Re: Doctor Who [6]
Rumour at full tilt again- PJ to direct one or two episodes of series 8!
Supposedly he and Moffat had a conversation at the UK Hobbit premiere- and PJ agreed to do it on the basis he gets to do a Dalek story.
I actually dont mind this so long as Pj only gets to direct the thing and is allowed nowhere near writing it. (And I suspect PJ knows his Who a lot better than his Tolkien).
Next rumour- JK Rowling is writing 'literature' that supplements the 50th anniversary episode and is to accompany a series of webisodes leading into the 50th.
Jenna, the Doctors sort of daughter form the Tennant era is to make a reappearance in series 8.
And finally, Capaldi will keep his Scottish accent for the part.
Make of those what you will.

Re: Doctor Who [6]
Well odd you should say that Figg- I think Amy and Rory may have an impact far beyond Mickeys!
'It's been almost a year since we saw them, but it seems fans of Doctor Who still haven't forgot the Time Lord's companions by paying them the ultimate compliment.
In figures released today of the most popular baby names in the UK, Amelia has rocketed into first place.
And it seems actor Arthur Darvill's character also made a similar impact - because the name Rory has hit the top 100 for the first time in 15 years.'- Wales Online
Even River has become more popular!

Hang on a minute Mrs Figg. Notice that Amelia (young Amy) is flying high, while grown-up Amy is tail-spinning into the ground. Isn't that interesting?

But everyone knows call your kid Amelia they will get called Amy most of the time in their adult life.
So naturally if Amelia has become much more popular Amy will have gone down. Thats logic that is

Re: Doctor Who [6]
Okay, I watched the episode in question and will now pronounce my breathlessly awaited opinion. I think Kafria brought it together best:
Logically Petty was dead right, but it's not always logic that counts. A simple change of the line from "I will enjoy breaking you in" to "I will enjoy breaking you" would have conveyed just as much nastiness without the implied rape, and is what should have been used.
Women's response to rape is something that men simply can't understand. Even the threat of homosexual rape to a man brings mainly feelings of rage, not the life-changing horror that the women here have portrayed. (This may be due to a male being intrinsically more of a fighting animal with a fighting response: at least in his own head.) Yes, we can make all the logical arguments we like about genocide etc, but in the end what matters is what shocks your audience, and though the male writers/producers etc probably felt they had toned it down to a quick implication, the response we've seen here shows that it still violated the audience.Kafria wrote:
....
....
I [thought at] first ... we should try to separate the gender and issue debate, but in my experience the perception of the horror of rape is different, for men and women. Yes a sweeping generalisation I know, but at the risk of shocking people I have to say that actually I find the threat of rape far more awful then murder or genocide. Yes I know that wiping out cultures and people's is wrong, I don't condone murder, I cannot imagine how painful torture may be, but rape is the act that I fear and hate above all others. I don't just mean male on female rape here either, but any kind of act of sexual aggression. I have touched on this perception before in how it impacts on women at a subconscious level. The problem is that even as other issues have, at least in public, become less acceptable. ..... I think it is difficult to separate this from any debate on the subject and simply dismissing those of the other gender as belittling the issue or having things out of proportion on either hand does not help. There is a difference, explanation and understanding are the way forward.
......
.....
As to if I would expect it: In Who I would say I was surprised, there is a strong tradition of adventure stories that involves killing the bad guys with no sexual overtones or implied sexual violence and I would put Who in that bracket if asked.
Logically Petty was dead right, but it's not always logic that counts. A simple change of the line from "I will enjoy breaking you in" to "I will enjoy breaking you" would have conveyed just as much nastiness without the implied rape, and is what should have been used.

Two people here, maybe three.
hen the debate was going on I thought to look the matter up on Gallifrey Base- always up for a flame war there- and eventually found a thread on the topic and the bottom of the page- 2 pages long, barely any heat at all.
It did not seem to cause much of a stir elsewhere, certainly not like it did here.
So whilst we can agree it clearly offended the females here who have said so, I wouldnt like to extrapolate that to the entire audience.
You never said if you enjoyed the episode or not Halfy.

It was fun, some of the same inspired silliness you always get in Who, couldn't see where the accusations of Amy just being a useless mockery of a female came from based on this episode; she seemed pretty useful.
