Re: Tales of Home [9]
Shouldn't these be in the music thread?
That woman with the record on her head reminded me of something I saw yesterday: a guy wearing a wool cap on his head. Except that he hadn't stretched it over his head like you'd expect, just laid it on top like on a table display. His curly hair held it in place just fine.

Re: Tales of Home [9]
I love the arabic oud music. Much of it influenced medieval european music as the oud became the lute, but the musical style itself seems to have gone underground during the Renaissance and re-emerged in baroque music. I love the idea that it's played in Italian coffee shops.

Re: Tales of Home [9]
yes I love the fusion of all the peoples who live around the shores of the Mediterranean. The Italians say "una faccia, una razza", one face, one race. Well they did until the far right got a foothold, but it looks like Salvini is on his way out thank goodness. Italians love dancing, it must be a Latin thing.
This is from Sicily and you can clearly hear the Arab influences, they even have songs about being bitten by Tarantulas.

Re: Tales of Home [9]
I didn't realize the Tarentella was still alive! That's cool that popular music can sound so arabic.
The Tarentella goes back a thousand years in Italy, and always sounds Arabic.

Aw, she's pretty much a kid. I'm thinking the tarentella is to Italy what square dancing is to America - something you pick up in gym class.

Somebody must have just scooped off the sidewalk, or else they are warmed.

Re: Tales of Home [9]
Tromsø is on island and the surrounding waters are warmed by the Gulf Stream. It makes for very interesting weather! I remember when I was on the ferry looking out the starboard windows and seeing a whiteout blizzard, then looking out the port windows and seeing a beautiful sunny day on snow-covered forested islands. The blizzard seemed to end exactly at mid-channel which struck me as amazing, but all the Fjordlanders just yawned and kept reading their books, so it must be normal...

Perfectly normal. I'm on the coast too. I have a 15min drive from home to work and can have two or three weather changes on the way.

Pretty accurate. We've had a lot of snow! And pedestriants/tourists walking all over is also very common...

Norcy! Good to hear from you. I imagine it's probably a good idea to take the test in conditions like that.

Re: Tales of Home [9]
so my twin brother lives in Colorado (up in the mountains) and has dogs, and somebody decided the dogs might appreciate some shoes for when it snows.
