Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
I suppose we needed some explanation as to how new white walkers are created rather than just animated corpses.... maybe that is it.

Aww.
Knowing me and my limited knowledge of Renaissance music, I've been trying to find some sort of sexual innuendo hidden in the lyrics.
From the youtube comments:
its about oral sex but ok
Knew it.

Though she never 'died', which is the renaissance symbol for female orgasm.
"...to see, to hear, to touch, to kiss, to die -
with thee again, in sweetest sympathy."
- John Dowland, 'Come Again'.

(Although, in the modern context, the title "Come Again" isn't exactly subtle either. )

Cross edit.
And though I greatly appreciated Sting's enthusiasm for Early Music, his voice was abysmal for this stuff.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
Sting's rendering is rather coarse and uncontrolled. It's perhaps somewhat charming compared to the more mannered performance of your second posting (NOT Sting), but 'Come Again' is one of the least technical of Dowland's songs. Many of his other song performances are just grating. I think he needed another several months of work to get his vocal control to where it should be for this repertoire.

I think that's why I like Sting's performance. It's "unstudied."
This is my favorite live performance that I've found on youtube.

That's a nice one.
I think Lachrimae performed by broken consort and no voice is perhaps one of the most gorgeous pieces of music out there.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
I have to be honest, I was a little let down by the latest episode. Putting all of the King's Landing drama on hold immediately after Tyrion's death sentence was a ballsy move, but to then only cover the first half of the Battle of Castle Black just doesn't feel worth it. Even without book spoilers, it's clear from the show that there is more to come. I was expecting them to show the full battle in this episode and then be able to focus on the other (arguably more interesting, just less visually spectacular) storylines in the last episode. I'm a little concerned that things will be rushed next week since they still have a lot to cover.

I'm afraid we're a little too obscure, Bungo. But if there's only two of us, we've still got a millenium of music to work with, so we may be okay...

Eldo... They are clearly dealing with it a little different to the book. I think what you are thinking of will be short and sweet.

Most likely, but the part of the book that episode nine was based on is not all that long. This is an instance of stretching the source material for the sake of spectacle that would make Peter Jackson blush. Okay, it might not be quite that bad, but it still feels way longer than it needs to be. There are so many characters and plotlines that get shortchanged in terms of screentime, and the Wall has certainly been one of them, but if you're going to make an entire episode set in one location, I think they could have done a little more, storywise. This sort of felt like they just wanted to have another "Blackwater" moment.
To be sure, the spectacle was impressive, but the episode as a whole wasn't what I was hoping for.
Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
The Blackwater battle was amazing, and so was the assault on Castle Black, but the Blackwater battle didn't seem to drag in terms of pacing. The most recent episode, while it was great, really dragged in some spots. (But the giants and mammoth were fucking awesome. )

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
This quickly became one of my favorite scenes so far in all of Game of Thrones. It really gave the sense that they are siblings. Brothers just shooting the shit about something from their past.

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
Oh yeah, that was a fantastic scene. The fight was great too, but Jaime and Tyrion's conversation rivals it as the highlight of the episode. Great emotional acting, and lots of layers of interpretation for the Orson Lannister story.
Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY
I really enjoy Tyrion's status as a social outcast who, because of his birth, must still be afforded a position of power, however. So although the scene between Tyrion and Jaime was excellent and encompassed important themes in the show, I enjoyed the conversation between Tyrion and Oberyn more. Tyrion is an excellent sympathetic character when he's sad.
Really the two scenes complement eachother. One explores the relationship between brother and brother, the other that between Tyrion and his sister Cersei.

And now there was nothing but the roofs of houses, sweeping along like a great torrent of stones and rocks. Chimney-pots fell, and tiles flew from the roofs..."

In my opinion, 'proof' that giants [or their steeds] don't have to be 50 feet tall [or however large Jackson's oliphaunts were] to be visually imposing.
'Less' can sometimes be more.
