Re: News from the set [2]
Whimsical comedy is TH is the trolls not knowing what Bilbo is and ending up with a 'burrahobbit'. Whimsical are the elves teasing the dwarves about the length of their beards. Whimical is Beorns animals acting as servants.
It is not bunny pulled sleds and shit stained beards and birds nesting under peoples hats or the Head of Laketown chewing on testicles.

I wonder if there will be a flash back of Uncle Bulroarer knocking off the goblins head. The head then roles into a hole. The war was won and the game of golf invented at the same time.
Maybe Tiger Woods could get a cameo.

If they really did cast Tiger Woods as Bullroarer then I would be prepared to forgive quite a bit from PJ, because that would be hilarious.

Blind Optimism?
Hello all, this is Recoveryanonymous, but you can call me RA. I'm normally in the Hobbit Movie news forums, but I decided I wanted to post here as well.
I'm normally the last person to defend Peter Jackson, but for the sake of optimism, maybe he might pull all that stuff with Radagast from the theatrical release; I mean he did pull Arwen from Helms Deep and the Aragorn vs Sauron fight.
Thoughts? Do any of you think Jackson will pull at least some his ideas about Nazgul in tombs or bunnies?

Hi RA- good to see you here too- hope you stay about (check your private messages too).
We can but pray that PJ pulls back from some of the more severe inventions he seems to be perpretrating in TH- as you say he does have some form on this from LotR's so we can still hope.

Good to be here Petty and Julia. I cannot for the life of me understand the ax in the forehead. I mean sure the bunnies and birds are weird, but they at least seem like failed attempts at humor. What purpose does the ax in the forehead serve?

I heard somewhere it is a play on the name Bifur, Bifurcation meaning, splitting into two halves. its one of those arty farty In jokes that the crew thought was 'funny'. We the fans thought it was shite however.

I just assumed it was an excuse to make him a mute and that means he is easily identifable, can be used for humouress situations and they dont have to write any dialogue for him (which from a writing perspective with 12 other dwarves to come up with lines for I can actually understand-just the method they have choosen I hate).

Re: News from the set [2]
I think the axe, the bunnies and all was a very good idea. it adds to the hobbit's humour.
Re: News from the set [2]
I have nothing to prove it, but I have a nagging feeling that the ax head, bird poo, bunny sled, Nazgul crypt etc.(anything weird and creepy but not Tolkien) are carried over from Del Toro's re envisioning of the Hobbit.
I seem to remember PJ 'reassuring' us all when he took the reins that there was much of the GDT concept art and script that would remain. I'm really glad that this doesn't seem to include Smaug, which I think GDT wanted to do animatronically.
I actually enjoy GDT's worlds, but I don't think that they're a good fit with the Hobbit.

Re: News from the set [2]
There are references to the hone (or piece of the hone) in Donner's head creeping into Jacksonian defenses of the axe.
We seem to have: something 'similar enough' can be found in Old Norse mythology, and we know Tolkien liked Old Norse mythology. The same with the rabbit sled and Kalevala, although I don't remember the reference here at the moment, and so can't confirm it.

Re: News from the set [2]
That's a pretty tenuous defense of the ax head, and my respect for you as lore-master is only increased by your keeping a respectable distance from it.
I'd be interested if you see a bunny-sled in early literature anywhere.
I've been assuming that the bird excrement in Radegast's beard and hair was borrowed from Merlin and his owl in "Once and Future King" but perhaps there's an older common source?

Re: News from the set [2]
Talking of your status as Lore Master Elthir- Man of Dale does not seem to do you justice- perhaps a more Lorey title would be more appropriate- you are a Forum award winner after all!

Re: News from the set [2]
LOL David... and I really do want to find this rabbit reference in Kalevala, but the person who posted the information gave no specific direction as to where it lives specifically. If true, shame on me for forgetting it... for now I'll just assume I was suddenly distracted by something* the moment this description entered my skull-chamber.
And thanks Petty! maybe instead of 'Man of Dale' I could have 'Madman of the Wold' or similar. I think that's loremasterish, even though I myself claim no such high title in any case. And awards can be burdens too (well, aside from any pay increase, which I am thankful for at least).

Coldness from that coldest village.
There is ice enough in Pohjola,
Plenty in that arctic village:
Slush on rivers, ice on lakes,
Glare ice in the very air;
Rimy are the rabbits hopping,
Icy-coated bears are running
Up and down the snowy hill,
