Just so you know though, if you don't worship Amy's performance you might be seen as racist against Scottish people who are, I assume, genetically incapable of acting. Not their fault. I'm sure it has to do with the English some how.

Scottish, is she? Suddenly so many things become ever so much clearer.

So is Moffat Halfy.

But I can see which way the wind is blowing here- fine. I'll stand alone and make my defense. Bring it on!

Harvest is beginning to take all my time, so I've only gotten to Asylum of the Daleks and I'm not ready to get into Amy/Rory/River discussions quite yet.

But throughout series 5, 6, and part of 7 I've been struck by how almost every secondary character is written contrary to traditional stereotypes.

Almost all the most memorable characters for me are women (Queen Elizabeth X, Vampire lady, Silurian lady, Sexy Tardis lady, Miranda and Jen from Flesh, Oswin from Asylum, Nefertiti, others).

When men do play a major role they're either a historical character (Churchill, Van Gogh, Capt Avery), a struggling father (Night Terrors guy, Craig, Capt Avery), or a total wimp (surrender monkey from God Complex).

Even the Santorian in Good Man goes to War is a nurse. Minor authorities seem to be almost always women, minority, or both.

I commented earlier that Moffat seemed to be trying to write some strong women characters, and Mrs Figg replied something to the effect that yes he did but they were all the kind of the same (I can't remember exactly what you said. Sorry.) It now seems clear to me that Moffat has had something of a crusade going.

So without going too deeply into Amy and River, what do the women of Forumshire think of all these women characters? I'm particularly interested if you have any favorites.

But if youve got to Asylum at least you've the Dinosaurs episode next that you were keen to watch.

It now seems clear to me that Moffat has had something of a crusade going.

So glad you are picking up on that, Dave. It is good I suppose, and I guess I shouldn't complain but it seems a bit forced.

Im not sure I would use the word crusade- I think he just prefers writing women.
If you look back over his writing record women feature strongly from the very beginning.

Press Gang- about an ambitious female school newspaper editor.

Joking Apart- a sitcom based largely on his own divorce. But again the female character was front and centre (It also recycled a real Moffat line, taken from something he actually said, although they replaced the expletive in the show- after finding out his wife was having an affair with someone who had got to know her because he was a fan of Moffats Press Gang -"Well, did he have to fuck my wife? Most people just write in!")

Then there was Coupling a sitcom which had four leading female characters and three male. He wrote ever episode of its successful 4 year run and again in it the male characters tended to be the butt of the jokes with the women tending to come out on top in the end.

And he wrote Murder Most Horrid- for and starring the much loved UK comedienne Dawn French.

And even Sherlock the female characters are more prominent than in any other version, he majorly upped the role of 'the woman', gives Mrs Hudson more to do and invented Molly to add to the female presence in the show.

Same goes for his Who episodes during the RTD era- The Empty Child has a main character who is a young woman that looks after the homeless kids during the blitz, Blink gave us Sally Sparrow, Girl in the Fireplace was about Madame Pompadour, and Silence in the Library gave us River Song.
