Re: Doctor Who [4]
Shame, looks like the whole thing presumably with more companions and rest of Tardis and their faces would be a very nice poster design.

Re: Doctor Who [4]
Nicely animated that vid Chris- excellent puppets too.
Couple of quotes I read today I liked, one from Douglas Adams when he was Script Editor on Dcotor Who-
"the trick about Doctor Who is making it simple enough for the adults to understand and complicated enough to hold the children’s attention"
And this quote from Matt Smith talking about a football club caught my eye-
"It's an absolute farce, a joke, it's being run by complete numpties."
A Numpty is a Scottish word for an idiot. Guess he picked that up from Karen.
I got hit by the TARDIS!

Moffat shaped rumours I'll be bound. I cant see him actually giving it away in any other way than one whch just make sit more mysteriuos.
Afterall the show couldnt go on under the name Doctor Who if everyone knows the answer.

Re: Doctor Who [4]
The George Foster Peabody Awards were first presented in 1941, and is administered by the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. Nominations are considered by a panel of academics, critics, industry practitioners and experts within culture and the arts, who look to award "excellence on its own terms". As its aim is to reflect excellence in quality rather than popularity or commercial success, the Peabody is considered by many to be the industry’s most competitive honour.
And Doctor Who just won it!!!
The presiding committee said:
'Seemingly immortal, 50-years-old and still running, this engaging, imaginative sci-fi/fantasy series is awarded an Institutional Peabody for evolving with technology and the times like nothing else in the known television universe.'

Re: Doctor Who [4]
ok, after much thought, heres my spoiler filled review of the Bells of St John.
- Spoiler:
- So the anniversary year begins. And it begins with the Bells of Saint John. A typically Moffat title in that like Lets Kill Hitler its meaning is revealed and answered before the intro sequence kicks off and has no more relevenace to the story afterwards.
In this case the Bells of Saint John is the name given by some Monks to the Tardis telephone, wich is behind the St John's Ambulance sign on the TARDIS. And it is news that the Bells are Ringing which sees the Doctor spring into action from a self imposed period of meditaton on the meaning of Clara in a 12th century Monastry.
Like her Victorian counterpart this Clara is also a nanny. A contemprary one in present day London, giving this episode a bit of a RTD flavour as London landmarks feature prominently throughout.
Clara has choosen to stay on to help out a famly she was staying with whose mother had died. The idea that Clara was all set for travel around the world and to visit the '101 places to see' in the book she has kept from a child, only to give that up to help a family in need is very nice, unfortuntley the whole thing is explained in one scene in a cafe. And either I am to used to Amy's Scottish accent or something but I missed the crucial information first time through given in that scene. The fault might be mine or her whole backstory really needed more than that one cafe scene and a slightly confusing one near the start where you could be forgiven for thinking she was the new step mum in the family rather than the nanny.
Connections abound in this episode. The Ponds are not entirely forgotten, with a childrens book written by Amy making an appearence, according to Clara 'chapter 11 is the best, you will cry your eyes out.' And Amy's reading glasses now being a perminant feature of the Doctor's.
There are also echoes of prevous episodes- the second series Idiots Lantern, an episode in which people are sucked into the Tv and left blank faced, in particular (although that in turn was reminscent of a 4th Doctor story in which a group of scientists were having their minds taken from them to be consumed by a computer and there were also shades of 2nd Doctor story the War Machines- nods like these I think will be a feature of the Anniversary Year episodes).
But typically of Moffat he moves the concept to something more modern- wifi. And that may well scare the little ones more than old tv's from the 1950's did, but it wasnt so effective for this older viewer although I prefer this to idiot Lantern as I was never taken with the baddie in it who is a bit to panto villian for me.
The premise of this episode is what if something nasty was lurking in the wifi- something that could upload your mind and soul and feast on it, leaving your body to simply die off? Its a nice idea and the increasingly panicky cries of those taken of "Help me! i don't know where I am?" on multiple screens are at times quite chilling.
There is a problem with it however and it is this- since War games in the 1980's hacking has never made for exciting drama. Watching someone type, no matter how fast they can do it, is not good drama. Never has been and I doubt ever will be. This has two big scenes that centre around hacking, and whilst both the script and the direction throw everything they have at making it tense; a download bar to act as a timer to race against, in Sherlock fashion reams of text scrolls up the screen as the two hackers try to out-type one another. And its still not dramtic tv for me.
