Re: Sherlock - BBC
I don't know if this has already been mentioned, or if you already know this, but Sherlock has been nominated for a ton of Emmys! Including Best supporting actor in a Tv miniseries or movie and Best Actor (in the same category)

Re: Sherlock - BBC
The way the Emmys work is that each show submits a single episode for consideration in each category. In the case of Sherlock series 2, "A Scandal in Belgravia" was the nominated episode in all 13 categories. The full list of nominations for Sherlock is as follows:
Miniseries or TV Movie (A Scandal in Belgravia)
Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie (Benedict Cumberbatch)
Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie (Martin Freeman)
Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or Dramatic Special (Paul McGuigan)
Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or Dramatic Special (Steven Moffat)
Art Direction for a Miniseries or Movie (Arwel Wyn Jones, Dafydd Shurmer & Joelle Rumbelow)
Casting for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special (Kate Rhodes Jones)
Cinematography for a Miniseries or Movie (Fabian Wagner)
Costumes for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special (Sarah Arthur & Ceri Walford)
Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Miniseries or a Movie (Charlie Phillips)
Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special (David Arnold & Michael Price)
Sound Editing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special (Jeremy Child & Doug Sinclair)
Sound Mixing for a Miniseries or a Movie (Howard Bargroff)
Source: LA Times
All in all a very respectable mix of artistic and technical awards. It's worth noting that last year Sherlock series 1 was nominated in only a single category, Writing (for "A Study in Pink" by Moffat), which it lost to Downtown Abbey, so this is a pretty significant jump forward.

Sherlock lost out to Downton? For writing!!!
Welll that plummets this particular award in my estimatation.
Downton is just a soap opera set in the past.

Re: Sherlock - BBC
I've never watched but Downtown Abbey is one of the most popular British-import shows in the US. It shows on the same channel (PBS: America's version of public television) as Sherlock but if I recall correctly it has better ratings. No idea why or if that effects the Emmy voters though.
Re: Sherlock - BBC
I'm not suprised its popular- its how Americans think the English still live.
And it has a hell of a cast- mainly becasue there is a whole generation of quality female actreeses of a certain age who cant wait to put on a bustle at any excuse.
But as far as plot and characters go- its pure soap opera, just in a period setting.
Sherlock is a superior bit of drama in my view in every way.

Re: Sherlock - BBC
I can't say I was ever terribly intrigued by Downtown Abbey but hearing it described as a soap opera is sort of the nail in the coffin for any potential interest. I'm not sure if it's quite the same as American soap operas though, since it doesn't seem to be designed to run for thousands of episodes.
Re: Sherlock - BBC
HOLD THE FUCK UP! DON'T YOU DARE BULLSHIT ABOUT MY DOWNTON ABBEY, FOLKS!
Me and mom had this thing, every week when it was on, no matter the complaining dad and sister, we made tea, baked scone and bought cookies or whatever, benched oureself in front of the telly and shhhhhh-ed on everyone, drank our tea and prentened we were british. in that era. talking british to each other. end of.

Re: Sherlock - BBC
Yeah but you've got to admit its basically a soap opera in fancy clothes and period settings.
And you are happy it beat Sherlock in last years awards?!

Re: Sherlock - BBC
but who cares if it was!! love story, fancy cloths and dresses and british accent and country side and the whole thing about the master/servant relationship, what more do you need??????
Re: Sherlock - BBC
Not saying there is anything wrong with that Norc- just that a soap opera in my view- no matter how fancily its dressed up- should not beat Sherlock in the writting stakes at an awards ceremony.
edit add- and the whole thing about the master/servant relationship- Norc
See!! This is what Ive said all along- people love that class thing. PJ you were bloody wrong - you should have left the class system in as I have alays maintained. Sam should have started out the films as Frodo's servant- that releationship developing to equality is interesting to people!!!
