It's mostly fluff. What a strange American cranberry farmer is doing in Stockholm. What museums and art exhibits I liked best. Where I'd been and where I was going next. Stuff like that.
If you want a translation though, you'll need to talk to a Viking.
I'd been staying on the Af Chapman, the ship in the background, which is run as a backpacker's hostel. The ship was having an anniversary and the newspaper wanted to write a human interest piece about the oddest foreigner they could find. Guess who they picked....

I'll look for those pictures later, but I don't make any promises.
We wont hold that against you, Dave, as long as you now and then croak out a few words that might be Swedish and boast about your Scandinavian (or Nordic) roots. We find that charming, it seems. But it's not charming if you brag about being American.

Thank you Amarië. Croak is exactly the right word! I keep trying to bend my mouth into those strange vowel sounds only because it seems to make you all smile, and I know I'll never get that soft G right, or some of those R sounds. Oh, and I have absolutely no sense of your grammar, which seems to only add to the entertainment value.
Among the older generation here in America the Norsk/Svensk division sometimes runs deep, and I found when traveling in Norway it was sometimes best not to acknowledge my grandmothers' Swedish roots. But on the other hand I had the privilege to have some long talks with some of the old Norwegians who had lived through the war as children, starving while they watched the ore ships from Narvik carrying Swedish iron to Nazi Germany, and others who remembered their parents telling them about the Swedes rebuilding Finmark after the Germans burned everything. In the North they seemed to talk about these things like they happened yesterday. With these people I was always honest. It's only right.
I guess that's kind of why I wanted to come out from behind the sofa here in Forumshire....

Re: Tales of Home [1]
Oh don't worry, I'm not a Swedophobic. We have furniture from IKEA and there was a Swede working at the pharmacy and I still bought stuff so we are like totally fine with it.
Sweden being "neutral" during the war is quite a sore spot. A stab in the back for some, how could our brothers do such a thing?
But for the younger generations Sweden is the source of cheap jokes, alcohol, candy and meat and, recently, "party Swedes", young folks who comes here for a while to work as waiters and such and to party hard.
So my first thought was to say something like: "You're Swedish!?! But you sound so intelligent!"
(Of course, if I was smarter I'd come up with a good joke." Swed jokes seems to have gone out of fashion, but I think perhaps the Party Sweds have brought it back...

That's exactly my point!
Edit: I should say we're the same where I live. 100 years isn't so long ago.
I know many of my families stories of fighting in Europe and suffering under the rationing at home. I think the people of your grandparents' generation would sometimes tell me their war stories only because I was willing tell my family's stories. We seemed to understand history the same way. Sharing stories helps everybody put their own stories into a greater context.

Re: Tales of Home [1]
After snowing here just like two weeks ago we had two back to back days of 90 degree weather (32 in Celsius). Now we're back down to the 60s and apparently the weekend will be even cooler. Sadly that's pretty much par for the course for schizophrenic Maryland springtime weather.
