Re: Tales of Home [4]
Is neoclassical architecture like that uncommon in Norway? Living so close to DC, which is chock full of buildings like this, I see it frequently and am perhaps desensitized to its charms, but the style definitely commands a certain level of respect and stature. I'd imagine the effect is greater if it's not something you're used to.

Sadly, I think urban renewal ate most of Oslo...

Re: Tales of Home [4]
Oslo is a bit of a mess of old and new, but as Norc says there are nice places too.
Is it uncommon? Hm, perhaps a bit. It's also a quite iconic place in Oslo because of it's history, those three buildings were the original University of Oslo, and location, smack bang in the middle of the city center. Also the classroom view isn't too bad as you look right up at the royal palace, which is what you can see in the backgrund of the last picture. So a bit regal, perhaps, yes, Azriel.
So I feel it's a bit of a privilege to have classes there.
It's the law faculty these days, and apparently ended up being that because the person from the law faulty very consciously stood himself at the back of the line when they were handing out buildings at the new University campus. So when it was his turn, that was all that was left. You wouldn't think he was a Professor of Law, would you.

If it's so beautiful, why wasn't it snatched up earlier? Bad electricity, plumbing?

Re: Tales of Home [4]
I have a love/hate for neoclassical architecture, theres a reason its used for public buildings and banks, which is odd because it is based on Greek and Roman temple religious buildings. Its meant for shock and awe and display of power, fascists loved it. It was also used by new democratic countries to display a love of ancient classical democracy and Independence from tyranny. I thank god for the neoGothic which saved England from neoclassical churches.

I love the McDonald's in Europe! Around here there's always either room to build or boring buildings to be torn down.

Re: Tales of Home [4]
I find it interesting that you're opinions on the design are divided. I wouldn't necessarily call it a paragon of beauty myself, but it's an interesting place to study.
Well, there were a whole lot of new state of the art then modern buildings available at the new campus. And I don't think staying in the city center was ever really an option before it became a "necessity".
On wether it was a good or bad thing, opinions are divided. The old University buildings are actually far to small for the faculty and they have to rent space nearby. Which in that location isn't cheap.

So, is it like a buyers market ? or are they finding their own reindeer herd? It was interesting to watch. Then what happens to the reindeer ?

You know what I found out a few weeks back? The most expensive sheep sold in the UK was £230,000 for a ram.

Re: Tales of Home [4]
they're finding their reindeers, separating them into the different owner's herds. They have this mark in their ear, they cut some squares or something on the ears when they are calves, no market. it doesn't work like that. they collect them, i think once or twice a year, to take to different places to grass, mark calves and pick out the ones to slaughter.azriel wrote:So, is it like a buyers market ? or are they finding their own reindeer herd? I assume it was bought by a Welshman (edit: or Welshwoman, since it was a ram).
Re: Tales of Home [4]
That's 2.3 million kroner to you Norc.
