Re: Tales of Home [1]
Youde think it was all sunshine & smiles, here in the south east of Britain, but its a myth !! Winters are long, dark, damp, gloomy, windy, rainy, cold & oppressive. Summer hangs on to the shirt tails of a wet & windy chilly spring. Its starting to lighten up a tad, by 7.30am, staying light till 6pm-ish in winter. Summer here is 2 or 3 weeks of heat, sunburn, noisy tourists, fighting seagulls off as they try to steal food from your hands as you walk, light till 10pm, & then its Autumn. Radiant, colourful, chilly. & then more bloody rain !

Here the sun sets in summer (at least the calendar says it's summer, the weather tends to disagree), but it is still quite bright at night. Funny how we don't have to go further south than Oslo to get noticeably darker evenings and nights.
Travelling south to Croatia and such makes it much easier to put the kids to bed as it actually gets dark in the evening.
Yeah, Maryland is on the same latitude as southern Spain so we have very clearly demarcated days and nights, regardless of the season. Unfortunately we don't have the same weather as Spain. Heck, I'd be willing to give up snow entirely (as much as I do love snow) if we had perpetual Mediterranean weather.

Eldorion wrote:Yeah, I don't know how I'd handle northerly winters. I'd miss the sun too much.
At least you guys get long summer days though, right?
you guys are so winey. Here it's dark like two months (under the horizon), and the sun is gone completely for one month. and when the sun is actually up during those three months, it's for maximum two hours.. like... it doesn't sound too much, but being way up north, sunset and all that it takes forever i mean, the sun is setting and the sky is red and every shade of it for three hours. or something.. northern winters are just as they describe them in game of thrones..
yah, summer is awesome long summer days, where's the night
Re: Tales of Home [1]
Pettytyrant101 wrote:Yeah in sumer doesnt really get dark as such here, you get a sort of light twilight all night and the sun doesnt even set till well after 10pm and its up again about 4am.
aww... that's so cute

wee, I am thinking this is very cute ^^ i remember going to Trondheim (Like as much in the middle of Norway as you can get) and it was really dark at night, it set around eight... felt like autumn, although it was late summer
here, if you're not in a shadow from a mountain, the sun literally never goes down

didn't you have like 35 degrees recently??
Re: Tales of Home [1]
In Celsius? Not even close, though it has been pretty warm. I think it got up to about 15-16 C last week. Right now it's about 12 and it feels like spring. I was outside earlier with only jeans and a t-shirt.
Re: Tales of Home [1]
So summer temperature, you mean?

Re: Tales of Home [1]
Sorry. I was out earlier but I'm back home now. I have a football game to watch but I'm almost finished with Part 4 so I'll get that posted before I go downstairs for the game.

American football? I saw that on the telly just now
Re: Tales of Home [1]
I do like to have some snow in the winter. The only snow I've seen so far this winter is when I drove 500 miles north to upstate New York.

You should watch it too, then! It's Conference Championship weekend, which is the last round of playoffs before the Super Bowl, which is the final championship.
Re: Tales of Home [1]
The coldest place I ever went was Venice in January at midnight. freezing fog from the Balkans. it was horrific. Bone freezing cold. Cold that makes you ache because you are shivering and hunched up. That makes your teeth hurt and your fingers burn. The kind of cold that makes you think you will surely die of hypothermia. The water taxis were like sitting in a deep freeze lockup. we ran from cafe to cafe until we reached the train station, and then left.

hehe, I saw some and then I thought it hurt and yeah. i didn't understand the rules
Re: Tales of Home [1]
It's not that complicated. The teams take turn having possession of the ball and while they have it, they try to run or throw the ball downfield towards the end zones at each end of the field. If they don't make it, they can kick the ball through the yellow goalposts, though that isn't worth as many points.
Also, Lorient, when you read this, I want you to know that I'm rooting for your 49ers.

Re: Tales of Home [1]
Think of it as like stealing the land from the Native Indians Norc but in a game format and youve basically go it.

oh, yeah, of course, it all makes sense now.
Re: Tales of Home [1]
Come on, admit it Eldo- American football is about trying to steal land (yards) from your opponent intil you own the whole pitch and get the ball into their end zone (and Im sure thats a euphimism and probably invovled squaws! ).
And you get there my means of forcable forcing your opponents out of the way.
Its American history and attitude distilled into a game- its why you lot love it, it hits all the cultural nerves, and no one else cares about it and thinks rugby is far better, although neither are as good as football.

Norc wrote:then why is it called football ?
Because it's just a variant of rugby football that has gone off on its own direction due to the cultural and geographical distance from countries where association football is more popular. It's the same reason that Australia, Canada, and Ireland also have their own versions of the game that they also simply call "football".
Edit: this response works to Petty's most recent post too.
Re: Tales of Home [1]
Anyway, the 49ers just won! The first game of the day has turned out how I hoped. The Baltimore Ravens start playing in about half an hour.
Re: Tales of Home [1]
They kick the ball now and then, and then someone catches the ball and runs with it while the other team tries to kill him. Sorry, try to take the ball from him and run the other way. Also kicking the misshaped ball between the goal poles is very cool.
All I know about this game I've learned from movies and tv series, so the last 3 minutes of the game is always in slow motion. True story!
