Only review I could find that wasnt blatant arselicking with no substance was from the New York Daily News- you can read it here- http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/tv-movies/new-hobbit-film-eye-popping-article-1.1209539?localLinksEnabled=false

Its generally very positive review but does contain the following worrying sign-

'Like all unexpected journeys, there are a few pitfalls along the way, most notably the tangential subplot surrounding bumbling wizard Radagast the Brown (Sylvester McCoy), whose buffoonery at times descends into Jar Jar Binks territory.'

I just read the NYDN article, Petty.

Lighter and funnier than its “Lord of the Rings” predecessors, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” remains faithful to the fantasy world last seen in the 2003 Academy Award-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”

I think the bolded is an encouraging sign. Smile Not to excited about the Jar Jar Binks comparison, of course.

Yeah but, 'remains faithful to the fantasy world last seen in the 2003 Academy Award-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”- is worrying to me too- not you note faithful to Tolkien or the book but just to PJ's own films.

Not too surprising, but another update from the Twitterverse: Dol Guldur will make an appearance in film one.

Jaragast? Razz

I suppose it's likely that Radagast will be involved with Dol Guldur since the trailers show his home being attacked by giant spiders. Going by the soundtrack though, he appears even before the trolls, so they'd have to be cutting away from Bilbo and the Dwarves entirely to show him. It's likely the attack on his home won't come until later, though.

I find it telling the one review we have highlights the -"tangential subplot"- as a 'pitfall' on the adventure.
Seems to follow the LotR's pattern to me- where its Tolkiens tale is a cracker- where it's their made up one its weak.
But one review is hard to go on, so will have to wait for more and to se it myself of course- but still- interesting choices of wording in that review I thought.

Hopefully the subplot isn't more than one long scene before the WC meets up. That would be VERY frustrating. I feel like I know what to expect though, at least plot wise, so I'm not as excited as I was two years ago Neutral My favorite parts of the book won't be until the next two films!
BTW, any posts yet that can give us an exact cut off of where the movie ends story wise? B/c if what Eldo posted secretly is true, and Dol Guldur is in it, could that change what we originally thought the ending was?

That's strange since they seem to have been otherwise very good about continuity. I wonder if it was done deliberately. Or maybe they really did lose the wig. Razz

I like the song. Nod And all the splashing about to the lyrics.

(intresting fact if you did the books on film very purist there would be at least two scenes of group hobbit nudity- running about the grass naked after the Barrow and the bath scenes)

Jackson talks Smaug-

http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2012/11/29/hobbit-peter-jackson-talks-smaug-cameo-creature-design/

'The trouble with redesigning dragons I’ve found is… you very quickly can go into science fiction territory, and I don’t want to do that,” the filmmaker said. “I want to present the most venal, scary, decrepit, nasty dragon I possibly can.”'

decrepit? What Smaug the Magnificant? Smaug the Golden? Cant say decrepit every sprung to mind as a way to describe him. Mad

“One of the things we’re doing on ‘The Hobbit’ — which is definitely technology that we have available now that we didn’t have 10 years ago — we often shoot the Orcs as people in suits but they just have a leotard on their head with motion capture dots on it. A lot of the Orcs even though they’re played by performers, the makeup is going to be CG makeup, which allows me to put their eyes further apart. They can open their mouths and scream in a much more dynamic way than they ever could.”

mmm- I woner if there is a risk of losing actors perfomrance to animators doing this? And the cgi wil need to be exceptionally good to hold up in a film that appears to have a lot of cgi generated characters in it.

Does partly explain why the orcs look so different to the orcs of the LotR's films.
