Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
I've been visiting Bree and looking at Production Vids... I actually think (if one can get over ones disapointment with what PJ did to the LotR story, his 'reinvisioned' LotR) that the idea of three Hobbit Movies doesn't bother me much. Two? Three? What difference does it make, really? I'll just have to put myself in a non-Purist mindset when I watch them. I surrender.
I think you're crazy adoration of PJ has wooed me a bit, Mrs Figg.
I plan to take these movies for what they are and enjoy them. Why get bitter and twisted like I did over LotR? If that's my plan, I may as well not watch them. And Petty's edits of LotR show there was much to admire in PJ's "re-envisioning" (especially the bits where he stuck closest to Tolkien, of course! )
Actually, I'm quite excited by three movies. [holds breath - did I say that? ] Yep! Excited!

Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
I can understand why people would be excited but my concerns aren't even really purist-oriented. I've come to terms with the fact that the films will be very different from the books. The latest announcement just makes me worry even more than I was before that PJ will be unable to say when enough is enough. That's an issue regardless of the book.
In my opinion, of course. I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade.
EDIT: That pic is brilliant.

Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
I see you guys, I personally have come to terms with the fact that the hobbit will be an adaption, so I would enjoy it all the same, but my main concern now is that the story and the storytelling and the whole construction of the Hobbit will be utter swada and make no sense and be dull. And I can't overlook that.

Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
I don't think the length of the movie (however many bits it's broken up into) is really an issue. If PJ and crew have been filming everything that they have come up with but with the view of trimming it right back, and then decide too much of it is too good (by their measure) to discard, then why not three movies? LotR should have been at least six movies (and just by sticking to Tolkien's ideas, let alone 're-invisionings' smeared on the top). I don't think the three movies will be spreading butter too thinly over bread. It'll be a matter of deciding if you like everything that's in the butter.
Btw if I had not read LotR (about twenty times) I probably wouldn't even have hated PJ's changes in LotR. I would have been blissfully ignorant. It would have been a good exciting movie with not a lot of Tolkien's depth, but I wouldn't have known any better!
I know what I'll do. I pretend that The Hobbit tale is an Oral Tale, past down through many generations, and so changed with the warp and weft of passage down the centuries of Oral transmission; and the True Manuscript lost during all that time! I'll watch the movies, but be happy I am the last person on earth who owns a dog eared True Manuscript; hidden away, just for me to read, a much better version that the crass vulgar Forumshiran type hasn't got access too. Hooray! Best of both worlds, methinks!

Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
Ive never heard such defeatist talk in all my lives.
What sort of spirit is this?- it is a sick spirit.
If you are right you are right.
And a purist is always right!
You don't surrender. You dont give in just because its happening.
You fight on! You rant, you fight, you yell and sceam and harass and above all else you be CRABBIT!!!!!!!
If I had given up being crabbit over LotR's, even after he had made them and I owned them.
Even then if I had let my crabbitness go a single jot, if I accepted defeat as you all have, I would have accepted them.
They would be there still, sitting unwatched upon my shelf.
But NO!
My crabbit prevailed.
It saw me through. And now I have my edits of them to watch.
Still not what a crabbit wants- plenty left to be crabbit about- but servicable at least.
Never accept defeat, save with your life.
Never accept compromise or lose all honour.
Never bow in acceptance or lose your self-respect.
Above all else never ever give up the crabbit!
For without it you are nothing.
Never accept compromise or lose all honour.
Never bow in acceptance or lose your self-respect.
Above all else never ever give up the crabbit!
For without it you are nothing.

Re: Countdown to Release - Update Film 3 confirmed, no bridge
So is Jackson shooting more material or simply editing what is there? Will each movie still be 3 hours long?!

Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
Apparently he's planning to shoot for another two months in 2013 but that's just to fill in gaps. He's already shot all of part 1 and the bulk of the latter two. We haven't had any word on how long the movies will be though; the three hour length is just an assumption based on how long the LOTR movies were.

That would be a bit short - though there might be extended versions for later DVD releases.

Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
I for one am happy about the 3rd film, more the better i say.
Maybe they should have made it into a TV series, an hour for each chapter. That would have been good.
I will read the book if i want the real deal

Don't let Petty catch you saying that Chris!
I honestly belive that a third film is ridiculous for just The Hobbit, we'll see how well PJ fills in the gaps with his extra stuff hes putting in.

Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
I understand and respect Petty's views, but i'm being selfish here.
If there was only one film we would be moaning about the bits PJ left out.
ie- Tom Bomadil, the scouring of the Shire Pippins bath song, Sam taking his linen to the laundrette and so on.

Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
I've just finished watching all the production vids. A lot like watching the appendixes on the extended Version of LotR. I think I'm at peace with PJ. He can have his revisioned Hobbit. I reckon I'm up for it. Three Movies will be okay.

Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
I see your point Chris, but I don't think most people complain about the stuff on your list other than the Scouring of the Shire, which comes with the big asterisk that it would not have worked at all in PJ's films. I know that there are some people out there who still complain about Tom Bombadil but I can't really take them seriously. He is the definition of what should be cut when time is at a premium. What really bugs me about LOTR -- and I think this is true for most of PJ's other critics on here -- is the stuff that he added and changed rather than the stuff he removed.
Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
While I still greatly enjoy the LOTR films, I have to agree with you Eldo. The stuff he added or changed was worse than the stuff he left out.

Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
Three films may mean MORE of the original The (actual) Hobbit is fitted in. If so, Petty might be able to edit out the unwanted material (say 6-8 hours) and keep 3-4 hours of the Quest of Erebor, so as to make One movie. Let's all pray to Eru on that!
