Now give Dumbledore his robe back- Ally

You are quite right Ally- this is more suitable to Sherriffing in I think- classy and authoritive, not like that tart costume Mirry used to wear.

Its the Labour Party Conference- so what hot topic would Deputy Leader Harriet Harman choose to go on for her big speech? The Middle-east? The Arab Spring? The economic crisis? Scottish Independence? Attacking the Tories even? Um, no....

'Labour’s deputy leader put on a squeaky voice to describe herself as “Hattie, 62, from Camberwell...and here’s today’s news in briefs” in her closing speech to the party conference. The remarks were a clear dig at the page 3 girls who brighten up Britain’s papers.
Ms Harman is campaigning to have Page 3 scrapped.'
After revealing that she had read hit “mummy porn” book Fifty Shades of Grey, she added: “I have to say I don’t think it’s very realistic. Because, let’s be honest, what most women want is not a man who ties you to the bed, but one who unstacks the dishwasher while you watch the Great British Bake Off.”
Ms Harman first had a pop at Page 3 at the 2009 Labour conference.
And ahead of the 2010 election. she said she and “the girls in the Commons” would “gang up” against Page 3.'- the Sun

So is she right? Is page 3 a dispicable abuse of all things female? Or a means for a woman with poorer education and from a poorer background to make a good living or to move onto other things( quite a few have become tv presenters)?

If you are blessed with good looks should you be condemened for making use of them to better yourself? Is it any different from being born with a good brain and making use of it?
Discuss. Very Happy

ps the Sun ran this story under the following headline:

Leftie Hattie, 62, from Camberwell makes a right tit of herself

Very Happy You gotta love 'em.

Do you actually mean that you actually hate them Orwell or just what they do? Do you think there are any women in this world who don't actually care about some democratic rights, that are content in the world they live in and want nothing more than what is provided in their particular worlds?

I hate very few people, and I guess, in this case - not really. But the idea that one woman feels she can speak for another woman (without consent) usually creeps me out.

leelee wrote:Do you think there are any women in this world who don't actually care about some democratic rights, that are content in the world they live in and want nothing more than what is provided in their

Yes. Some women do just go along with things as they are and Democracy (or Female Emanicipation) is either something they don't desire or something they just have had no cause to think about. I feel these women should have the choice of having Democratic Rights though, even if they don't individually desire them.

Thank you dear Orwell, I did not ask that frivalously. I know some who honestly do actually hate others because they don't think the same on various topics, and that is a frightening thing. Hate is such a powerful destructive emotion when aimed at someone who simply does not think the same as the one filled with hate.
And, I also know some women, men also who do not care a fig about rights or no rights, even when they seem to be mistreated and oppressed. I used to wonder if they might be mentallly or emotionally damaged, and no doubt some may be. But I was surprised upon talking to them to find out that they simply see the world in a more casual fashion. They think it is rather useless to fight against something that they cannot change and are somehow capable, have the gift of I guess accepting life as it is with all its hurts and even terrors and finding something to rejoice over in spite of it.

In Western cultres it is (generally) safer for women to demand fair treatment. In some countries, it is positiviely suicidal to ask for some freedom from patriarchal rule (oppression). I may joke with the ladies, but having been the partner of a Feminist (though, clearly, not a man hater!) for thirty years, I am no believer in males ruling over women, or thinking things should be run on anything but a team basis, nor thinking a male is naturally smarter. This, of course, will never stop me teasing the ladies remorselessly about feminine stuff (real or imagined), just as I do guys --- or opening a door for a lass, that's only polite! Very Happy

Post by Pettytyrant101 Mon Oct 08, 2012 1:49 am

Things are heading for a fight again in the UK coalition govt.

Last week the Lib Dem conference was held- one of its main planks was that if the govt wanted to raise more money it would have to come from the rich equally as from the poor.
The main policy representing this was the so called 'mansion tax' on large properties.
On top of this there were rumours flying about Westminister that the govt was going to introduce further huge cuts in benefits and welfare amounting to 10 billion in cuts.
Nick Clegg, Lib Dem leader and Deputy Prime Minister responded saying he would not hear of these 'wild accusations' of an increase and Danny Alexander, also libdem but who is Chief Secretary to the Treasury said, "We simply will not allow the books to be balanced in a way that hits the poorest hardest".
So there you have it nice and clear- a mansion tax, no truth in 10 billion cuts and they wouldn't allow it if there were.

