Re: Doctor Who [4]
“The Weeping Angels have gone from an incredibly creepy one-off villain into creatures that, like the Daleks before them, have lost any ability to inspire fear. They are only terrifying if they obey the rules that make them feel real … and these angels never do. They attack you in an instant if you blink, but Rory and Amy can look away from them for a good minute to debate how to defeat them without any dire consequences. They zap you back in time if they touch you, unless you’re River Song, in which case they just grab hold of your wrist and don’t let go. They always cover their eyes to protect themselves from being quantum locked, except when they don’t. They turn to stone when observed, but can cross a huge, vibrant city full of people with no problems. They only send people back in time when they are weak, otherwise they just kill them (a la Season 5), but when they’re superpowerful in New York, they stick to the back-in-time plan. And it’s lucky that there are no pictures of New York City landmarks, since an image of an angel is an angel and all.”
— An interesting criticism of The Weeping Angels by FeministFiction, The Angels Take Manhattan Review (via neighborly)
Re: Doctor Who [4]
Brilliant. The angles went from scariest thing evah to... well... Though Moff does get one tiny bonus point for realizing people can blink with one eye at the time.

Re: Doctor Who [4]
Some of those criticisms, like the Angels crossing a city and them moving at the speed required by the plot, apply to their original appearance in Blink too. That's still the only Angel episode I've seen them in, and I thought they were great there, but I can see how they might get tiresome if they keep coming back but the rules are still wonky.

Re: Doctor Who [4]
its just Moffat lazyness, he used them because people loved Blink. I thought they were boring after that.

I don't know the details but he's apparently lost his Internet connection somehow. He popped by on a friend's computer a few days ago to let us know about his predicament. My fingers are crossed that he gets everything sorted out soon so that there will no longer be a giant hole left in threads about PJ and Amy Pond.

Yes, and that's what keeps us going Norc. If you and petty were both gone, I don't know what would happen

Re: Doctor Who [4]
I dont know, I fall down a well and when I do momentarily get a working palantir what do I see? Things to mke me crabbit, on the WHo thread too!
Its not on you know.
Right where to start- aha, Norcs post from the feminist idiot- that made me so crabbit I composed this offline incase I didnt have long enough for a suitable rant against people like this.
ok Weeping Angels. Whether or not they are still scary is a matter of opinion-I found them quite unsettling in Angels Take Manhattan and thought in terms of creepiness the cherub versions were a great addition.
I doubt they will ever be as unique or fresh as they were in that first appearance in Blink, but then the Daleks have very rarely been as good as they were in their first two appearences and they come back ever series.
But onto addressing the complaints in that post Norc.
1. They are only terriying if they obey the rules that make them feel real...and these angels never do.
Firstly only Moffat has ever written an Angels story, he invented them, so the rules are his to make.
But on the points raised Rory and Amy are never out of site of the liberty statue, when Amy is talking to Rory it would be in his line of sight, when the scene changes round it would be in Amys line of sight- its a massive statue the size of a building, you'd need to turn your back on it completely to not have it in your vision at all- and neither turn their back on it.
Whilst we are on the rules- although its not brought up in this particular complaint another common one is why doesnt the Doctor go and get them back- its not the just the year or location thats the problem- its the massive paradox they create at that time, making spacetime thinner than Kate Moss on speed. The TARDIS hates paradoxes, as has been well established in the show- they make her very ill- in the episode with the two Amy's the TARDIS tries to run away from the paradox rather than have to be near it.
'They zap you back in time unless you are River Song'- or unless you have not payed any attention to the plot. Why that Angel doesnt zap in time is not only explained in the episode its consistent with the information we got in the Angels two parter in series 5.
'They only send people back in time when they are weak'- um this is just wrong. They normally send people back in time and they then feed of temporal energy- the whole point of the hotel is a temporal energy battery farm for them.
They kill in Flesh and Stone because the Angels in it have been starved and are almost dead and dont have the energy to displace anyone- they also dont get any food from those they kill but rather use the bodies to communicate through.
As to the image of an angel- we dont know this wasnt happening-certainly we see several other resident looking out the Hotel than we know how got in there- they may well have been gotten through an image.
The only complaint that does hold up his how Liberty managed to move, as someone somewhere is bound to be observing it somewhere.
I could have done without the liberty statue myself- but you have to treat each show according to its own rules- and Who has a history of stuff that doesnt entirely make sense, or is a bit silly- like the Loch Ness Monster episodes.
"its just Moffat lazyness, he used them because people loved Blink. I thought they were boring after that."- Mrs Figg
I don't think a man who is show runner and head writer on two of the biggest shows on global tv can be accused of laziness. He created them he can expand and use them as he likes as far as I am concerned.
Ah that feels better- let the crabbit out!
Missing everyone here- hope to be back and crabbit soon, keep the home fires burning for me!
