one spot just sitting around. Anyway I prefer Mary now, she has an interesting edge whereas before it was getting a bit domesticated. Watching this episode makes me even more pissed off about the first two, what a waste, we could have had three fantastic Sherlocky episodes instead of only one. I wish all 3 had been this good. this episode was more like all the past series in style and this is what i was expecting I suppose, so when things go off kilter it doesnt feel like the same Sherlockworld, well to me anyway. glad Moriartys back he was the best villain, I wasnt very scared by Magnussen? sorry cant spell it.

Dear old Jeremy Brett, how I enjoyed his eccentric take on Sherlock !
I agree with you figgs, to a point, All I can say is, "Watch out for the quiet ones " I wasnt impressed by Magnus-wots-his-name either but, I think thats what they want you to think ? quiet before the storm maybe ?

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
I may be conventional, but Jeremy Brett's eccentricities just annoy me - my view of Sherlock was solidified by Basil Rathbone. I may be okay with the modern BBC version because they so clearly are modernizing it. In the Brett versions much seems to align with the book, so little quirks in character jump out as misplaced.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Basil Rathbone was a great Sherlock ! No doubt. And i think he essentially made Sherlock his own, But Jeremy was fun to "be" with. I cant help but think he let Sherlock sink into his mind a bit to much ? He became Sherlock I think ? I know in the end he was very ill but, I wonder if Sherlock persona played a part in accelerating it ?

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Halfy you are the only person I have ever heard say that. Its interesting as for me Brett is the epitome of Sherlock, as an actor he does have some febrile ticks I admit, but I think thats meant to convey his mercurial mind. I like Bretts theatricality, its some of my favourite tv, but its personal taste I guess.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
But I don't think Sherlock should be mercurial in the sense of his mind darting all over the place - it may appear that way to others because his mind is fast, but it should come across as more disciplined than Brett portrays him, to my tastes.
Both Rathbone and Cumberbatch project discipline. Might have something to do with last names that made them have to constantly control the urge to hit someone while growing up.

Strange, I feel that way about the modernised version. Like Figgs said, personal taste

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
From a different perspective you could say Sherlock Holmes fans are lucky that they are able to have such debates. As it means they have had several actors who have made great portrayals of Sherlock Holmes.
It's not like that in every case. Look at the terrible attempts to make anything Poirot related before Suchet stepped in and nailed the role. Peter Ustinov seems like a great person, but his Poirot portrayal...
And only to, slightly jokingly, throw another name into the hat.
I think I shared it before, but here it is for those of you who haven't seen it.

I actually like the actor, think its Michael Redgrave, who played Sherlock in the film, the Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. camp and romantic but convincing

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
someone on tumblr wrote LINK! :
WE ALL CLEARLY SEE THAT IT’S POLAND AND POLISH FANDOM DIED AND ALL IS WELL
BUT
SOMEBODY JOKED THAT SHERLOCK WAS TO FLY TO POLAND TO SOLVE THE SMOLENSK CASE
SMOLENSK WAS PLANE CRASH IN 2010 WHERE POLISH PRESIDENT AND 95 OTHER VIPS DIED
AND THERE’S INVESTIGATION ABOUT THAT AND MANY PEOPLE ARE CONVINCED THAT IT WAS A TERRORIST ATTACK AND SUCH AND MANY OTHER POLES ARE TIRED OF THAT, CAUSE THIS GETS MORE AND MORE RIDICULOUS
(here’s your wikipedia link about this, and HERE YOU HAVE THE ‘SMOLENSK CASE REOPENED’ ARTICLE)
I WAS OKAY, JUST LAUGHING, UNTIL I SAW THE MISSION CODE NAME ABOVE
UGLY DUCKLING
DO YOU KNOW WHAT WAS THE SURNAME OF DEAD PRESIDENT AND HIS TWIN BROTHER WHO IS THE FIRST ONE TO SAY THAT THERE WERE TERRORISTS BEHIND IT ALL?
KACZYNSKI, AND ‘KACZKA’ MEANS DUCK IN POLISH
KACZYNSKI IS SIMPLY A WORD ‘DUCK’ IN POLISH FORMED INTO A POLISH SURNAME, TO PUT IT SHORT

“We realised we would need a very, very good explanation,” said Moffat.
That's Moffat finally showing himself off as knowing nothing about television writing. A major cliffhanger explanation should be confusing, disappointing and turn the whole of your fandom against the show.

Very interesting thoughts.
But I'm not so sure, was he really there to..
- Spoiler:
get his hand on the some evidence of blackmail. I thought Sherlocks aim was to destroy the Appledore collection, leaving Magnussen unable to continue his activitites? Actually prosecuting him for blackmail seemed pretty much out of the question for me, for a whole lot of reasons.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
In the original story its based on
- Spoiler:
- the blackmailer meets a similar end, its not at the hands of Sherlock however, but they are witnesses and basically pervert the course of justice and cover it up to protect the shooter, and because the world is better off without him and Sherlock loathes him so much.
Watson is less comfortable with it and doesn't take to well to Sherlock joking about the description of one of the men seen leaving the crime in the newspaper report as sounding like a description of Watson (who it of course actually was).
Sherlocks aim in the story is the same as the episode- to retrieve the letters for his client.

Yes, I remember reading that. Though it was in norwegian and quite a while ago.
- Spoiler:
Didn't Sherlock make quite a mess of handling the case in the original as well?

Yes it wasnt his finest hour, and he had failed before as when the women comes to him asking him to retrieve the letters he tell her he had crossed paths with the Blackmailer once before, and failed.
