Why are the forums so quiet of late?

Re: There and Back Again
DOS fallout effect- we are all still getting over that nagging depressing feeling that not only has PJ blown the chances many of us have of living long enough to see someone who cares about Tolkiens writing adapt LotR's, but that he has also just taken a huge dump on our childhood memories and love of TH too.
I put the quietness down to not even PJ defenders being able to mount a concerted defence of DOS's absurd mess and even they are sulking.

Re: There and Back Again
Yeah, I suppose when you let out a bit of arggggggggggggh that there is a bit of a hole.
I agree with you pettytyrant in that it does make me ill feeling to see this opportunity to experience something cool turn into a bad joke on me.
I don't think that it will erode my regard for JRRs works but it bums me out to think that a new generation of kids will grow up thinking that they know what Tolkien is about and now even if they read the books they will still be influenced and have a tainted view of them because of the weak work of the coven.
It is impossible to Un-see things. Once impressions are made by the films human nature will prevent first time readers from ever experiencing the stories for the first time again, It is obvious that an initial experience based on the books and the personal viewing screen of our own awareness while being directed on the trip by JRR is a very different thing from being guided/misguided by the movies.

Re: There and Back Again
I have that fear too- I would not have liked to have come to the books through the films I dont think.
But it has to be said there are those on here who are as passionate about the books as any and who did see Pj's work first, so I think (and hope) that if your the sort who is moved and drawn in by Tolkiens writing the books will still do work their magic, in spite of PJ and the Covens best efforts to destroy it.
(And do call me Petty, save you some typing)

Re: There and Back Again
I am glad that some Tolkien lovers were drawn by the movies to the books. No doubt with the numbers of people who saw the movies many may go on to read the books but speaking for my self...
Perhaps after LotR I may have been into reading but I can't imagine that TH movie would make me want to read the book.
Maybe others will be different. I imagine that to someone who saw the movie and liked it... and then read the book that it would be hard to make the shift to the book.
The book is after all a childrens book really. It has a light and silly tone and it is not some big deep multi layered thing like LotR is. It is a charming read and I love it but...
I bet TH movie lovers enjoyment of the book would be impaired in a big way by these crappy video game paced super action crappy movies spoiling their reading.
Hopefully I am wrong.

Re: There and Back Again
I think Im suffering "after shock", Im still staggered at the utter rape & humiliation PJ tried to do with The hobbit ! I say "tried" as Im determined NOT to let that Maori BASTARD taint my mind for any longer than is necessary ! Tolkien has & will reign long after PJ has sunk into mediocrity. PJ has to dry up sometime. The back slapping & Hurrah's will fade away, but, Tolkien hasnt & wont. I can go to the books anytime I want & Im back there in an instant, I can forget this world & all its got to offer me, even for just a day. But PJ If there WAS a law where guys like him that vomit vile Ebola ridden diseased work & claim it to be "based on....." could be prosecuted, sentenced & slammed in prison for Literary decimation, Then, please, let me work as his prison warder ! Id find tortures worse than any inmate could impose on him ! He'd be BEGGING for the "bar of soap " treatment in the shower room !

Azriel, PJ isnt Maori, he is a New Zealander. The Maoris' probably dont like him much either.
I agree with you guys about the aftershock feeling, I feel kind of empty and bored by the whole shennanigans. When I think back to the heady first days after they announced TH was being made. what a letdown, even my worst fears were nowhere near as bad as this parody turned out to be.

I'm glad I found the books before the movies, even if it was only a couple years before. I got to have my first read through fueled entirely by my imagination.

As usual, discovering a thread a week after it starts. My only comment on contemplating There and Back Again:
"The Horror, the Horror!"
"The Horror, the Horror!"

Re: There and Back Again
I have to say even my worst imaginings cannot equal what PJ will probably do, both with the story and characters, and with getting to stage a battle with multiple species and eagles and giant bats (they will be at least eagle sized I reckon)

Let's get into this film. First and foremost I want to debunk a few myths about why it's good.

No.

From capitalizing on violence and making it humorous and praise-worthy, and creating three blockbuster films out of one small children's book, Thorin's final words to Bilbo will ring hollow.
