Petty's Purist LotR Edits [3]

Yeah, my monitor is not the best. That probably played a part.

I do like both the idea and handeling of the darkening effect, I just felt it got slightly overpowering at times. Though how much of that is down to the monitor, I don't know. probably not an insignificant amount. Which was why I mentioned maybe highlighting the faces and, you know, adding some focus in certain parts. Though I'm guessing that would be a monumental undertaking?

And a red tint should also be quite apparent as one clearly sees Mount Doom erupting over the mountains of Mordor in Minas Tirit in the film. Never really felt they got the real perspecitve as to distances across there.

But all in all a very effective effect.  

I have thought of providing percentages of 100 setting for brightness, contrast and saturation levels to match how it looks in my editing program, but with every tv and monitor being so different I figured its best for folks to set their own levels too suit (this sort of thing is quite common now even when watching professional films at home, they reckon most people watch stuff with their settings wrong fr what they are watching. People seem to think whatever their tv is set it will be fine for everything and never alter it, when really you shouldn't be afraid to adjust your settings depending on what you are watching)

I suspect the by the time of reading TH script he had given up trying entirely!

yep, & no wonder poor Mr Lee looks old & tired, its not just the accumulation of years that got to him, it was Peejeers blind refusal to abide to some degree to the books  

Love that story.   

Like there weren't enough good reasons to like Ian McKellen.

That must be from when they shot LOTR? I'm sure they just threw the book in the trash while filming The Hobbit.

Been thinking of redoing the LotR's edits over the summer- no major changes to them as they exist (unless anyone has any new ideas) its mainly because I have better editing programs now and more skill and experience using them, and there are some things I feel could be done better now (particularly the filtering but also one or two cuts).

Would anyone be interested if I did?

If you feel the need & feel comfortable doing it, IL give it another go ?  

I'd definitely send the flashdrive around the world again for a LotR upgrade. I need some more Who sometime soon too. I figure I'll wait on the DoS edit though until you've had a chance to integrate it with There and Back Again.

That'll be after the EE comes out then Dave (assuming there is anything in it worth adding!)

As to Who you have some big stuff to get what with all the 50th shows and the Doctor trilogy (which includes the 50th ep in the middle). but on the plus side you have till Autumn to be up to date before the new series starts!

can you make Lothlorien blue again? I never saw the green version but in films they use green for poisonous place not Elves. or filter out some of the blue and make it whiter and more sparkly like a Crystal. Maybe if you make it as neutral coloured as possible without making it b/w, so it looks like starlight.

A starlight ewok village look is what I was trying to get away from in the first place.

Leaf green!- and I much prefer it to the ewok look as the ewok look is the one thing Tolkien (via Sam) makes clear Lothlorien is not about- its green and growing.
"I thought elves were all for starlight, but this is more elvish than anything I can think of, its like being inside a song'- or words to that effect.
So the one thing in a purist edit thats out is the one thing PJ puts in- perpetual starlight.

its not all starlight. the farewell is at Golden dawn.

The farewell scene is not filtered - its only the arrival , greeting, Sams song and the mirror scene that is.

but the Army of the Dead is bile green, green is always associated with spooky, whilst blue is not.

No you're right. Blue is associated with Smurfs.

  



I have two issues with the blue- the first is the one I already gave, and the second is that it follows Moria- and where Tolkien quite rightly goes from the long dark of Moria to the sunlight and green of Lothlorien, it gives the reader relief and a sense of life and warmth again after the darkness and loss of Gandalf, its the light that heals and preserves. PJ for some reasons makes it all dark, either Moria dark or night dark.

In Tolkien's universe, the proper plural is Smurves
