Petty's Purist LotR Edits [4]

Well the introduction to Beorn scene is in. I rearranged the scene order too.
So now they are chased by the goblins to Beorns, and then there is the intro to Beorn, then they spend the night at Beorns and leave in the morning. Rather than arrive chased by Beorn, spend the night first and then meet him.

PJ#s version never made any sense as they begin the chase at dawn and cant have arrived at Beorns more than a hour or so later (if even that as otherwise the warg pack would have overtaken them, and there is no way they ran all day avoiding Beorn and orcs) but Gandalf still acts like its days end and tells them to get some sleep for the night.
So rearranging the scenes solves the time issues that arise form the sloppy editing in the original film.
And for my money it flows better too and feels more book like.

cant you leave the chase scene out completely?

Sadly no because of how it is shot -everything is either them reacting to being chased, or running from being chased. And the music sfx ect all support it.

So I left the warg pack in- not Azog and co as he doesnt get a name check in this version- just orcs from the mountains pursing them for killing the Great Goblin.

Up to the overlook at Dale now in the editing.
Running time so far is 45 minutes and 6 seconds.

For comparison the same point in the EE is 1 hour 50 minutes and 32 seconds.

Just finished the rough cut, still need to tweak some things, sort some sound issues out that sort of stuff, but it shouldn't change the running time much more than by a minute or so either way.

Currently the running time for DOS Purist edit is 1 hour 8 minutes and 31 seconds minus end credits.

The running time for the EE without credits is 2hours 56 minutes.

So thats about 1 hour 48 minutes of material that has nothing to do with Bilbo or the story as told in TH book.

The combined running time of AUJ and DOS purist edits is 2hours 40 minutes.

Going on that basis of wastage it may well be possible to have a single TH film by the end of all this of between 3-4 hours long.

If you were to cut that to make two more manageable films of, say, 1.5-2 hours each (something more in line with your typical family film), where would you put the breaking point? The apparent original PJ planned point of the Dwarves' escape from Mirkwood, or somewhere else?

Well AUJ is 1hr.22 minutes long and it ends where PJ's does, at the Carrock.
I could end at PJ's original planned point, the escape from the Elves. That would give a better running time, about 1hr 52.

Any of the other EE scenes make it?

Yeah the Mirkwood stuff made it in with some trimming. So the enchanted stream and Bombur falling asleep are in.

Weird thing is I need to get the theatrical edition to get a scene back! In the theatrical at Beorns Bilbo is awake and staring at the Ring, then he hears Beorn and pretends to be asleep as Beorn comes into the house. I wanted the very last bit of that when Beorn comes in and Bilbo pretends to be asleep but its not in the EE.

Id love to watch your version !

Right I think I am finished with the purist edit.
The running time has gone from 2hrs 40 in the first cut I did to 2hrs 34, which was puzzling me there as I just spent a good chunk of time adding stuff back in here and there I felt was needed in terms of watchable film and future proofing for BATA, as opposed to purely purist reasons.
What I have added back in I will leave for you to discover.
Just got to render it out now and hopefully get it uploaded tomorrow to the drive.

Thought you said BAFTA there for a second, though, who knows, perhaps your edit might actually win some awards. (As opposed to Jacksons. )

Oh, and great news of course.

Getting there. Rendered it out (at a whopping 31gig!!!) now converting the raw file to a mkv (8.9gig) and then need to begin the tedious and lengthy task of uploading it to the drive, which if they havent improved upload speeds means probably best not to expect anything till tomorrow.

If folks want I can also upload a lower quality non HD version to Dailymotion- though there is noway to tell how long it will survive there- most of LotR's got pulled but then chunks of it are still there to watch after all this time.

Just realised all of Book 1 is still on Dailymotion- its an older cut so the Smeagol/Deagol stuff hasnt been trimmed and is still there and overlong and a few other minor changes that have made since are missing, but apart from that its there-





Start of Book 2 is there but only as far as end of the troll scene in Moria-



After that its all gaps Im afraid, start of book 3 is there but only up to them leaving Edoras and the last 20 minutes of Book 3 is there after Helms Deep, but the battle itself is missing.

So come on Eldo no excuses not to watch Book1 at least!

I always struggled with the opening of Fellowship, even in your edit, Petty, as instead of having Gandalf go off and Frodo moping around for years before leaving, Jackson has them leaving together. Meaning Gandalf must have ridden straight past the black riders within the boarders of the Shire, of course noticing nothing.

My version has the 17 year gap back in Blue. But Gandalf does still leave at the same time as them when they do set off.
I think you can get round that bit by assuming Gandalf goes directly south whilst the Riders are coming from the east along the main road. And that the Riders have not yet entered the Shire.

Although obviously that doesn't work in PJ's as he shows you the Riders already entering the Shire and killing folk at the gate before Frodo and Gandalf have even left Bag End.

Yeah, it's one of those seeming changes for convenience that's just not thought in the narrative context of the story as a whole.
