Raise and raze are two different words, whether you're talking about British English or American English.
They're pronounced exactly the same but have opposite meanings (one is to lift or build something, the other is to destroy).

I like your history posts Petty, so I did a bit more reading about Clan Campbell and the Dukes of Argyll online, and I discovered that the current Duke is the captain of Scotland's national elephant polo team and a two-time world champion.
