I was a bit surprised to see it on NRK as well this quickly.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Yeah, you could almost say it's a good thing they only make three episodes because at least that means they almost always have the time to do it.
I thought two years was a bit much, but it was understandable with the Hobbit happening and Benedict having about 15 other movies lined up.
So hopefully a shorter wait this time.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
His Last Vow spoiler free review source: http://cumberbatchweb.tumblr.com/
Last night thanks to the lovely people at the BBC I got to watch an early screening of His Last Vow at BAFTA. As you would expect the vast majority of the episode is embargoed which is completely understandable as I would want nothing to ruin your enjoyment but a lot of the really brilliant things I’m not allowed to talk about.
But fear not whilst I adored The Sign of Three this was my favourite of the three - strong story, killer villain and a real emotional rollercoaster. Quintessential Sherlock and my favourite of Moffat’s scripts.
So here’s a few tidbits:
Last night thanks to the lovely people at the BBC I got to watch an early screening of His Last Vow at BAFTA. As you would expect the vast majority of the episode is embargoed which is completely understandable as I would want nothing to ruin your enjoyment but a lot of the really brilliant things I’m not allowed to talk about.
But fear not whilst I adored The Sign of Three this was my favourite of the three - strong story, killer villain and a real emotional rollercoaster. Quintessential Sherlock and my favourite of Moffat’s scripts.
So here’s a few tidbits:
- they are not really spoilers, but i put them here just to be certain :
- The episode is written by Steven Moffat and directed by Nick Hurran who directed the Doctor Who 50th episode
- It’s based on The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton and follows the canon pretty closely so it’s worth you reading the story before Sunday or at theleast having a flick through this wiki entry
- For anyone who’s been a bit dismayed at the favouring of the characters over the cases this episode is tonally much more in keeping with series 2. It’s all case, all business.
- Lars Mikkelsen as Charles Augustus Magnussen is an utterly terrifying villain. Dead eyed, completely still, softly spoken and prone to utterly humiliating his victims he is a truly horrible specimen. There was one point during the screening when I could barely look at the screen while he was being vicious. He’s truly unpleasant.
- CAM has the coolest evil villain lair I’ve ever seen.
- Lindsey Duncan guest stars & is glorious as ever.
- There’s lots and lots of canon references to please the Doyle purists.
- John is finding the domesticity of married life really rather chafing…
- Louise Brealey once again gets the best moment of the episode for me. Molly’s role is smaller in this episode but her moments are lovely and so emotionally true. The sheer degree of character development that we’ve seen this series for Molly who is really a secondary character is staggering. So beautifully played by Louise.
- Anderson and his wife feature in a cameo.
- Theres Something About Mary…
- We find out what Redbeard means.
- Sherlock takes his vow very seriously
- The interaction between Sherlock and Mycroft in this episode is profoundly moving
- We get to see a younger version of Sherlock and he’s played by Louis Moffat
- We find out Sherlock’s full name.
- The episode is an absolute emotional rollercoaster and proves without question again that Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch are the best actors in Britain working today. They are extraordinary in this.
- This isn’t Reichenbach. It will break your heart, it did make me cry, it will leave you feeling utterly exhausted like you’ve been put through the emotional wringer but it’s a different beast alltogether.
- Make sure you watch right until the end. I cannot stress this enough. Because just when you think the episode is over. Well, those last 60 seconds. Oh goodness those last 60 seconds.I wanted to stand up and applaud…
Quick edit to add two more things I just thought about:- Fans of a rare pairing will be delighted. Brief on screen time!
- Throw out your preconceptions about the ending. All the speculation you’ve read? WRONG!
- The episode is written by Steven Moffat and directed by Nick Hurran who directed the Doctor Who 50th episode

So Moff did the most out-of-character bit. The others gave us the brilliant laughs, the cleverness, the cases and real Sherlock. Thank Eru's Moff is beyond criticizing because he made Couples. Saves me a lot of time.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
The previews reviews of the finale sound good. Finger crossed Moff has come up with the goods again.
And I agree Norc that the schedule probably suits jobbing actors in demand- you get to keep a regular paying job and high profile wilst also getting enough time off from it to do other work.
I liked the speech oddily enough- I thought it was one of the better bits-particularly when Sherlock made everyone cry and didnt know why- thats very Moffat.
It was the stag do, whilst fun, that I thought was far more out of character. Drunk Sherlock falling asleep and throwing up on a case- doesnt exactly sit with the character Doyle gave us, not for me anyway.
And the 'cases' bit of the episode was the weakest part.
I am curious Amarie why you thought the speech was more out of character than that.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
omg. i loved the stag do there are lots of reason
1. it showed that they are friends and not all strict work and etc, that they goof about and have fun
2. guessing who they were
3. sherlock's emotional bit with the nurse (sosiopath my ass)
4. falling asleep on the stairs
5. he's cluing for looks.
6. greg being all grumpy because he wasn't invited.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
1. they dont do much of that in the book- they do socialise, mainly going to concerts. But Sherlock tends to be a private sort. Or on a total downer when not on a job and full of cocaine.
2. not sure what you mean
3. good enough line- but doesnt change the premise the whole going on a stag do is hard to imagine the original character ever doing.
4. ok Ill give you that, given he is often to be found lying on a couch
5 Again funny line, but is it in character?
6 no objection there but its the very premise that is a bit questionable for me.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
I never really got the argument that fictional characters need to be logically coherent at all times. Real people certainly aren't.
If it's done well it makes fictional characters more beliveable to me, not the other way around.
And John pouring a shot into his own glass to make Sherlock more drunk. And Sherlock getting his calculations wrong and stills getting sick.
Lot's of great stuff.

1. yes, but that was in like the 1800 and they were both in their 50's. it has to have a modernised twist, and it is stag do and they're young and it is london and cheap boost.. also the GLASSES!! i laughed so hard!Pettytyrant101 wrote:1. they dont do much of that in the book- they do socialise, mainly going to concerts. 2. that guessing game, sherlock was "sherlock holmes" and John was "madonna" and him asking if he was a pretty lady and sherlock in the beginning thinking john asked if he thought he was pretty.
3. whatever.
4. that was sooo coool! and mrs hudson being like "whuss.."
5. YES! cus it was john who said it
6. greg is great.
7. also i read somewhere, someone tweeted that drunk sherlock is very much alike drunk benedict.
8. the "I KNOW ASH!" comment (him referring to 243 different types of tobacco ash)
9. the sucky deductions
Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Great stuff, maybe, in a different show- just not so sure about for Sherlock.
I mean try to imagine Jeremy Bretts version going on a pissed up stag do with Watson- it just doesnt compute.

yes, but that was set in the 1800's and he was... erm.. more grown up
Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Its not the modernisation- they've handled that extremely well up till now- it just doenst sit right with me with the character I know as Sherlock Holmes. It doesnt feel right as something he would do.

Still, the getting drunk part was a very conscious decision. To the degree that he planned out the entier night of drinking in minute detail and turned it into an experiment ... which went wrong.