Now this week is the Tory Conference- they have announced, well guess what, yup that they have to cut benefits by a further 10billion on top of the existing cuts of 18billion already underway.
This despite the fact that when they announced the first lot of cuts that measure was going to get us out of recession by now and reduce borrowing- instead we are in a double-dip recession and borrowing has continued to increase year on year.

So if the Tory's cut another 10billion from benefits then the Lib Dems have to stand by their word that the rich must suffer equally- so what of the Mansion tax?

Well the Tories have already simply said 'no'- they wont be putting it forward- but, and this is the good bit, the rich will be paying their fair share, oh yes- just in a vague, rambling sort of a way involving stuff about loopholes and looking at closing down particular types of offshore accounts- in other words the same vague rumblings about these things we have heard for over 20 years without a thing being done.
Odd they have firm plans for what to cut from the poor that everyone can see- and even know how much money it will save yet can tell us almost nothing about how the rich are paying their share or how much money it will raise. scratch

On another note a report came out today that said if the UK minimum wage- currently at £6.19 per hour- had increased in line with increases in top earners over the same time period it would currently stand at £19.54 an hour.

All in it together eh Cameron?

Post by Pettytyrant101 Mon Oct 08, 2012 6:03 pm

The UK Chancellor George Osbourne made his conference speech today- 'highlights include'-

One idea he suggested was limiting the number of children in a family that should be supported on benefits.

He also unveiled a plan for workers to give up a string of employment rights in return for shares in their employer. The new owner-employee contract allows owners to award shares
worth up to £50,000 to their staff, in return for the employee giving up their unfair dismissal, redundancy and training rights and also the right to ask for flexible working.

The chancellor made clear he was not planning to change course and said a further £16bn of savings must be found by 2015/16 to meet his target of balancing the budget within five years. This, he said, would include cutting £10bn more from the welfare bill by 2016-17, on top of the £18bn announced in 2010.Mr Osborne said: "Let the message from this conference be clear: we will finish the job we have started."

So what avout the libdem pledge the rich would pay- well Osborne didnt forget them he said:
'the better-off would pay more in taxes, but the budget could not be balanced "on the wallets of the rich".

Mr Osborne ruled out the Mansion tax, which is unpopular among Conservative MPs -they all have mansions!-. But he said taxes for the most well-off would be increased in some form in the next few years, so that those "with the broadest shoulders" paid most.- BBC

So concrete plans to cut the benfits to the poor and to bribe them with share offers into revoking all the hard earned worker rights gained over decades and centuries, but for the rich he only has vague plans for them to pay more 'in some form in the next few years'.

He must think we button up the back.

Malala Yousafzai, I guess, got what she had coming to her. Fancy being positive about President Obama. Fancy standing up for girls education. Pull out the troops - give the Taliban a better chance to put girls back in their place. Fourteen? Why wasn't she married off? I'll tell you why - she was off to school. Infidel! Obscene child!

I found this a bit worrying- a short while back in a horrendous incident a man murdered to police women responding to a seemingly routine call.

Today a man who wore on a t-shirt that day on which he had written 'One less pig. Perfect Justice' was jailed for doing so for four months (and a further four as he was on bail for a possession of cannabis charge at the time)- so his tshirt slogan effectively got him locked up for 8 months.

Now while I have no sympathy for the sentiment on his t-shirt locking him up for wearing it seems a step to far to me and a serious challenge to the freedom of expression.
What happened to the British attitude of 'I dont like what you are saying but I will defend your right to say it?'

He was done under the Public Order Offence- which like Breach of the Peace is a bit of a police freeforall- it covers pretty much anything they want it to- normally its used quite sensibly as courts will throw out cases where its not- but not this time.

Its becoming increasingly worrying- the trolling stuff they claim is to protect people (and they emphasis children here) from being bullied- but in practice its open to the potential for serious abuse in curtailing free speech.

Some more details on this case- he was convicted for 'displaying writing with intention to cause harassment, alarm or distress' and the judge sentencing him said, "To mock or joke about the tragic events of that morning is morally reprehensible."

That might be true but I am not nearly convinced how that automatically makes it illegal.

And frankly the governments white paper on welfare reform or on the NHS could be said to be 'displaying writing with intention to cause harassment, alarm or distress'.
Also true of almost all our foreign policy documents on Iran!

Do you guys believe it is okay to deliberately and maliciously offend people, especially when there is an element of agitation to action involved? We have laws against offensive behaviour here - which we apply rarely - but surely sometimes penalties are merited?

Thinking more on this, one man kills two women and then another assaults (by word) their families and their fellow employees. (And, no, I don't agree with you guys that police are evil and deserve whatever they get). He's probably lucky a member of the public didn't offend him back by punching him in the face.
