Re: Tales of Home [8]
Your right in saying you are happy he did not suffer. Maybe if the cancer progressed he might have had pain & no one who loves their pets wants that, ever. Its good to hear he was as happy & bouncy as he could be. Love & best wishes Norc, Ive said it before & I will say it again, I admire your strength.

Hmm...I just realized that Petty is now mobile. We may want to reinvigorate the shiremoot negotiations. Unfortunately the fall will not work for me, but people should start thinking. Oxford, I say.

Re: Tales of Home [8]
a meet up? aye! my last exam is in may. but i might need to work a little to get the money. i'm super poor.
Re: Tales of Home [8]
That sounds like some decent timing for me at least since I have a possible visit to Rome in that time frame. Don't know yet. Otherwise I'm more poor in time than money at the moment - funny how that see-saw works.

Re: Tales of Home [8]
I think a meet-up is an exciting thought. I'm lucky that I like in the UK already. Its quite a tummy tingler to shake the hand of the person we chat to online

Re: Tales of Home [8]
The NYC Forumshire moot was definitely a lot of fun. Sadly I'm unlikely to be in Europe any time soon but if anyone is able to meet be sure to take and share pictures!
Re: Tales of Home [8]
My financial situation is better now than it was last year, but I also have grad school to pay for now, so we'll see. I haven't let go of the dream of taking the train all around Europe to see lots of different sights and hopefully forum people as well, though!

Re: Tales of Home [8]
It's an airport. "good" is the best you can hope for. "good and inexpensive" means check your pulse to ensure you haven't hit the afterlife.
Speaking of which, and this belongs on the crabbit thread: for years I've been carrying an empty water bottle through airport security so I could fill it up at the drinking fountain on the other side. They've started taking those away! $4 for a &%$# bottle of water? Do they think this is Europe or something?!

Ah. The same thing happens here. I find it very touching when police use their powers of roadway closure to honor their own.

Re: Tales of Home [8]
So then, while 100's of our Bobby's are lining the streets in respect for their comrade Ne'er do'wells are having a field day. No one should die in protecting us on the street. Society in general is such a mixed bag & the rotten pips in it make me feel depressed. A part of me says clamp down harder, sentencing should be tougher. Me & my mates were in awe of coppers as children. We showed respect & were mindfull of the trouble we'd be in if we were up to no good. Seems to me a uniform is a target to aim for, not the person inside, he or she is a nobody in the eyes of an attacker. Makes you feel better doesn't it, knowing that....

Re: Tales of Home [8]
I sort of feel police should be made up of folks without families, but what do I know. Maybe those with families will be more careful.

Re: Tales of Home [8]
Out of curiosity, why do you think that, halfy? I'm not entirely sure what you mean and don't want to make assumptions. Asking in part 'cause my stepmother is a cop and most of the other officers I've met through her have families as well.
It's not like every single officer in the department/force is at the funeral with no one left on duty elsewhere. Major cities like London have tens of thousands of officers.

Re: Tales of Home [8]
Police are in more danger of being killed than most professions. Is it good to put their families in such a situation? Same, even more so for soldiers. Of course you can't tell people not to live their lives just because of their profession, but it's rough on their families.
The statistics aren't so bad for cops or there'd be ceremonies all the time, so perhaps I'm over reacting. And most soldiers don't get deployed in war zones, or few people would volunteer (though I know some who did because they believed in the cause). So I'm really just wishing no kids would have to lose a parent.

Re: Tales of Home [8]
Ah, I get what you mean. Thanks for explaining. There's definitely not an easy answer to it. I feel fortunate that my stepmom has been off the street for a long time, though as a detective who works a lot of gang-related cases she sometimes gets death threats that have to be taken seriously. It's important work though and she loves her job, so it is what it is.
Re: Tales of Home [8]
Or perhaps if the statistics were quite bad we wouldn't get very many ceremonies?

And now there was nothing but the roofs of houses, sweeping along like a great torrent of stones and rocks. Chimney-pots fell, and tiles flew from the roofs..."
