Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
A hint that is designed to mislead the audience is referred to as a red herring. A similar device is the flashforward (also known as prolepsis). While a foreshadowing only hints at a possible outcome of the story, a flashforward describes it explicitly. However, the difference between these two techniques may often be very vague. When it is done in a skillful or "honest" way in a mystery, however, many events which foreshadow the truth also work naturally at the darker significance (so much so, that some viewers were led to see the film twice, in disbelief at how effectively they were misled by character interactions which could be interpreted in different ways).
The television show Lost has made effective use of the flashforward technique, beginning at the end of season three with a twist ending in the episode "Through the Looking Glass". The first flashforward which the audience sees is originally believed to be a flashback, as flashbacks had been the only way of telling off-island stories up until that point. The sixth and final season consists of an extended red herring wherein the "flash-sideways" is originally implied to be an alternate reality but is in fact revealed in the season finale to be a purgatory state taking place outside chronological time.

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
was it something the film crew hinted to or was it something the fans believeed?

red herrings are most common in detective mysterious Norc- where clues seem to point in a direction thats not true. Its a false trail.
The clip I posted doesnt have a red herring- its foreshadowing- Gandalf saying something that will later be of great relevance when Bilbo meets Gollum and takes pity on him and spares his life.

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
It's about 10 minutes in right now. Neil Finn is performing and apparently he's going to play "Song of the Lonely Mountain" at some point.
I'll probably leave this on in the background but I have to focus on working on something else tonight.
EDIT: The schedule, courtesy of TORn. All times are for New Zealand.
3:50pm - Show Opening/Welcome
4:00pm - Neil Finn Performance (set includes a performance of “Song of the Lonely Mountain” from the official soundtrack)
4:30pm - Talent arrivals, red carpet interviews & crowd interaction
6:30pm - Official Speeches
7:00pm - End of Show

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
Sound is pretty wonky but I think they've fixed it now.
Also, that is one long-ass red carpet.

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
I caught the very end of the ceremonies where PJ thanked a bunch of people and introduced all the main cast members one by one. It was kinda cool seeing everyone together but not terribly exciting to be honest. They're all going inside to watch the actual movie now, but they're not going to livestream that.

Maybe not, but the first round of critics will be publishing their reviews tomorrow. Among other things I can't wait to hear what they have to say about 48fps this time....

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
Yeah, I'm excited to hear. I think there's an embargo (restrictions) on what they can publish until early December, which is normal for big movie releases, but on the other hand, I've read a few impressions from the early screenings already.
Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
Oh yeah, embargoes!
But they've been intentionally building buzz so they now and expect there will be leaks!
Also, I'm fully expecting they'll do one more 11th hour edit before the general release in December based on the reception at the premier. It would sure be interesting to be able to compare the two....

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
Peter said it all will or should be ready two days before premier. sweats...
At any rate it looks now as if I alone shall go and view this long awaited extravaganza. I am purchasing my ticket early and............I'm goin' in !
This is way more exciting than the running of the bulls, the polar bear swim and the Ballet Royale du Canada rolled into one. Oh PLEASE don't let me cry when Thorin and the twin s go down. Please please please please. I will be all alone and I just know someone will hand me a tissue though I will already have one. Total humiliation.

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
Congratulations Leelee! Thorin and the twins should be safe until the 3rd movie in the summer of 2014, but you should probably take the tissues just in case....
That would indeed be something to see!
I imagine the poster art something like this:

I wouldn't be surprised by that. If I recall correctly PJ was joking that they'd just finished the cut for the premiere a few days prior.
Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
TORn has posted a bunch of video highlights of their premiere coverage for anyone whose interested.

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
Reports on Twitter are saying that Thranduil (click quote this post to see the spoiler) is in An Unexpected Journey, though only for a few seconds.
Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
Also, now that we have spoilery reviews coming out, I think it's time to bump the spoiler-free thread.
Also, I was thinking about making a new thread for the theatrical release since it's nearly here. What do you guys think?
