Oh just some random comment some dumbfuck posted on some hobbit story somewhere. Everybody jumped on her, fortunately, but it was just so shocking and uproariously funny it was worth posting.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Stills taken from the jap tv spot trailer- what the hell is PJ up to in these then?
Gollum at a distance? But then if it is Sting shouldnt be so bright.
Gollum, a sleeping/hiding/wounded Bilbo and a dead goblin- nothing about this shot makes me feel good!
This is the same weird stuff Bilbo is hiding under in the previous shot, but if its to do with the Gollum scenes why is Sting glowing?- maybe Gollum drags a dead goblin past Bilbo and it still glows for dead ones? I know in the book it says he very occasionaly kills a goblin for variety in his diet- wouldnt suprise me if PJ actually shows that.
Goblin town? Is it open plan under that mountain then?
Mmm, upside down? Im actually hoping this is the 'burrahobbit' bit.
Nothing good about this bit to say at all. So worng words defy me.
Hey a ledge and Im PJ- lets dangle someone of it- that'll be a bit of cheap drama.
Ok I have no idea about this one- some sort of ridiculous over the top fight Im guessing- lets not go five minutes without one of them!

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Its one of the better trailers so far- taken as a film trailer- but I really dont think its necessary to see Gollum capture and eat a goblin myself (might explain the pg-13 rating though)- and in the book its quite clear such an event is not meant to be common. Its not his normal diet- he lives on fish mainly. Even PJ's butchered LotR's managed to retain his love of fish.
Andf Bilbo fighting, even using Sting just to defend himself before the big moment he does so in the book is a terrible idea and will completly undermine the development laid out by Tolkien for Bilbo.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
I'm not seeing Bilbo in the second one. Could you provide a close-up?
I think the fact that Gollum occasionally kills goblins for food is very important to establish before the riddle "game" starts, or his character won't have the right balance between childishness and deadliness. It's important to Tolkien that the only reason he doesn't kill Bilbo right away is that he is not hungry at the moment. If that means watching him munch on a dead goblin, so be it.
The last one might be the confusion in which Bilbo gets separated from the company. For obvious reasons I suspect they won't show it as pitch darkness.
Edit: I just scanned the text. There is a lot more discussion of eating goblins than of eating fish.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Bilbo is on the left hiding under the brown mushroomy things in the second pic David. Just use control + to zoom in the page!
And yes the text does mention the goblin killing- but as a rare event- (the fish get there main mention when the fish riddle comes up) I suppose it is hoping to much to expect PJ to find a more subtle way to convey this- like him having some old Goblin bones or skulls on his island - its typically Pj to just have him blatantly eat a goblin right there in front of the viewer. (And how the hell cant he sniff out Bilbo when he is so close?)

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
I blew it up till it was pixelated but I still don't see anything that is clearly Bilbo. What parts of him are showing?
When Tolkien thinks goblin killing is important enough to be one of the very first things we learn about Gollum, including details like "he just throttled them from behind if they came down alone" it's hard to fault PJ for showing it. He's working in a visual medium after all.

Ah yes, I see him now. That would seem to be after the riddle game when Gollum is hunting for him. I'm very curious how they'll "show" invisibility.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
I agree, its important for the casual viewer to get a sense of how dangerous and yucky Gollum has become. Eating fish just doesnt cut it. Bilbo is in serious danger, and PJ has to show that side of gollum somehow.

I think the danger presented by Gollum could be gotten across in a less in your face way than having him just eat a goblin.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Im thinking that SOUNDS are more creepy than clear visuals. Whispering & noises in a VERY dark situation, not knowing exactly WHERE the sounds are coming from ? The odd slap,or creak, like in any good ghost story, put the wind up you (& make you "trump" more!) then when you can see whats in front of you. (shudder)

In the book it says that Gollum had killed and eaten a goblin "only a few hours ago" and that he still had goblin bones left to gnaw on. Seems quite reasonable to me for PJ to show either the act or the aftermath in the film. Even more so because he can't just mention it through narration like Tolkien did.

Im thinking that SOUNDS are more creepy than clear visuals.- Azroiel
My thinking precisely- there are other ways to convey the danger than just having him chow down right there on screen- it lacks any sort of subtly and as it panders right to PJ's insitincts he is (forgive the pun) bound to make a meal of it.
I doubt it will be what I will leave the films most crabbit about- that will probably something like mixing the troll scene with a warg chase to Rivendell or something, but I can still see it being a gratiously needless scene in a kids film.

Im thinking PJ will be more interested in kids reaction over Gollums gobbling. Hes of a mind that, kids, can handle,if not enjoy, grossness more than adults think they can. I can see him in my minds eye, sniggering as the kids in the audience go "wow", as Gollum snaps, slaps his gums & slurps over a nice fresssshhh Goblin, blood, trickling down his chin. PJ IS the "Bad Taste" guy after all.
