Actual content aside, I got the sense that this was drunk Mrs. Figg talking!Mrs Figg wrote:As far as revolutions go, I think Greer belonged to a generation of women still wimmining the barricades, they had to be bolshy to survive I guess. Their mothers generation had only just got the vote for the first time in history. I do think its weird though as a more countries are turning to the burkha some Western women think shoving their ass in the publics face is somehow liberating. Its funny that Miley Cyrus bestie mates with Courtney Love kind of karmic justice really. All this reminds me of that bizarre tv show, Snog, Marry, Avoid. These loud skanky barbie girls are hauled into a makeshift booth and given a make under to make them look more 'ladylike'. Its carcrash tv but fascinating socio-watsit, after they have been scrubbed and de-skanked the girls turn out to be nice little things with absolutely zero self confidence thinking they had to look like hos to get any male attention or approval, they all without exception feel better about themselves not looking tarty or twerking in bars for the lads. what does this say about how young girls are being brought up, why in this day and age do they feel so worthless. It makes me sad. They obviously think Miley Cyrus is a worthwhile model to follow.
"wimmining the barricades," "had to be bolshy," "Its funny that Miley Cyrus bestie mates with Courtney Love kind of karmic justice really."
"It's carcrash tv but fascinating socio-watsit"
No really, sorry to critique so unproductively like that. Thanks for the points Mrs. Figg!
Anyway, back to the music:

Re: Music [2]
I just wanted Eldo to know that after seeing Ludacris being interviewed and finding him to be a pleasant enough sort of guy, I went and listened to some of his music.
I think he's doing the right thing with hip-hop. It's rhythmically stimulating, with variations in vocal expression, not just hitting the end of the line the same way each time (I did hear a little of that in Southern Hospitality, but most of his stuff rises above the 'didda didda HO yada yada MO' type of stuff). Each song has a musical backing that's unique and interesting.
In other words, I wasn't bored and actually approve. The man's acting and creating like a bona-fide artist, which is probably why he's not so full of himself.

Re: Music [2]
For the longest time, this clip from The Simpsons was the extent of my knowledge of Ludacris.
These days I know him mostly through his guest spots on other people's songs (as well as his acting), but he knows his way around a mic and he makes fun music. I'm glad you found a rapper whose work you enjoyed; thanks for letting me know.

Re: Music [2]
Well....I wouldn't say I like his music enough to buy it or even choose to listen to it, but I can respect him as an artist and his stuff doesn't immediately set my teeth on edge or bore me to tears.
But that's progress!
But that's progress!

Re: Music [2]
So Michael Jackson has a new album 'Xscape'
00:00 "Love Never Felt So Good" (Original Version)
03:22 "Chicago" (Original Version)
08:06 "Loving You" (Original Version)
11:08 "A Place with No Name" (Original Version)
16:05 "Slave to the Rhythm" (Original Version)
20:42 "Do You Know Where Your Children Are" (Original Version)
25:23 "Blue Gangsta" (Original Version)
29:45 "Xscape" (Original Version)
35:23 "Love Never Felt So Good" (Remix)
The full album has all of these songs remixed and contemporized.
My thoughts: I quite enjoy the album, I preordered it because I have recently gotten into MJ and thought I'd give this a try, and I'm glad I did. I love just about every track, except for the single version of 'Love Never felt so Good' which is a duet with Justin Timberlake. My favorite tracks on the album are 'Love,' 'Chicago,' and 'Slave to the Rhythm.' I ordered the deluxe edition which has the original versions of every song and I have to say I love both versions of every song as well. I went in not expecting much, considering how his last posthumous album was received. I was pleasantly surprised.
Those are my thoughts, what are your guys'
Also what are your thoughts on posthumously released music of huge stars in general, be it Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Tupac, or anyone else.

Re: Music [2]
When I tried to search for azriel's wonderful "On Horseback" by Mike Oldfield on spotify I found this 17 minute piece that included the song on the end. I didn't like the beginning at first, so I just skipped right to where the song begins, but yesterday I listened to all of it. I still don't like the first five minutes, but from about 5:20 it changes and it only gets better from there. My favourite part begins at the 11:45 mark, so if you don't care to listen to all of it I recommend skipping to that point The whole thing (except the first five mins, but that's just me) is a great piece of music -

i like miley cyrus. not everything she does, but i think she's kinda cool. like she does what she wants to do, why is that a wrong message to send out to young girls? also she shows off sex as being very much about the clit and self pleassure which, let's face it, todays music and pop-culture it lacks a lot, it's all dicks and from a man's perspective. also she has a good voice and creds for that bold style in clothing and not following the main stream (such as demi lovato and selena gomes and what not). she is making herself an image, some people love it, a lot hate it, but then again, who has gotten the most headlines in media and has been talked most about and discussed? not demi lovato. she's young, there is room for failure and success. i feel more sorry for those 45+ men who says she is provoking and sexually out of control, they're the ones judging and getting off of a 20-something girl who could easily be their daughter. wether they care or not for her wellbeing is non of their business, she has a family that probably tells her what's ok and what's not (though as many 20-ish somethings that rarely listen), but for the whole world to be judging her and her family. it's wrong.

