TORn has some news about potential titles for the third film, along with another confirmation that it will NOT be a bridge. There still seems to be some confusion about that elsewhere on the Internets. Rolling Eyes

http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2012/07/31/60156-markmonitor-registers-key-hobbit-domains-but-why/

The potential titles, based on URL registrations, are:

The Hobbit: (The) Desolation of Smaug
The Hobbit: (The) Riddles in the Dark

Hmmm..It's hard to know what to make of that.

We pretty much know that the 'Riddles in the Dark' sequence will be in the first movie from what's been released so far, so that makes no sense as a title for the second movie (I don't buy the Smaug theory.) I wonder if they could be securing the name in preparation for a game spin-off or something from the first move?

Now I'm REALLY curious where they're going to break the movies.

Film 1 - Bag end, trolls, rivendell, goblins, gollum, gandalf leaves.
Film 2 - Spiders, Gandalf Dol Guldur, Dwarves caught, Gandalf Rivendell WC, Dwarves leave/escape, Dol Guldur battle
Film 3 - Laketown, Smaug, Battle of Laketown, Battle of Five Armies, Burial of Thorin, Return home.

Obvioulsy a little more fleshed out than that but that would be how I could see it going.

first movie will be called riddles in the dark, then an unex... wait. that makes no sense either.

maybe it'll be as *looking back* Orwell said, more room for everything, the hobbit + all the appendix crap and PJ's made up stuff.

I have a feeling the first film will be a lighter in tone, and more Hobbity, gradually darkening in the second film to make it slowly more LOTR. The first film will probably include many songs and be more childlike. Bagend, Rivendell, maybe starting to become more serious by the time Bilbo has escped from the Goblins and Gollum, I have a feeling Gollum will be the watershed, the point when things get serious. The Ring will not be overstated or anything, it wont be obvious, but I think Bilbo will be a changed Hobbit from the moment he gets it. I repeat, nothing overt, but he does lie to Gandalf at this point, and that is not like the honest Bilbo. Obviously the Hobbit was written before LOTR, so its only a ring that makes him invisible in the book, and doesnt play a huge role, but we know its the One Ring, everyone does unless you have never read the books or seen the films.

That's not bad, but "Out of the Frying Pan" and "Queer Lodgings" both are before Gandalf leaves, and we know PJ has filmed both. I'm guessing PJ will want to end the first movie with a bang, which could be flaming fir trees and eagles, but then rest at Beorn's house slows the story down again.

Actually Beorn's house wouldn't be a bad place to open the 2nd movie. It's similar to Bagend in that they can all hold council and talk a bit to remind everybody of the characters and what their quest is before starting the next action sequence.

That would put Gandalf's departure early in the second movie assuming PJ follows the book .....

On the title issue, I don't think it makes a lot of sense to call the second film There and Back Again anymore. Given that the story won't end until the third film, there's no "back again" in the story. I rather hope that they transfer that title to the third film and use whatever the new title is for the second one.

Assuming the third film is still about Bilbo of course. If it goes of into Hunt for Gollum. Or Frodo being adopted territory who knows? Probably have a ringwraith or gollum responsible for the death of Frodo's parents. Shocked Eru knows anymore. Shrugging

We know now that the third film is going to continue the story of the first two rather than being a bridge. Bilbo will have to share screentime in all three but there's nothing to suggest that he'll have markedly less time in the third film.

Well there certainly isnt enough in the book for 3 films so whatever he is doing it will either have to be made up completely or there will be less time of him and more WC, Necromancer, Dwarves and Goblins or something- either way as a percentage of film time-either less of the actual Hobbit ie Bilbo or lots of made up stuff for him to do. I dont see either option as a cause for celebration. Evil or Very Mad

It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie - and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.'

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, "a tale that grew in the telling."

Cheers,

Peter J

fuck this shit. I'll do like Mrs Figg, look forward to the elves, if there are elves, I'll be happy. And Benedict.

To hell with the Hobbit in 3 parts Extremely Crabbit Extremely Crabbit Extremely Crabbit this announcement officially makes me not give a rats ass anymore and I'm bowing out of the whole interest in it. I can not support a set of films that dilute the source material so thin that it will barely be a part of the story. The adventure of Bilbo and the dwarfs was NOT part of some bigger picture and should not be represented as one... Peter Jackson has lost his freeking mind. and any of my hard earned money not that it matters there are plenty of Yes men and women out there willing to line up and kiss PJ's hairy ass. Moon

I hope WB lose their ass on these and fans of the Hobbit as it should have been boycott Jackson's LOOSELY SUPER LOOSELY BASED films... Like I said I am out of this whole thing... I'm sure they will be entertaining films but they wont be the Hobbit. Which were the films I was waiting for and which aren't the films we are getting. if you think they are stick your head up your ass there's sunshine up there Twisted Evil

Peace out

TORn has posted another title story and it appears that Riddles in the Dark has dropped out of the third title sweepstakes. The new titles that were registered (presumably with a tradedmark office somewhere though they don't say) are:

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies

If The Battle of Five Armies becomes the title then that would seem to be the title for film three, but The Desolation of Smaug would seem to work better for film two, though it could also be for film three. Hopefully we'll find out for sure soon.

Interesting take on the matter, Norc. Perhaps There and Back Again will simply be dropped altogether. I have mixed feelings about that. On the one hand, it was the subtitle of the original book and I liked the idea of it being in the movie title too. On the other hand ... maybe it's best to distance the book from what this project has grown into. Rolling Eyes

I frankly don't give a rats ass anymore. I'll just wait for the movie and rant about it when it comes out. Maybe the second movie will focus on the people of Dale's story and their relationship with the dwarves, so that we feel the terror even more for Smaug. Smaug isn't really mentioned that much, he's just a dragon, but nowadays just a dragon is as scary as just a snake, so to introduse a more fully storyline make the audience connect more with the terror of Smaug. Make him even more terrifying and dangerous. But still, just see him as a hovering shadow. I don't want to see Smaug before Bilbo does.
