Re: Holidays and absences [2]
Halfy - talking of hiking I am considering another mountain for next year. I had lunch with the CEO of my company last week who is doing Mont Blanc this week. Will ask him that goes. Really want to do Elbrus in Russia but all advice points to kidnappings and terrorism so not sure that is a risk worth taking... even though that will tick off a second of the 7 summits!

Re: Holidays and absences [2]
If the boat waits long enough for a trip to Florence, it will wait long enough for a trip to one of the Cinque Terra. I'm with Figgy: get off the bloody boat. If you don't fancy negotiating with a taxi driver in a foreign language then take a canned trip to Florence but ditch the tour guide and do your own thing.
As for me, I think I'm done with mountains. I've got more interest in places like India.

Do Mont Blanc instead and tick off a second summit anyway, just go by another list

If she's right there and can drive you to Cinque Terra, then go for it. That deserves more than coffee : lunch or dinner.
Yes, done with mountains - at least the real kind that make you sick. I'm happy to get nearly the same results tramping over lower but scenic ones.

Re: Holidays and absences [2]
If the boat is just depositing people to travel to Florence who get picked up at a different port that's understandable, it's only about an hour stop. But if that other port is within easy driving distance then one should decant one's self.
Or just follow the tour to Florence, stop and have lunch with the Figgster hard at hand, and rejoin the tour to be driven to the new port.

Re: Holidays and absences [2]
The boat is there for the day. We all have to get back on by a designated time.... whatever that is.
It's more the fact that I am not there on my own and so if I get off... it will likely be with others!

Just say you are going off for a nefarious meeting with someone you met online. You'll likely get slapped on the back and told to "go for it, dude!", with no more questions asked.

Does your other half know you dabble on the Hobbit Forum? If not, that could be dicier to explain than meeting another woman.

Ah, now that she'll be safely out of her parent's house, now she's willing to meet.
I'm all up for another attempt at Oxonmoot. Next year is better, if people start setting some money aside we can make it happen.
