Re: Doctor Who [4]
they certainly look alike, but I've only seen him in three roles (HP, hot fuzz and Doctor Who) and he always plays a grumpy loony. can he do doctor?
Re: Doctor Who [4]
You havent watched any of the 1st Doctor stuff Ive posted have you?
To put him in perspective his first human companions are not invited to go off with him to see the universe and have exciting adventures- he electrocutes on of them. Rigs the Tardis so it will knock them out when it goes into flight and kidnaps them against their will- at a time when he didnt know how to fly the Tardis and could only put it into flight- he had no idea where it would end up next- so the chance of getting them home ever again were pretty much nil.
He also very nearly smashes a cave mans head in with a rock rather than have the injured caveman slow them down when they are escaping.
He hasnt been mellowed or given a moral perspective by humans yet, he's pure Time Lord at this point.
Also this is a biopic about the early days of Who- so he is playing William Hartnell, the actor, not the Doctor- although no doubt there will be some of that too.
Hartnell, before Who was best known for playing hard men and gangsters and villians.
I strongly recommend finding the tme ,especially before the 50th anniverasry stuff starts- to at least watch the Unearthly Child- the first episode- which I posted a link to above.

Re: Doctor Who [4]
DVD remastered release of Ark In Space- definetly on my recommended list, even if the special effects of the day could not match the excellent script.

Re: Doctor Who [4]
A suitably unnerving trailer for an unnerving episode.
One of my favourite 10th Doctor episodes this, I think if I had been a kid when I saw this one I wouldnt have forgotten it in a hurry- creeps me out enough as an adult.

This one I liked purely cos it was the best interpretation of the Devil Id seen so far, & I liked the sound of the chains clanking & the Devils beady eyes!
Then I saw the Devil in "Season of The Witch" & thought how similar they looked. I got a thing for the Darker side of life. I find it ...interesting.

Re: Doctor Who [4]
Yeah they do- if the episode you are talking about is Rose then that is now tv effects of 12 years ago remember.
It looks like this nowadays-
Stills from Asylum of the Daleks and Dinosaurs on a Spaceship- but you have to watch 6 years of Who to get there!

Re: Doctor Who [4]
Wow, that definitely looks fantastic. I did have the fact that it was old in mind, but they still seem less than stellar, even for that time. And I thought they started in 2005, not 2001? Or am I mistaken?

Re: Doctor Who [4]
Actually you might be right about the stating date Lorient- but things have definitley moved on however.
Although even at the time I could have done the shop building explosion in Rose better with particle effects and after effects than the one they did!
Traditionally Who got shafted budget wise by the BBC- for most of its run they were made on shoestring budgets- thats why Daleks have a sink plunger for an arm!
The BBC dont like sci-fi- even Red Dwarf got shafted for budget no matter how popular it got.
Its only really in recent years, and in particular since Moffat took over Who and Sherlock and got a lot of clout at the BBC- that the budget has reflected the shows ambitions- and thats mainly becuase of its growing international success- its never been bigger so it is making the BBC a mint.

That's too bad that they didn't put as much into it before. I'm really excited to move forward through the series though

Re: Doctor Who [4]
As with all tv series you have some wonderful stuff to look forward to and some not so good.
But overall- the idea, the Doctor himself and I think especially appealing for you Lorient, the mythology of the Who universe itself, will pull you through the weaker moments that crop up here and there.
The thing with Who is that its a family show- grandchildren to grandparents- so sometimes episodes I dont enjoy now would have been perfect when I was 7.
And episodes thatare favourites now I might not have enjoyed as a kid.
I still think the best environment to watch Who is with a wide spread of family all sitting down together to watch it as an event.
This is why Moffat keeps doing diferent things with the format and the series- he says even when we have Who on tv and know its there, its return and every episode should be event tv.

Maybe I can convince my family to watch with me! I doubt it though, they never trust me on what shows are good.

Re: Doctor Who [4]
Just point out that no show lasts 50 years if there isnt something unique about it. They will never see another tv show quiite like it- not a fantasy, not a sci-fi, not histroical, not a horror, not a comedy- but it can and has been all of them and still been Doctor Who at the same time, just depends which episode you watch- thats its advantage.