I used to have a music program that would do it graphically like that. I'd make faces and dogs and etc to see what it sounded like. Then the operating system changed and it wouldn't work any more.
I haven't found anything to replace it, but it looks like that program may do it. I think they should make programs to let people write music like that, without having to go through sharps and flats and notes etc. Even allow microtones and glissandos. Much more intuitive.

I am judging her not because she is doing what she wants, and not particularly because she uses sex, most actors and singers use sex to some degree these days, thats ok for adults and people over the age of consent. its the way she uses sex thats the problem. Its sleazy and directed at very young kids, what sort of a message does it give to say a 13 year old girl? its not a healthy message, that its acceptable to look like a ho? I think not. she is the very protected rich and privileged child of millionaires, she has no idea of what its like in real life, nobody has ever said 'no' to her and she doesnt live with the repercussions of her actions. Young boys will grow up thinking Young girls are all gagging for sex and its ok and normal for girls to twerk and look like something out a porn magazine. its not ok on any level.

Re: Music [2]
Figgy old bean, I agree with a lot you say. Im still stuck in an age, mentally, where women were,or meant to be, feminine. Men were men but, with respect towards women. Now, in my town anyway, the women are as bad as the guys. They even look similar, tatts, piercings, swearing & spitting. Leggings & tops that are WAY to small or tight on, & they look, well, NOT feminine. Ive seen women provoke fights (with another guy) giving it all the "yeah ? cum'on then ", hand gestures, cocky swagger etc. I hate it.
Im not saying respect towards each other has died out completely, it just seems lacking, where I live anyway. And maybe Ive watched to many period dramas. Maybe Ive got a daft notion in my head that didnt exsit ? or probably not as much as being promoted ? I dunno, sometimes I just look the other way

@ Lorient and your post on the 15th...
I don't think there is anything wrong with publishing the works of dead musicians. It is no different in my mind to publishing a book or releasing a film after someone has copped it. In most cases they meant for their work to be heard/seen/read anyway.

i didn't say i liked everything she does. although, she alone is not responsible for the fact that media and pop-culture and what-not wants girls to look like sex obsest hoes, yes i am looking at you robin thicke!, or on the other side, very girly and feminie. there is no in between.
Re: Music [2]
If Miley didn't have such a young girl fan base I'd say live and let live, but she is giving off a skewed message to a susceptible audience. If she had collected her base among college students I can see her no-shame message as being empowering. The younger girls need this message too, but in a format that doesn't suggest one has to flaunt society in order to be sexy.
I have to respect the Spice Girls in this: they knew who their audience was, and they had a message of breaking boundaries without trying to be shocking.
I think young stars like Miley and Britney got slammed in the face with media sexuality, and the only way they could stand up under the pressure was to slam it right back harder to keep it from consuming them. It may have been the only way they felt they could break free, but that's not a message for everyone.

Re: Music [2]
good point about the Spice Girls, manufactured pop band aimed at young girls, naughty but nice, not sleazy but sexy enough for guys to like them as well. I dont like their music but I liked the ballsy attitude thay had, they never swore, or used porn as a marketing tool. it was probably a LOT healthier image than Miley Cyrus. As you said they were going for the young teen market and were good at it. Surely though if you want to be known as a rebel you dont become part of the sex selling industry you fight against the status quo and reject it. So if today sex sells everything from perfume to cars, and pop stars specially female stars have to be sexy to be successful, surely its more rebellious to be different and iconoclastic like Sinaid Oconnor, Chrissie Hynde or Joan Baez. they didnt need to simulate sex acts to be respected and admired.

The 1981 Goldberg has more heart and thought put into it than the 1955. The 1955 GBV sounds like he's got a plane to catch. Gould did a lot besides piano, he composed, conducted, produced radio programs. He also had unique views on the relationship between performer and audience during live performance, which ultimately led to his retiring from concerts and focusing solely on producing and perfecting in the recording studio. The guy was ahead of his time when it came to where he knew music was heading (the home and not the venue). Quite the interesting fellow.
