I think sometimes that Doctor Who got of the worst when Sherlock got Cumberbatch, though not by mutch.Norc wrote:
He's absolutely wonderfull in Sherlock, it is after all the role that made his career, but I think he would have made a magnificent Doctor Who as well.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
yeah.. i think he would... although i am glad he is sherlock because he is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT in it, he's perfect for the role
he would make a good doctor i think, but it is hard to imagine him after being used to smith and all the others and all that..

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Weirdly Moffat first saw Smith for the Watson role.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
i know htat would've been terrible did u know Bcumbs was the only one who actually got sent a script first and the only one to be considered for holmes ? and i think (not too sure) it was because of the movie atonement..(which we talked about later)
Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Oh, was he cast on the basis of Atonement?
That is very interesting. I didn't get around to seeing the movie, though I'm quite sure I've seen it before, but I did watch a compilation of his scenes on youtube.
It's here if anyones interested:

Yeah. I remeber it being rather creepy, but also rather good.
And
Was it right he was cast for Sherlock on the basis of that?
And
- Spoiler:
- a bit sad, with the ending and everything.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
I'll take your word for it. I find that interesting though. He certainly steals the show to some degree.
Actually, that's the second thing I realised I've seen Cumberbatch in without knowing it just recently.
Have you seen Fortysomething?
I remeber watching it a couple of years ago because it was meant to be Hugh Lauries return to comedy. Apparently he was paid 1 million pounds by ITV just to put it on. That was before he ended up doing House and becoming world famous and all, of course.
I only just realised Cumberbatch stared in it.
The first episode, I guess, is a good opportunity for fangirls to show some outrage over Cumberbatchs fictional girlfriend passing him over for his fictional brother.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
ooh, yes, forty something! i love that, course i've seen it benedict is great in it!!! also peter capaldi as a creepy fuck
Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Damn. Well, I'll find something by Cumberbatch you haven't seen some day ... Hopefully.
I think I enjoyed Fortysomething when I first saw it, though I never really got into it. I only just realised when I rewatched it recently that Cumberbatch was in it.
The first episode must have brought you some consternation though? With the way they treated him.
And yes, Cipaldi was VERY creepy.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Yeah, that is a bit of a strange but wonderfull coincidence.
I'm glad you like it as I seem to remember it struggled a bit on release.
Though hearing your praise, I might have to give it another go.
Oh, and stumbled over Martin Freemans appearance on Hignfy from about 10 years ago when he was doing the Office.
It's a bit strange to see him before he became more assured in his comedy personna. Like here where he is just flying:
And nowadays when it's completely effortless.

Although a ratings failure on first transmission, leading to it being moved to an off-peak timeslot midway through the run, the appearance of several actors who went on to greater fame has subsequently led the series to sell well on DVD. wrote:

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Yeah, it might be the cut of the episode.
A lot of funny people went on Hignfy back when they only did the 30 minute episodes and ended up having very little of what they said survive the cut if someone else talked a lot.
(And the other guest Gyles Brandreth is famous for talking and talking and talking and talking and ... so on. He appeared on an episode just a couple of weeks ago, where he talked non stop for over 5 minutes. And that was only on the first question. So the other guest tends not to get much of a look in.)
It is a very interesting document though. Because that was actually his very first proper appearance as himself on television.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
well, it might be my fangirlism that made me love it, but it's not bad just perhaps a bit slow paced, but the humour is good and it's House
and skinny-young-super-cute-batch!

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Nah, I think I agree with you. I just watched the second episode now and I think the series quite good.
As to the criticism a lot of it was probably down to the fact that it was billed as Hugh Lauries big return to television comedy. So people probably expected it to be a laugh out loud sort of comedy, which it wasn't.
It's a lot more contemplative and dark which works quite well.
One of my favourite telvision comedy shows at the moment, The Trip, is just like that as well.
And having Cumberbatch and Laurie in it certainly doesn't hurt.

It does. And he's even sporting a certain negativity to bad words.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
You mean you're going to wait 18 days after the rest of us have seen the new episodes? We'll have to make a Sherlock spoiler thread.
Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Why not just watch it on the same link as Who Norc?
