Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
A little longer look at Tyrion and Varys' conversation and a very slightly extended version of the Jon and Mance one.

Ah, cool. I think that Tyrion/Varys scene is going to be great. (Whether it ends up making sense or not.)

Well, you didn't miss much. It was mostly just the interviewer standing around waiting for someone to turn up.
They did get a bunch of interviews, but they also missed out a lot of people. Nothing very interesting really.
At the end the interviewer ended up walking halfway down the red carpet to grab hold of the guy playing littlefinger to get a final interview.

It feels so weird that the thing that I'm excited about from that picture is Jonathan Pryce.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
http://www.denofgeek.com/tv/game-of-thrones/34619/game-of-thrones-season-5-episode-1-spoiler-free-review-the-wars-to-come#ixzz3Upd2m43AFive years in, what can meaningfully be said about a Game Of Thrones season premiere? That it looks and feels spectacular. That its cast was clearly picked from the top of the pile. That there’s nothing even close to its scale or budget on television. At this point though, doesn’t all that go without saying?
After four exemplary and expensive seasons, we’ve come to expect great things from HBO’s flagship as a matter of course. Impressive world-building, seamless special effects, forensically choreographed action, scares, laughs, pathos… The season five opener has it all, exactly as anticipated.
(HBO would hardly have tricked out the Tower Of London with all the trappings of last night's glitzy premiere if the episode was a dud. You could say - to put it in terms that the Iron Bank of Braavos might understand - that Game Of Thrones is simply too big to fail.)
Now though, the show is telling us that it’s time to stop taking all that accomplishment for granted. The Wars To Come arrives to shake us out of viewer-complacency and remind us that Game Of Thrones is finite and moving towards an endgame, whatever’s said in the press about ten-year plans, prequels and spin-offs.
This episode is the fulcrum on which the show’s narrative tips from stories of personal rivalries and revenge into a global perspective. “A chain of mistakes” has led them all to this point - what next? The Wars To Come asks. The Seven Kingdoms need saving. Ultimately, which of this lot will be the ones to do it?
Sounds pretty good.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
So the big rumor I'm hearing now is that
- Spoiler:
- the Battle of Meereen won't happen and Dany is going to either destroy or abandon Meereen and return to Westeros without the Dothraki. I'm not sure if I missed the clues to this in the impressions from the S5 premiere (I skimmed most of the spoilery stuff) or if it's just purist scaremongering. Blue, have you heard anything about this?
Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
- Spoiler:
- Hm, I've not heard that particular rumour. But there was a production photo going around with what looked very much like Drogons lair in the Dorthraki sea. A charred patch of ground, charred remains of his game and so on.
As for including the Dorthraki, it does seem both expensive and time consuming. So, I guess you could understand them not bothering.
That last Dany chapter is great though. Would be great to get Viserys back for a cameo. She'll already have met Jorah again sadly. That was a really powerful moment in the book.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
- Spoiler:
- We've spent so long in Meereen, and we're going to have the harpies and the brazen beasts in S5, that I really hope they do the subplot justice and don't just have it end with Dany being like "fuck it, I'm done here". I agree that her last chapter was good (even "the more she drank, the more she shat") and I would like to see the Dothraki play a bigger role in the story again. Maybe D&D will be able to come up with an alternative that's equally engaging, but I dunno. They've already cut Dorne and the Iron Islands; I'd like Dany's story to have some similarities to the book.
Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
- Spoiler:
- Yeah, George is always talking about what a shame it is the Dorthraki don't play a larger part in the series, and I think that's partly because they are going to play a large part in the next book. They did basically write them out of the show after the guy playing Raccaro quit. I think it would be fun for them to include it. And, yeah, several of the storylines seem to be loosing the parts that made me like them. Manderly, Davos to Skagos, Mance in Winterell, Arianne, Illyrio. And if they kill off Barristan.. Oh, I could go on for a while.
Obviosusly there will be cuts, but I'm not sure I always agree with their judgement.
(If they just cut Brienne though, I wouldn't complain. Except for Stoneheart, her arch in the last two books was completely pointless.)

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
Thanks for the link, Blue.
Regarding Brienne, I think her fight with the Hound at the end of S4 was actually an example of the show improving on the book in a small way. I agree that her recent arc in the books was pointless and dull, so it was nice to see some actual payoff from that. I don't want to see her die, but I hope that whatever her fate, the show continues to give her more interesting things to do.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
Well, she did say sword apparently. George confirmed it.
Brienne and the Hound.. I think as a moment. Yes, definitely. As making sense as part of the story..
There is so much odd writing in that part. The Hound and Arya walks up to the Bloody Gate says, "Hello, I'm a wanted murderer and criminal with the long lost presumed dead cousin of you liege lord." "Oh, that's interesting. We'll just let you walk away."
And it ending with fighting.. Why would Brienne and the Hound fight? Over who would protect Arya? It seemed contrived to me. Though they did make Briennes character a lot more aggressive. With her killig of the northmen and so on. So, I guess maybe I could buy that. But not fully.
It was a great moment, and I think that was what they wanted. But the writing leading up to it didn't completely justify it from a story point of view.

I think her storyline only really comes alive when she is with Jaime, maybe they are keeping her around until they can be reunited for a while.

Yeah, and that was..
- Spoiler:
- hopefully going to happen this season. But they sent Jamie off to Dorne instead.
There will be a fair bit of the Riverlands in season 6 though. As David Bradley.. err.. is that Sam? Walder Frey is returning anyway. So, we might still get it.

I thought it made sense. Brienne was totally devoted to the mission of rescuing the Stark daughters that she'd never even stopped to consider that they might not want to be rescued. She wasn't about to give up at the final hurdle. Meanwhile the Hound recognized that Arya was the only thing he had left to potentially salvage his situation (although that was looking like an increasingly long shot after Lysa's death). They were both wounded (more emotionally in Brienne's case), desperate, and accustomed to using violence to achieve their aims. It didn't feel like a stretch that once one of them drew their sword, even if it was just as an implicit threat, that it would escalate to a full blown fight.
Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
Yeah, fair point. You can make sense of it in the context on the show. While book Brienne would never end up fighting the Hound. I feel it's a stretch in as much as they make a whole lot of changes, some of them not making as lot of sense ot get to that moment. And I guess I feel this si generally how they treat the series. they want their moments, and the leadup. What's in between doesn't always hold up. They are not great lovers of continuity. At least it's not foremost in their mind.

Was this in relation to the Yunkaii apparently accepting Danys treaty? I just read something about that. That does give them the possibility of cutting the battle in it's entirety. But it would make as much sense that the Yunkaii came running the moment things went to hell for Dany in Mereen, with a literal civil war in the streets and so on. And then she can decend on their army with the Dorthraki. I don't know. I find myself hard pressed to predict them. And I guess it's as likely that they just cut the battle. Holding out some hope though.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
Apparently, the included flashback to the Cersei prophecy includes mention of her three children. As it does in the book. Forgetting the fact that they gave Cersei and Robert a common child in season one of the tv show which died of a fever as an infant, which Cersei talked about with both Cat and Robert.
So, basicly she would know to disregard the prophecy the moment Tommen was born.. Because I think she would know how many children she had had, even if the writers don't.
I hope it's not true. That would be dropping the ball massively continuity wise.
