The cigarette-searching scene is in a different episode, though, and in 'Scandal', John and Mycroft had been willing to give Sherlock a cigarette as a test anyway. I thought it was fairly clear even in light of the later episodes, but maybe that's just me.

It is quit clear he had a drug problem in the past (and with that brain.. as he said in the hounds of baskervill "I need a case") but then switched to cigarettes. I mean, when you are so desperate to have a cig and uses THREE nicotin patches and that look upon his face when lestrade and co are "looking for drugs".

I can see that they would tone down the drug use thing. It wouldn't look good for BBC to advertise drugs as a way to become as smart as Sherlock, would it?

I wasn’t the only one who jumped early on during the scene with the three patches, was I? The way he holds his arm before he straightens it. I wasn’t expecting patches, but I loved the twist.

I think shrooms may come closer to capturing the exoticism that cocaine had for victorians. Cigarettes are kinda meh. It may have been more true to the modern character to have him play video games compulsively, but it would get no audience respect.

Now I remember the other great statement from the commentary. They noted that back in Victorian times Sherlock's use of forensic science would have been unique and helped place him ahead of the police. But now in the days of CSI, what advantage could he possibly have?

Moffat had the brilliant insight that forensic science could tell you in great detail everything that was present at a crime scene, but only Sherlock could realize what was missing. Over and over this is his advantage - the first use of this is his realization that the pink suitcase was missing in the pilot episode.

I think it would be interesting with a crossover with CSI's Gil Grissom, possibly with and team. (Not CSI Miami cause I hate Horatio, but perhaps CSI NY where they are all investigators and lab rats and everything needed at the time, which is rather hilarious.) And THEY solve the case in 45 minutes! ( Laughing )

I know the police is suppose to move slower than Sherlock, but really they seem like they are retarded. Seem though that it is his homeless network that gives him the biggest advantage, like when they search for the factory and his crew is spread out and searching everywhere at once. While the law would have had to wait for the results and cover all bases before sending men out to look.

Great point about the 'missing' evidence Halfwise, having only seen the first series and not in English, I miss some details, my brain is busy translating and things get lost. but now you mention it, its kind of original and well thought out.

When it comes to CSi and there like I am with Grand Theft Auto-

Halfwise not sure how exotic shrooms would seem even these days. In the late 1880's all sorts of stuff was commonly taken by folks, I am not sure cocaine was seen as exotic then- probably not as exotic as pure opium (which is still pretty exotic today), but cocaine, strychnine, arsnic, laudunaum were all routinly used and legally sold in chemists.

Good point about these drugs being commonly available back then. One of my favorite adaptations (not that I've seen a lot) is the one with Rupert Everett as Sherlock, and they put him in opium dens. It worked, partly I think because Rupert Everett just seems at home in an opium den. He and Benedict Cumberbatch are reminiscent of each other in many ways, I like them both as Sherlock.

I suppose instead of using drugs like heroin they could have made him addicted to those smart drugs that are supposed to make you brainier but in fact fry your brain. or even some weird stuff he finds on the internet like some Amazonian shaman juice. They could have even put a post modern twist on it and made him addicted to steroids or vitamins, he could have been taking far too much vitamin A and turned orange and shat carrot coloured poo a lot.

Small bit of Sherlock news, unless its been posted here already somewhere of course, but if not should please Norc. Series 3 has been conmfirmed with a shooting date:

'Sherlock Series 3 will start filming early in 2013, says co-executive producer Beryl Vertue.
But she added that it was still too early to say when it would be transmitted.'

Also presumably means all filming for TH for Mr Freeman will be finished by the start of next year.

I'm pretty sure principal photography for TH ends this June (or thereabouts), although there may be pick-up shoots sometime in 2013. Smile

Also, fantastic news about Sherlock! I imagine that we'll probably have to wait until about mid-2013 (that'd be 18 months again). I read somewhere that Moffat said once they were able to start filming (after meeting Dr Who and various other duties) it wouldn't be very long before broadcast. Very Happy