The other problem I have with those scenes is that any average laptop would have gound to a halt with all the programs and windows they have going on at once, but I suppose in a tv show thats a lesser complaint. If CSI actualy had to wait weeks on analysis it would be a very different show!
So onto that plot. In the days of RTD's Londoncentric Who the bad guys of this piece would have been old Torchwood, and there are shades of the former head of Torchwood in the main bad character in this, Miss Kizlet, played brilliantly by Celia Imrie, as well as a hint of the Adipose nanny about her.
But more than those the character she most reminded me off was a very nasty verison of Judi Dench's M- maybe its the office with its big window overlooking London tourist spots that does it.
Its a great perfromance, icely villanous with a dark wit; "My concious tells me we should kill him."- "I'll inform HR"- "Actualy he has a holiday coming up, kill him when he gets back. Dont want to be unreasonable." And there is some cutting lines on modern society too- “The abbatoir is not a contradiction – no one loves cattle more than Burger King.” And there is a nice contemprary reference to the last time the bad guys activated the system -"Do we need another Londonwide activation? We can't keep passing them off as a riot." And I found her final lines at the episodes end to be genuinely disturbing.
One of the other problems with this episode its its yet another chance for new viewers to jump onboard- this means a certain amount of setting up and retreading old ground. Granted Moffat tries to keep it fresh- as we have already had one Clara seeing the inside of the Tardis before it would be a bit much to waste screen time again on her being amazed its bigger on the inside but this is a new Clara who hasnt seen the TARDIS before so what to do?- well the Moff solution is to throw a crashing plane into the mix.
What in another drama mght be the main plot devise, or a major set piece is in Who a five minute high octane scene whose main purpose is to show the Tardis is bigger on the inside, it can move in space and to introduce the Doctor as an alien wih two hearts who is a thousand years old and saves the day.
Its as entertaining a way as I have seen those ideas introduced in Who, but despite it all being well hidden behind the drama of a crashing plane it still feels a bit, to long term fans anyway, like repetition.
Indeed now we are onto the third version of Clara there is a bit of weight in just having to reintroduce her at all which stops this episode getting up to the heights of others in Moffats and Smiths run.
And the character of Clara is part of the problem. She is still too enigmatic and dare I say, to much like Amy: no onscreen family (there is a single delightful reference to her Dad hating the government and the Doctos promise he will 'look into for him'), there is a big mystery surrounding her and the Doctor has met her before.
But unlike Amy whom within a few minutes of meeting the adult version in 11th Hour we knew was angry, and we knew had a difficuly childhood thank to refusing to accept the Doctor was not real and that therefore explained her present actions and attitude towrads the Doctor. And Rose and Donna we knew more about within in the first fifteen minutes of meeting them than we know about Clara by episodes end. There needs to be a bit more flesh on her character bones, and hopefully this will come in the next few episodes.
Another problem this episode suffers from is the lack of a good bad guy threat.
The spoon heads- which are upload hubs that look like people until they spin their heads round to reveal a scoped out hi-tech dish that nicks your soul into the wifi- dont really count. Yes they are creepy when their heads turn but they are just an upload point- in the end no scarier than a bank cash dispenser in that they are just technology doing a job (and somewhat reminscent in the way their heads turn of the things in the booths in The Beast Below).
And whilst Miss Kizlet is classicly evil we know she is only the puppet of her 'client'.
The big reveal of who the Client is, the Great Intelligence, makes the xmas episode more than a nod to old Whovians but it also means they need to keep it back till the episodes end to make it a big reveal, and this robs this episode of what it really needs- a good evil nasty driving the plot.
Now having listed a few thing that gave me problems in this episode there is still much in it I really enjoyed.
In particular the quieter scenes worked well for me such as when the Doctor sits outside Clara's house all night and their conversation, with Clara hanging out an upstairs window, is strangely romatic, like Who does Romeo and Juliets balcony scene.
It also has one of my favourite bits of dialogue:
Clara- What did I miss?
