Though not referenced directly in the book it does make sense that Lake Town would have dandied up Thorin and Company.

I've always loved Lake-town and the people of Dale. The Hobbit doesn't really touch on their sailing culture but they sailed down the River Running all the way to the Inland Sea of Rhun. If there's some part of the backstory that PJ has to expand, I'd like to see him flesh out the culture of Lake-town and Dale and their ships more.

Agreed. It wil be a shame if PJ turns Laketown into just a delapitated unpleasant place, like his Bree, but worse and on water.

Well, it is fairly dilapidated and not too pleasant in the book. I haven't read the book in a while but IIRC Lake-town is not as welcoming as Bree. Still, there's more to it then that and I just hope that comes through in the films.
