If I had know how smoothly this would go I'd have been leaving much earlier. I built in a margin of safety when I changed my ticket: right now I have to wait until tomorrow afternoon. Sometimes caution simply doesn't pay.

I've got to admit I'm lost Lance- is that three weeks until you go off on a secret mystery mission in exotic climes? Three weeks till you steal a plane at the airshow to embark on a clandestine mission to exotic climes? Or three weeks till you get back from your super secret spy mission in exotic climes?

Yep. Not getting off the boat there though I don't believe. Not sure where the terminal is when compared to things to do.

Back from France. Very relaxing place, Toulouse, despite the fact that my schedule allowed for very little sleep. Had my first foux gras, (or however the hell you spell it) and liked it - so long as I could refrain thinking about what it was. Croissants every day.

Welcome back Halfy I trust you got some flea-ridden but hugely talented garlicky street artist to do a portrait of your magnificent hairy visage whilst there (as per international rules pertaining to US tourist behaviour), one that you can share with us (if its from the front ).

I have no idea.... is there a specific port that big cruise ships go in to? We will be there for the day but haven't planned to get off the boat.

Funny you should say it: at the main banquet they had a bevy of caricature artists at work. I did not partake, unfortunately.

La Spezia is crap, but a few minutes away is the Cinque Terre which are 5 little towns dotted on the coast of spectacular beauty. better getting little boat ferries to take you to each town as they are difficult by road. Or you could go to Sestri Levante also not that far away and one of my favourite places in Italy its so gorgeous. I think I posted photos of the harbour once.

Re: Holidays and absences [2]
Been to Cinque Terra. Absolutely stunning. I think hiking between them is well manageable by the likes of Lance. Knock a hole in the boat so they will stay a few days.
Unfortunately I loaned my photos away and never got them back. This was before the digital age.

Re: Holidays and absences [2]
At one of those the friend I was travelling with and I attempted a sort of cliff diving. There was coral at the bottom spangled with seaweed and sea critters: absolutely beautiful. Problem was, the water was so clear that the coral bottom seemed far too close to the surface for comfort (it was at least 15 feet deep). So we worked our way up, getting braver but still freaked out by the clarity of the water. Never went off the top - couldn't abide the sight of awaiting coral at that height.

Re: Holidays and absences [2]
Figgy, I didn't pick the port... boat just goes there. Main draw seems to be trips in to Pisa and Florence. Unfortunately the boat doesn't wait if you aren't there in time so won't be risking hikes or anything like that.
As I said, don't think we will actually get off the boat there anyway. Will probably wing it. If you find yourself in the area .. give the boat a wave, I might see you and wave back.