Doctor- Ooh. Quite a lot actually. (takes out notepad) Eh, Angie called. She's going to stay over at Neena's. Apprently thats all fine and you shouldn't worry about it like you alwys do, for God's sake get off her back.
Also, your Dad phoned, mainly about the government, he seems very cross with them, I've got several pages on that, I said I'd look into it. I fixed that rattling noise in the washing machine, indexed the kitchen cupboards, optimised the photsynthisis in the main flowerbed and assembled a quadracycle.
Clara- Assembled a what?
Doctor- I found a disassembled quadracycle in the garage.
Clara- I dont think you did.
Doctor- I invented the quadracycle. Ha!
I also really liked the cafe scene where the power of control is demonstarted to the Doctor as people in the cafe are taken over- its rather chilling and very nicely done.
Indeed there is a rather delicous unsettling, disturbing mood runs throughout this episode that stops you getting too comfortable or feeling too safe throughout and will have given many a child a tricky nights sleep.
Matt is in his stride these days and as always nails the Doctor to a tee, whether he is being exictable and childlike or dark and serious, and he does both in this episode or even riding up the shard on a motorbike.
Jenna also puts in an enjoyable performance but I couldnt shake the feeling I didn't really know anything about Clara still by the end, she didnt seem any more fleshed out a character here than she did by the end of either Asylum or the Snowmen.
Overall then- its an enjoyable episode with some very nice ideas in it. But the execution of it, particualry the hacking stuff as drama didnt work for me and Clara still needs some depth as a character for me to care about her more.
Afterthoughts- Clara gets the Doctors phone number form 'a girl in a shop' who told her it was the 'best help line in the universe'- now my initial thought was River, but you wouldnt really acll her a 'girl' in a shop- so my money is on that having been interdimensional traveler Rose who I expect to see in the 50th.
And why does Claras diary have no entry for when she was 16 and 23? And what exactly is the significance of the leaf she keeps pressed in her diary which at the end she said marked 'day one'?
Well those are my impressions, but I seem to be more crabbit than some on this ne heres a round up of reviews from the web-
'New Who helmer Colm McCarthy makes a striking first impression, shaking up the show’s visuals with Sherlock style text graphics and an arresting pre-titles hook that mashes fractured footage into one gloriously overloaded whole, a bombardment of information that builds to a tremendous pay-off.
He may have exchanged his professorial tweed for dandyish Victoriana but Matt Smith continues to be one of the truly top-drawer Doctors. He’s impossibly sweet and daft – yes, why wouldn’t you take a whole cake? – but there’s still an ancient, implacable face hiding beneath the skin (“This ends. I’m going to end this today.”) Here he cuts a rather more protective and paternalistic figure than of late – “You’re safe now, I promise,” he tells Clara, with just a hint of the Pertwee Doctor’s stately sense of reassurance.
In a sense this is a soft reboot for the Matt Smith era – new clobber, new-ish companion – an episode that arms itself with fan-friendly totems of the recent past (the fez, the Jammie Dodger, the declaration “Under my protection” from “The Eleventh Hour”, a little random licking) while launching the golden anniversary year with verve and ambition to spare.'- sfx
'it builds on the excellent Christmas special, and tells a terrific, logical and enjoyable standalone story, with a few bits and bobs left around to tie it to Who past and present.
Jenna-Louise Coleman settles into her role as Clara - again - as if she'd been working on the show for years, and the easy chemistry she has with Matt Smith, where both are giving as good as they get, adds a fun heart to the episode.
Debut Who director Colm McCarthy does terrific work. Whether he's shooting an action sequence as the Doctor rides a bike up The Shard, or putting together the witty comedy moments, he, like Coleman, settles into Who exceptionally well. Furthermore, he makes the most of London, not least when he sends Matt Smith on a bike ride around the capital.
The Bells Of St John, though, feels like a pretty much bang-on fit for the running time. It's packed, certainly, but to just about the right amount.
Bursting with ideas, but not too many so as to overburden the episode, this is one of the most downright entertaining and rounded Doctor Who stories in a while, and a real contender for the highlight of series 7 so far, perhaps with the exception of The Snowmen.'- Den of Geek
'The slick, striking opening to Doctor Who's 2013 debut 'The Bells of Saint John' immediately brings two things to mind - one, how far this show has come visually since its first big comeback in 2005. 'Bells' is expertly helmed by Who newbie Colm McCarthy, who's utilised time spent on location in London to impressive effect. It's all very well dressing up a street in Cardiff, but when you see those London landmarks, you just know where you are.
