Re: Future releases [2]
I don't think Aronofsky has ever made a movie that could be characterized as a cash grab. They're usually pretty weird and arty, and he took a risk tackling a Bible story in such a non-traditional manner.
Re: Future releases [2]
It didn't feel like a cash grab to me. I really liked how it felt like the retelling of a myth (which is what the story of Noah is). Aronofsky's artsy style is all over the film, and I didn't feel like I was being pandered to. I really liked it.

Re: Future releases [2]
Oh give me a break. Content utterly and completely aside, every single film EVER you will EVER see in a main-stream movie theatre is first and foremost a cash grab. What a load of misguided naivete to imagine that just because the subject is something interesting or entertaining to a person (or even that the film is directed by a masterful film-maker and stars incredible talent) that the primary motivation behind a film is not monetary reward.Recoveryanonymous wrote:bungobaggins wrote:Bluebottle wrote:From what I've read Aronofsky has done to the Bible what Peter Jackson is doing to the Hobbit.
So maybe one should accept some reactions.
That's what I was thinking, but I hold The Hobbit in higher regard as a piece of literature.
It's funny, I had my suspicions that those Bible movies were cash grabs. Turns out my suspicions were well founded. Will not be supporting that.
Now with some films this might be a bit more obvious than others.
The Hobbit comes to mind...

Re: Future releases [2]
They are making a film reboot of classic UK tv show Dads Army- hard to imagine what i will be like, but I do like the casting so far with Toby Jones (was the Dream Lord in Amy's Choice on Doctor Who, was some of the HP films) as Mainwarring and Bill Nighy in the John L Messieur role as Sergeant Wilson.
And the orginal shows writer is onboard as a producer which is a plus
Not convinced its a good idea- but they seem like good casting choices to me.
For those who have never had the pleasure of an episode of Dads Army (its about the Home Guard during WW2, made up largely of retired men and draft dodgers) heres a classic episode.

I used to watch it with my dad and mom. It was a staple on PBS and something we could all laugh at. I'm with you in wondering if it's a good idea to remake it though....

Especially as a film. Tv shows dont have a great record generally when they scale up for the big screen.
Glad to hear it was on in the US though- good family viewing.

Re: Future releases [2]
its not a good idea. It cant be replicated, why try? Its like trying to do a reboot of Monty Python, without the original people and chemistry its meaningless. There was a certain innocent humour about Dads Army that in these cynical days cannot be manufactured. It was a period piece.

Dick move Godzilla film-makers, recreating on-screen the realities of the "recent" tsunamis in Southeast Asia and Japan. Dick move.
I like Bryan Cranston inside a lab as much as the next guy, but this trailer is hitting quite a few of the same notes as the Great Unpleasantness of the end of the 20th Century.

Re: Future releases [2]
All my friends have been banging on about Godzilla for aaaages, I haven't even bothered watching the trailer, I will probably see it, but just how interesting can a film about a gaint dinosaur be? The 90's version was a cheesy mess.
I have however, watched Monsters (2010):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsters_(2010_film)
which was directed by the same guy, it was a very impressively mounted film (especially for it's buget), with an interesting premise and some nice performances...but I found it a pretty tedious film to watch, with very underdeveloped characters and a rushed ending.
I can't feel excited by Godzilla, merely a little curious.

Re: Future releases [2]
They have started shooting a new production of Macbeth on Skye- with Fassbender in the lead role.
Marion Cotillard is Lady Macbeth, Elizabeth Debicki is also cast although I dont know who as, there are not many female roles in Macbeth so Im going with either one of the three witches or Macduffs wife (which seems too small a part so I'm going with witch), Paddy Considine is Banquo, and Seasn Harris as Macduff.
Now unless Im mistaken, in order, that makes for a French woman, an Australian, and two englishmen.
It would be nice if just once the made a version of the Scottish play with some actual Scots in it
There is also a Sean Bean led kickstarter version of Macbeth called The Enemy of Man- they have a trailer to give investors an idea of what they are aiming for and Bean played the role on stage, still seems short on actual Scots though-
And Im not at all sold on the concept- 'The Enemy of Man will have a unique cinematic quality, stripping back the dialogue and cranking up the action.'
Sounds like a great idea- take the most famous wordsmith in history and remove all his words

"Make this film a reality on Kickstarter"
Pffffft. You've got two top billed actors in your cast, and you have the gall to go on Kickstarter and ask for money?

Sounds like the Spike Lee Kickstarter all over again.
I Fassbender though, so I'll probably check out his version of MacBeth, even though he's not Scottish.

Re: Future releases [2]
I think Petty's point is that since the play is set in Scotland and based (loosely) on actual Scottish history, it would be nice for a high-profile adaptation to have at least one or two Scottish actors as well.
Re: Future releases [2]
Indeed- bit like setting a prohibition gangster film in Chicago with an all welsh cast- just weird.

Re: Future releases [2]
Indeed- but despite the names both are english and they play it with an english accent.
And neither version they have done are 'proper' films- in that they are simply filmed versions of successful stage play versions, not proper made for film films- with all the usual budgetary constraints thereof.
It would just be nice for once to see a large scale, well funded production using some Scottish actors in the Scottish roles in a play known as 'the Scottish play', set in Scotland featuring characters who are Scottish.
It doesnt seem like too much to hope for really- yet it never happens.

Re: Future releases [2]
That does sound interesting. Surely it's appeared on stage in Scotland with Scottish actors?
And how Scottish sounding are you thinking, I wonder? Are you planning to rewrite Shakespeare's language to sound more like Rabbie Burns, for example?
Macbeth's castle was supposedly up by Inverness, right? So in theory he should have something like an early Highland accent. How understandable would that be for a general audience, do you think?

Re: Future releases [2]
One of the easier accents to understand- Karen Gillan is an Inverness lass for example. And Sean Connery was Edinburgh.
And of course it is has appeared on stage here, but not in a large budget film where it always seems to be english men with english accents.
The only exception I can think of, and it was low budget, was the Jason Conner version (and its still got a lot of english actosr in the main roles- but at least they put on a Scottish accent- with mixed success!)
As a huge Shakespeare fan, and of Macbeth in particular it would just be nice to see a decent budget version with Scottish actors playing the Scottish roles, no dodgy accents or english accents.
