Doctor Who - Page 17 Empty Re: Doctor Who

Post by Pettytyrant101 Tue Jul 26, 2011 5:08 am

i thought the opener was entertaining but nothing brilliant- the second episode I found very boring. Havent bothered with the third yet- oddly it has a sex scene in it- Jack pulls some guy in a bar or something and takes him home- which the BBC have censored but is going out uncut in the US. When did that switch round? America used to be the prudish ones- and there was some pretty full on sex scenes in previous series the BBC didn't seem to have a problem with. Odd and I don't like.

Theres very little connection Kafria between last series (mini-series to be precise) and this one so far, seems quite stand alone, pretty much a reboot. The miniseries Children of Earth was really goood, very much in the tradition of Brit sci fi like Quatermass. Was five episodes, one a night for a week. Recommend giving it a watch if you missed it, the best Torchwood has been in my opinion.

I'm well excited, I'm really looking forward to seeing some Nazi's in Dr Who! Anyone seen any of the new Torchwood series btw? I enjoyed the last series, Children of Earth, but I've missed the start this year owing to an extended holiday. I wish I could watch it on iplayer, but the internet here is soooo slooow!

I'm up to date in my Torchwwod- and less than impressed. Its very, very slow. 1 story stretched over 10 episodes, and its well, odd. The cross ver with US tv makes for sometimes intresting but more often jarring viewing. Its also pretty unpleasant in a lot of scenes, COE was deeply unpleasant, particularly at the end but in an emotive way that was centred on the characters. This often feels more like 'look. Isn't this a really horrible thing to happen to someone' just for the sake of it and for that it doesn't feel properly like a part of the Doctor Who universe.

Not to mention his 20ft scarfe
Liked his assistant Elizabeth as well, best one the Dr had. Then we had the girl who wore nothing but
a bra and knickers made of leather, then i think his wife took over the roll.

Trust me Chris give the new series ago- the above is Smiths debut episode- which also sets up the story arc, but I promise you Smith inhabits the role so well you will not feel like you are missing anything only that you have come home. Trust your Doctor.

"My 9 year old got it after ep 2. Loads of kids did bless them. I hope they never find out it's too complicated for them."

Amazed by the latest epoisode of Torchwood- Middle Men- it sucked even worse than the previous ones! Heres a copy of my review of it from Gallifrey Base.
Warning **Spoilers** if you are watching on the Beeb who are an episode behind.

"Very mixed feelings on this. It had a constant feel of something interesting going on, of intrigue and possible revelations and then by the end, well, nothing had happened and it was back to that sad sinking feeling of having been badly let down, again.
I really do want to like this, I want it to thrill and entertain and occasionally horrify me and move me (as COE did) but I mean really, how much further has the plot actually moved since the end of the last epsode to the end of this?- almost nowhere. An asmathic snail could have moved the plot further in that amount of time, this is so dragged out its painful at times.
Oh and why is Jack in this series at all if by episode 6 his entire screen time is about 20 minutes if your lucky and useful screen time about half of that? His jacket has gotten more attention from the writers than he has.

As I find the entire Oswald plot yawnworthy beyond belief and the character dull as ditch water and the portrayal predictable I was mighty relieved there was a complete lack of him and for all its plodding plot problems it was still a better episode without that character than those with because at least I didnt feel like I was wasting chunks of my life watching his tedious tale unfold.
Also getting pretty tired of how stupid everyone is, maybe its a side effect of the miracle, at least that would explain why anyone wearing a uniform is either a thug or a complete moron. I lost count of the times stupid people in uniforms were duped or tricked by ruses a 4 year old child would not have fallen for. (Incidentally why did the army guys on the gate not fill Rhys with bullets? When he approaches they are in front of him pointing guns, he revs up drives at the gate and they are behind him shooting at the back of it-what? The British Army has had a fair bit of practice at shooting people trying to drive through road blocks and they don't tend to muck about- but that was but one incident of the ludicrous dumbness often on display here- almost the entire Rex plot relied on everyone he met being dumber than a rock and even slower on the uptake).

And then there is the actual script, which swung about from good (Gwens speech to the nurse) to amatuer (the opening for example where the only reason for the report on the 45 club they just made up was to have a dramatic moment when the dude jumps off the building less than five minutes later explained- sloppy, clunky and as if he let some kid in the office have a go at writing the opening).

And the ending? The sort of ending the word 'meh' was invented for.

Every episode I hope and pray for some enticing snippets, some intrigue about the Miracle and all I get are cliched moments of melodrama. Right now it may as well be the Silence behind it all, (I very, very much doubt it is, but it may as well be for all the differnce it would make to the plot so far- a shadowy group who are everywhere and nowhere and control the world from behind the scenes). Did RTD just watch the latest series of Moffs Who and think that'll do for me, saves thinking up a premise of my own?

So Middle Men- good title for an episode about people in the middle who really know nothing thus leaving the plot exactly where it was-still in the middle of nowhere going nowhere fast.
Please , I beg to the heavens RTD make someting actually happen next episode, time is runing out for this to even move up the gears into interesting let alone good. If it wasn't for the basic intrigue of the overall plot device, the miracle, this show would have absolutely nothing to bring me back to it.
3/10 "