The second thing that occurs is how brilliantly chilling and clever the central premise is - a sinister Wi-Fi connection that swallows up human souls.
The new Clara is far more grounded and so far easier for the viewer to latch on to - how can you not love a girl who takes a cup of tea into the TARDIS? Still, there's echoes of both of Coleman's 'teaser' performances here - the rapid-fire banter that the Doctor shared with both Oswin and 19th century Clara endures.
Matt Smith's Time Lord, meanwhile, remains relentlessly entertaining to watch, a remarkable achievement 35 episodes into his tenure. He's a wonderful combination of magical imp, dark enigma and awkward lad.
Packed full of action, intrigue and even a sort-of romance, 'The Bells of Saint John' sweeps the viewer along on a thrilling ride - 42 minutes has never shot by so quickly - and also provides plenty of juicy hints at what's to come in future weeks.
'The Bells of Saint John' can be considered a triumphant return for Doctor Who. With a rocketing pace, glossy visuals and excellent performances across the board, this high-tech thriller leaves you breathless as an Olympian on an Anti-Grav motorcycle.- digital spy
'Equal parts The Ring and Black Mirror, and with just a pinch of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Bells of St John boasted a strong concept, and nailed the typical Whovian trope of taking something so familiar and commonplace, and twisting it into a nightmarish threat.
In fact, it was the episode's stylings that impressed the most – with Sherlock-esque visual markers, London-encompassing sweeping camerawork, and a soulless data-hub evoking the episode's snazzy, energetic and ominous moods respectively.
Yet again though, this was Clara and the Doctor's show, with both Coleman and Smith showcasing even more of the comedic and romantic chemistry that's guaranteed to entertain week in and week out. It may have been a hearty seven months since we first saw Clara, but this felt like the first episode where she received an impactful, lasting introduction – not least because she didn't die for once.- ign
Last night’s episode, The Bells of Saint John, the start of a new run, certainly showed no signs that Doctor Who is limping towards middle age.
Viewers in search of thrills will certainly have relished The Bells of Saint John. Set in modern-day London, the plot concerned internet users who, if they clicked on the wrong wi-fi provider, found their souls being uploaded and their minds being harvested by a malevolent force. It was a witty, cautionary tale for anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed by the internet. This was Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror for kids, a terrifying tale of information overload but without the grown-up, Dystopian despair.
Smith continues to charm with his eccentric cool (we saw the Doctor dispense with the Tardis and roar across London by motorbike) and the extraordinary range of alien and human emotions he can convey.
Clara is an engaging character: warm, brave, desperate for adventure. It’s clear her sense of wonder will make her a favourite with children as she travels in the Tardis – or “Snogbox” as she christened it.
Big-budget effects, a rapid pace, a sense of fun – there was much in The Bells of Saint John to enthral a 21st-century child.
Thankfully, Doctor Who’s Englishness has survived in the “Gosh! Geronimo!” guise of Matt Smith. As does the Doctor’s essential humanity – which is ironic considering he’s a 900-year-old Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. Adults are in awe of his intelligence, kids love and relate to his open-heartedness and curiosity.
At one point last night, the Doctor reassured Clara with his usual wide-eyed zeal: “You can run away all you like and still be home in time for tea!” That’s the beauty of Doctor Who. No matter how terrifying the encounter with the Daleks or Cybermen, comfy reassurance is never far away. Roll on the next 50 years. - Telegraph

Re: Doctor Who [4]
Big news on who is in the 50th Anniversary special! This is an offiial BBC announcement but if you dont want to know anyting about it then I strongly suggest not reading this spoiler.
- Spoiler:
- 'The BBC have now confirmed that the Tenth Doctor David Tennant will star in the 50th Anniversary episode of Doctor Who. The Tenth Doctor will be joined in the story by his companion Billie Piper.'
That makes it much more likely to me that the 'girl in the shop' who gave Clara the Doctors number was indeed Rose.
